I find it a bit odd how a Skyrim fan also dunks on Oblivion IMO. I mean, I can understand a Skyrim fan not liking Morrowind because of it's RNG, slow paced gameplay and overall it being dated, but Oblivion is pretty similar to Skyrim in a lot of regards if you ask me. The only main differences I can think of is the level scaling, magic system, and more variants of weapons. Not saying I hate Skyrim, I don't let the fandom ruin the game for me, because I did genuinely buy the game when it first came out as an Elder Scrolls Fan, and it still has a wonderful world to explore. I just find Morrowind the most with replay value for me, despite it's rather infuriating gameplay.

Am I the only one who likes the way fatigue and the quest journal works? You need to rest a bit after running and jumping around to get to a dangerous location, and you have to deliberately pay attention and become intimate with your quests inorder to look back on them efficiently
@doobledoo

Everyone who talks about the Morrowind fatigue system as being unplayable completely misses the rest mechanic. It's there for a reason and the devs expected you to use it to replenish your fatigue. And the journal rules. Absolutely awesome

@@KBergs you're right. But as much of a huge Morrowind fan that I am, it's sometimes not the most intuitive and protecting that it's limiting systems are designed to be worked around using other in game systems. Most games, even most elder scrolls games, have a tendency to teach the player that if something they're doing isn't working it's because the game is broken, not that they need to use the correct system to overcome it. The fatigue can be like this for a lot of players

He also misread the quest, or deliberately misrepresented it. The tax collector and that guy were constantly having arguments and he owed him. The guy also "boasts" about it because he saw the kill as honorable due to the tax collector holding a debt over his head. Also he did the sheep questline for the fighters guild, which you're not supposed to do.

actually, they aren't immortal. alemexia was able to kill sotha sil, granted that's god on god. but then you kill her. and you can do that before you destroy the heart of lorkahn. they call themselves gods, but they aren't really. they are lesser beings compared to the aedra and daedra. still more powerful than most mortals and won't age as long as the heart is intact. but by the point events morrowind roll around, their power is starting to fade due to dagoth ur having blocked their access to the heart. hence why they can't go take him on. he has unlimited access to the heart and so he can renew his "Godhood" regularly and remain immortal. as long as the heart is intact he'll respawn indefinitely. hence why the neverain must destroy the heart.

I feel like one point you didn't touch on during the graphics segment was morrowinds biome diversity, Ace says oblivion was more diverse but the biomes are really just green, dark green and light green, compare that to the ascadian isles, bittercoast, west gash, ashlands and sheogorad, they all look distinct. As for melee combat being just clicking LMB, you have dodging and fatigue, for an example spear players are often constantly moving during fights since they have more fatigue. Fatigue is also important since you have to take it into account when fighting, if you spam lmb your going to run out of fatigue and die. Running with fatigue is take it or leave it imo, but id say it add to gameplay, for example when your in a dangerous area you could either make to decision to run to get out of there quicker or you could save to for an enemy you might have to fight, compare that to an easier area where you dont need to worry about the enemy's since you've progressed your character to the point where lower tier enemy's aren't a threat. Also you dont need to run everywhere to travel in morrowind as ace implies lol, there's many alternative ways of travel like stilt striders or teleports. Also I find it funny when he says the quests are predictable when showing a Fighters guild member who is secretly a Camonna Tong plant with the goal of destroying the Thieves guild.

In this video Acerthorn was mentioning the different locations in Oblivion and I agree with him the pallet is interesting. The problem I find is alot of it is fashion over function. It's like I'm here, what can I do here? Oh there's a cave I've already explored 46 times fantastic 🤣. Morrowind and Daggerfall tryed to make graphics for the game, not for the numbers. What does that mean? Daggerfall was limited in what it could do technically, so it just did was was needed to transport atmosphere and gameplay. Morrowind followed the same principle. thats why you wont see buzzling cities but the two exceptions. Most houses in Morrowind are brown and grey, because cley and stones are an abundance in Morrowind, so the people use what they can get. Oblivion tryed so hard for distance render and particle effects, it completely missed the point, that woods that are supposed to be far away still could be counted for each individual tree top... And Skyrim just went with the average edgelord badass bs around the time of 2010. Todd actually explained that himself in detail. he wanted a cool guy, swinging axes in a cool manner. Skyrim would carry the same blinding colours as Oblivion if it wasnt for the extreme big advances graphics made between 2006 and 2010.

Unless the hardware limitations of the early 2000s really did limit their available color palette that much, hasn't Elder Scrolls Online already proven that Morrowind's environment really doesn't have to consist of almost exclusively brown? Warcraft 3 came out the same year.
@Cyberwar101
@Cyberwar101 7 ай бұрын
It isn't exclusively brown at all. The starting areas are brown, and the architecture are going to be browns and grays. However there are plenty of areas with more color. Telvanni towers have blues and purples. The grazelands have golden fields. The daedric ruins are ominous black and reds, with sharp angles. Sixth house bases are lit with eery red candles. In places close to red mountain a deep red wind will sweep across the area. Redoran locations are brown on the outside but often colorful and well decorated on the inside, reflecting their character as a people.

"exclusively brown?" if people would just be honest about this regurgitated point once... just once... There are more colours in the average Morrowind than in Oblivion (except for SI) and Skyrim... but I guess the player which make this argument again and again are the same people that try to kill a mudcrab with a dagger while shortblade is 5... eg braindead graphic kiddys. Nope, wont debate with you about that, you already proven you just belch out wrong statements, because you couldnt care more than 2 seconds.

@@Cyberwar101 "The starting areas are brown" Not even that. You are starting in the belly of a ship - made out of wood. the second you exit the ship you have already more colours in the tutorial of Morrowind than Oblvion, which graces your eye for 15 minutes with what... whiteish grey sewers and grey tunnels full of green-grey goblins - to be fair, there are some shades of silver and red for a couple of seconds... Even In Skyrim you start out with less colours on the carriage ride down to Helgen, which is grey, bluish grey, brown and some rare green-shades. In helgen the palette is the same as in Morrowind. Some colourful details, the rest is grey, brown and depending on the skybox some blue or orange. The point about colour in Morrowind being the same all over the place proves the one making the point a ignorant dumbas, maybe even a fanboy, but nothing else.

I despise the argument he made for landscape variety. The environment of Morrowind DOES change, even if it doesn't change colour. Morrowind's landscape is thematically appropriate and a great example of worldbuilding. Telvanni controlled land is often isolated, in environments that are difficult to travel if you aren't magically capable (Cliffs and Penninsulas) and is decorated by their signature giant enchanted mushroom towers. Which, by the way, are some very colourful environments if the colour palette was *really* his only gripe. Redoran territory is more ashen, the structures are made from large carapaces in the traditional Dunmer/Chimer/Velothi style, the ancestral heritage of the Dunmer is plastered all over Redoran controlled settlements because they are TRADITIONALISTS. Hlaalu territory is modern and made from Imperial stone with more Cyrodiilic style houses than the rest of Vvardenfell and you damn near cannot go more than 2 residences without finding one that's not a front for a secret organised crime lair. Vvardenfell and it's architecture are so well done from a story-telling standpoint and I love that it's more Middle Eastern inspired than the generic fantasy flavours of Oblivion and partially Skyrim (although that's entirely subjective). If you showed me a city in Skyrim I would not be able to tell you anything about who runs the place or even whether this was a Imperial or Stormcloak sympathetic location (except for Windhelm and Solitude obviously). Show me a snapshot of any of Morrowind's settlements and you can tell which region of the map it's in, which Great House controls that territory and whether the people there are new age worshippers of the Tribunal or traditional worshippers of the Velothi/Good Daedra. At no point am I going to see a Telvanni tower in the South-Western Hlaalu territories, or a Redoran carapace stronghold in the Telvanni Penninsulas of Azura's Coast. IS THAT NOT LANDSCAPE VARIETY??? And think of a location like Tel Vos for example, an abondoned Imperial Fortress being strangled by the roots of the Tel Vos tower itself. Think of the metropolis that is Vivec and it's cantons and it's underworks, or the small fishing villages on the West Coast. Or the Imperial chapels and castles that make up Ebonheart. If you can look me in the face and tell me these are all the same environment you are a liar. I know I typed a million billion words but I've never heard something I disagreed with more in my entire life. I dislike it when people defend a hot take by citing that opponents feel nostalgia, and are therefor biased. It's intellectually dishonest because it gives you an easy out against every counterpoint. It also ignores the fact that people having their nostalgia dashed is such a frequent occurrence that nearly everyone has experience with it. And Morrowind isn't a dead game. Not only are people still playing it, people are still actively modding it. So all these people have nostalgia goggles for a game they still actively play? No, I don't think so. The only thing he's right about is that Oblivion's quests are better. But Oblivion's quests are among the best in the genre. Morrowind's "feel" is fundamentally different, being far more exploration focused, its game world consciously divided between heavily populated and sparsely populated areas.
@theprometheusprimeshow
@theprometheusprimeshow Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the nostalgia argument comes up alot in these types of videos. It predisposes this idea that, because it's something that made us feel good in the past; we can't ever look back and see the flaws. I've been playing Oblivion for a long time, I know all its flaws; in Oblivion there are certain aspects that I'm gonna acknowledge as broken and flawed. When you care about these games, you naturally observe these things. The reason I didn't respond to his point on Oblivions' quests is because I agreed with Acerthorn on that. Now, if I was a dishonest prick, I could flip his argument against him and say, "if you enjoy these quests, then you're nostalgia blinded Acerthorn." Because he played Oblivion first just like I did, but I know Oblivions quests are objectively better. There's more organization, there's more range in what you can do in alot of these quests, sometimes what you have to do in these locations is a bit different from what the objective actually is. now is that a point against Morrowind? Of course not; it's a point in favor of Oblivion. The problem with alot of Acerthorn's videos is that he is criticizing these games things under the assumption that if the game of tomorrow in the same series did somethings better than the previous game; then that previous game is bad, and that's foolish.

Also if i had to critique your video, on your sections about how he was complaining the world was brown it'd have been a strong argument to talk about how more colors does not equal more interesting landscapes, i mean fallout 4 has a lot of colour to it, but i've found the landscapes in it to be generally boring because they are not interesting on their own, also how he praises oblivion, despite oblivion being a good 90% green land, so he saying morrowind is worse because brown, but oblivion is better basically amounts to him saying he prefers an overly green game over an overly brown one. also i think you played some clips of him thay where unecessary, generally you'll want to skip those since they don't contribute much to the substance of a response. also i'd like to make a point about how artstyle >graphical fidelity, sure morrowind has less polygons than what came after, but it does have a far more interesting style to it, with stuff like the giant mushrooms and the darker areas with ash storms, opposed to oblivion and skyrim which are generic fantasy.

The same agruement could have been say with Skyrim. Skyrim wasn’t so much good looking with the game of those time either, and don’t even mention Oblivion. People don’t play The Elder Scroll game for its graphic or combat, otherwise they would have quit since DaggerFall (in other case, Fallout 1 or modern day, Kenshi from another studio). @@nickelakon5369 Morrowind had shading and lighting effects with actual volume. Right out of my mind I cannot think of anything that came out the same time with similar graphics tech. The first Far Cry is the only exception here. Are we talking about Morrowind "looking" bad, because its colour palette has not the variety other games of that time, or are we talking about actual graphics? there is a difference most people just miss completely while talking about "Morrowind has bad graphics". The Gamebryo engine enabled rather big texture details for 2002, it enabled rather fluent animations and some impressive lighting. Literally most arguments about bad Morrowind graphics just carry a very subjective perspective. because the second you start to count in the actual capability of what the gamebryo could and really just did back then, you will find, that most People have a very very warped view. That cannot be debated on a subjective level.
@nickelakon5369

@Randleray no Morrowind looks bad because its models, textures, and animation are all generation behind other games. Perhaps the lighting tech you are referring to is to blame for that. But look at all the other games I referred to, and you can see what I'm talking about. Morrowind character models are far more low poly than other games from the time, the textures are also way less clear, and the animations are just outright bad. There is no taste involved here. It's just a fact that these were not graphically up to the standard of games of the Era. Morrowind was behind the standards of its time of release. The environment looks great to me though, especially the water.

The other examples of yours are not so far off. really, go back and google for images which are not some overhaul or remastere. Morrowind is the only game that has given me a feeling of membership to a group or guild in-game. Raw progress through each guild rank always made sense and other group members actually treated you as they should considering your and their rank. It has also given me a connection to characters in-game. A feeling which any other game couldn't have created in me. Main quest, though it feels like it's stretched, overall is great. Going through it has always led you to a lot of variety, a thing that Skyrim for example has never done. In Skyrim main quest you just had to talk to npc, go somewhere and bring something. There's no such variety in Skyrim as there is in Morrowind. In Skyrim, main quest especially, you usually talk to a Nord npc; not even talking about how it is hard to know what race a character in Skyrim is until you have checked the wiki. It's not my point here to say Skyrim is bad, because I think it's still great and it was my first tes game, but I think Morrowind has captured the elder scrolls' world much better. Talking about variety, the point acer made about terrain is not true. I remember as it was today when I went to Azura's Coast, those green landscapes! It literally felt like it was a different world, the culture is different. For now it is all I had to say, maybe I'll update this comment later.

The flaws from nowadays point of view, yes. Back then, when I played it freshly out of the box in 2002, in a 14' inch CRT monitor, it was breathtaking with it's first and third pov, when most games from that era were isometric. The only thing that looked better was Lineage 2, one year later, in 2003. Was it buggy? Yeah, like every game from that era. You already knew that you gotta fix it yourself, that is why they packed it with the CS. You didn't have online support 24 hs like nowadays, and you bought expansion packs, not dc. The game was one of its kind.

@@SJDSt "Like every game from that era" Yeah, that's bullshit. Morrowind was extremely buggy even in comparison to contemporary titles. Also, I'm not talking about graphics. Although the the game has OBVIOUSLY aged rather poorly in the visual department, it is still completely playable. The thing about Morrowind is that it also has serious game design issues all the way from the ridiculously stupid leveling scheme to how skill effects are calculated. Morrowind has plenty of amazing things going for it, but in many ways it was garbage even when it came out; plenty of it being obvious to anyone who has even a passing grasp of high-school level math.
@ChaosZero.
@ChaosZero. 2 жыл бұрын
I was old enough to play and appreciate all of the TES games up to and including Morrowind and they were great back in the day. But the main issue has always been the combat system. D24 mechanics never have been and never will be appropriate for a real time combat system and anybody defending it is just delusional or looking for confirmation bias. In J/CRPGs and otherwise turn based combat games it's still annoying, but it makes sense because it's much more akin to a pen & paper tabletop RPG like D&D or Warhammer 40k. A game session can take a long time, but inbetween dice rolls you have a laugh and a chat with your friends, you manually move your miniatures around the map and the time goes by that way. In games such as Morrowind however, it really does not. You and your opponent can stand 2ft apart from each other swinging your swords all day long and still miss every single swing for no logical reason other than some arbitrary numbers saying you're not good enough. But even a bad swordman can and should land a hit if they swing their weapon in the general direction of their opponent. It won't be fatal, it won't be "accurate", but it'll land. Granted, at higher levels and with high enough agility/strength (other than proficiency in your weapon of choice) and a full bar of fatigue you tend to land hits more consistently, but it's still a dumb and outdated system that was already going out of fashion 20 years ago when Morrowind first released in 2002. Morrowind wouldn't be a better game with a super realistic combat system either (like the area-based one in Kingdom Come Deliverance for example where you do damage based on where you hit your opponent), but there is a reason why almost every RPG since Morrowind (and KOTOR1&2 which also used the D24 system) moved onto a better system based on always landing hits and using stat checks just to determine how much damage the player effectively dealt.

The issue is people making a reaction video to another video, on any given topic There's a React-Ception pandemic going, where it's a reaction video to a reaction video, of a a guy reacting to a reaction video, of several other people reacting to reactions, and the content is (name a topic) What he was saying was how Morrowind is placed in the pillar, and all others are pale imitations He was saying how dull it was because it was all sepia tones The color pallet wasn't exciting, and the fact that it takes place near an active volcanic region tells me they really didn't put fourth a lot of effort Technical limitations be damned, they stuck with one color and they picked the most boring one Sepia Tones And as limiting it was, that unless you were a very specific character type, there where certain things you would be unable to do and you pretty much were shooting yourself in the foot if you didn't choose that particular character build

I will say that I wasn't trying to tell him his opinion on the game is wrong, he can like or dislike anything he wants. The problem is throughout his video he actively misrepresents the game and gets things blatantly wrong throughout. Then tries to make a point that most people who enjoy the game are just nostalgia blinded which is pretty insulting. I would have actually preferred if Acerthorn responded in the way you suggested; especially before all the dmca abuse. I'm not so much reacting as I'm more responding to his points that aren't really made in earnest because he bashes morrowind for having only a brown landscape; even though that's not true, but praises oblivion while having graphical mods on to take screenshots. The problem is that in his video he sets himself up as someone who is gonna martyr himself just because he doesn't like a game, but in reality nobody really cares and that's actually kind of insulting as well. The reason I made my video is because most of the points he made were misrepresenting, or blatantly untrue. I think reviewers should try to be fair and honest about their criticisms of media or at the very least understand the media you're reviewing, and he didn't so I responded; I even agreed with some of his points throughout the video because it's not all bad just alot of it is. His video was more of a slideshow than a fair analysis honestly. @@theprometheusprimeshow I still believe that the, however poorly worded, "Oblivion shakes things up" is a valid point which isn't really adressed in your video. A common argument is that the journal and lack of map markers makes Morrowind the "bestest game ever". What bothers me with the quests is that the NPCs has clairvoyant knowledge of every quest. They know exactly where you are supposed to go and exactly where some item is. Go and get it and we're buddies. In Morrowind 99% of the quests are: a) find item X over at position Y b) you find the item at that exact location c) you recall back for your reward Of course you also get a yellow sqare (here, let me mark it on your map) close to the item location and then just go N, S, E, W from that yellow square. The empty landscape makes the cave or whatever you want to find, easy to locate. It's simple. In Oblivion you often meet some NPC during the quest who will give you new knowledge that the quest giver just didn't know about. Oblivion has branching questlines, something that Morrowind just doesn't have, with the exception of the very final quest where you get a list of several things to do in the same quest. Overall quest design is a huge minus for Morrowind IMHO.
@theprometheusprimeshow
@theprometheusprimeshow Жыл бұрын
@Tomas Nilsson The reason I didn't address the Oblivion point is because I agreed with him, I even added my own criticisms of morrowinds quests in terms of organization and journal logging. What you are saying about morrowind Quests are true with the exception of a few outliers and the main quest. I agree with acerthorn that the quest death of a taxman was pretty short but this is a quest you get at the beginning of the game. He was also presenting the quest in a dishonest way by reducing it to the most bare bones description to make it sound as boring and lazy as possible. If he feels it's boring that's fine, but the framing is the issue; and he claims that this review is giving a fair shot to the game when in the review alot of the criticisms are anything but that.

Uhhm... someone clearly never playied more than 3 hours into Morrowind. there are plenty - PLENTY - of example quests, where you are given flatout wrong directions or directions that, if followed, will get you lost if you dont plan your own route accordingly. In some cases quest givers directly say they dont know what you will face at your destination. The very first two quest you will encounter in Morrowind already dont tell you ANY exact directions... MAN!! Compare that to Oblivion, where you literally just have to follow the magical marker. I am absolutely flabberghasted how some people can prove their own points wrong and then still insist in having their own opinion... Morrowind has flaws, Not a single fan will denie that. But the form of which Skyrim and Oblivion fanboys try to prove Morrowind wrong/bad is just hilarious and insane at the same time.

So no... play the game again and you'll see how easy it is to find your way in Morrowind. Finding a door in an otherwise empty landscape is very, very easy. You say there are "PLENTY" (your capitalisation) quests that differ, but don't offer any substance to your arguments. Keep trying, I'm sure you'll form av cohesive non ranting sentence one day.

They're more than just elitists lol, they're like fanatic cultists, and I'm not sure they're a minority. Just last week I was viciously attacked and insulted in a TES FB group for criticizing Morrowind eventhough I actually love the game (playing Tamriel Rebuilt these days, which has been my favourite TES experience so far) and talked about a lot of its highlights as well. For reference, this was the comment: "It's was the best of times, and it was the worst of times. Devs literally didn't care about making the quests interesting. The game was buggy and clunky, the dungeons were boring and bland, the items were designed weird, the game itself had a million different exploits, and some skills were completely useless. The game was limited a lot, so it would work on consoles. On the other hand; the spell making was great, the atmosphere was amazing, the world building was top notch, and immersion was great. I still play it. Though I must admit; when it comes to mechanics, bug fixing, and designing quests and dungeons, mod makers are legit better than the devs." Also, to be fair, there are games older than Morrowind that had more variety in their color palette like Might and Magic 6.

I mean... entering fb is already like stepping on a mine... Edit: "Devs literally didn't care" Sorry, just noticed that in your post... I am sorry, but if you started to debate Morrowind like that, you would be getting attacked not just by elitists, but by any TES fan - and rightfully so. Not liking some tes games i one thing. To say Bethesda didnt care up until a certain entry is simply wrong. It is literally the same rout of "argument" Acerthorn goes down and gets whooped for. Morrowind was the last entry that actually cared intertwining questlines. Oblvion already put away with that mostly. In Skyrim factions are isolated bubbles. and there are dozens of videos on yt that explain exactly that, so I wont just put up describing examples. Every TES was buggy and clunky at day one. thats not an argument for or against Morrowind. If Morrowinds dungeons are broing and bland, you clearly didnt vistit more than the 5 required dungeons in the game. there are some interesting dungeons in Skyrim, but Oblivion literally has ONE shade of grey it uses for EVERY dungeon... Despite Morrowind not being better in that case, it at least has a big variety. but you will only encounter that, if you actually go out and play the game... The items at lest had some design. Oblvion had some unique designs, but just look at the variety Skyrim has... sure, they have greater detail, but that doesnt help the fact, that every archtype of a weapon literally looks the same but the material... I take 'weird design' over that boring crap any day. The 'limited a lot for consoles' is also an interesting point, when Morrowind had overall just more options than Oblivion and Skyrim combined in every aspect of the games. Before making such a statement, you might want to explain 'limited'. Now you can just slap my points away with what you just stated already 'I am a elitist fanboy': Fair enough, doesnt change anything about my points proving your statements simply wrong.
@baryony

God I've literally written you a book, but youtube refreshed itself before I could even send it :/ To sum it up to a great degree, I have no reason to call you an elitist fanboy. In fact I've already implied in my comment that I reserve such definitions for people who are being toxic only because I've had a different opinion. No, I don't deserve to be insulted because I don't share some of their opinions. People should be able to debate calmly, rationally, and in a mature manner. I don't dislike Morrowind. It's one of my all time favorite titles. Just because I see a lot of flaws in it doesn't change the fact that I also see a lot of greatness in it. I've said Bethesda didn't care only concerning the quests, context is important. And I still stand by that statement. Most factions have their last quest which involves killing the faction leader in the arena, which is ridiculous. What kind of legion can function like that? Almost all Morag Tong quests are about killing people without any creativity, and even any need for any attempt at stealth (unlike Oblivion's dark brotherhood which rewards creativity and stealth). Most faction quests actually resemble radiant quests from Skyrim or randomly generated quests of Daggerfall. There is very little story or creativity involved in them. Don't get me wrong I love and prefer Morrowind's faction mechanics (like connected quests, having to choose between two factions, and skill requirements for promotions) to Oblivion's or Skyrim's, but that doesn't necessarily make the quests fun (such quests often involve killing the opposing faction's leaders, along with some other stuff that I've found boring in general). Other TES games were never as buggy or clunky as Morrowind, and they've mostly received fixes by devs, which didn't happen to a great degree to Morrowind. You can have permanent summons in Morrowind by using spellmaking to cast a summoning spell and soultrap together, all the powers of Superman including permanent flight, strenght high enough to one shot the living gods with one hit with the worst weapon in the game (which also disintegrates the weapon), super speed, super intelligence (that can last for ages because potion effects stack), the base run speed is so low I think it was the real reason they've put the boots of blinding speed to the game so close to the starting area, merchants have grossly low amount of septims despite having a lot of super expensive stuff in their inventory (it's so low some merchants who have around 200,000 septim worth of items have around 1,000 septims to spend, so selling certain unenchanted, single items actually require the player to pay the merchant first even if the merchant has many of those items in their inventory to begin with), unarmored skill actually gives you zero armor if you aren't wearing at least one piece of armor...etc. Oblivion dungeons are terrible and one of the most criticized aspects of the game along with level scaling. Oblivion having flaws doesn't prevent Morrowind from having it's own flaws though. Morrowind item variety and appearance is amazing to say the least. I'm still waiting for Bethesda to bring back spears and and thrown weapons. However I was referring to the enchantments and stats on items when I was talking about items having been designed weird, Good point about the limitation issue. The most obvious one I can think right now (I've written the original comment ages ago) is the number of NPCs allowed in a cell. It's quite low in every TES game since Morrowind due to console limitations. The most extreme example is from Skyrim though. Town of Whiterun literally has six people to pay taxes which would be needed to pay the guards' wages. All other people are either the Jarl's court, or live outside of the town at the college. Only buildings in the town are the Jarl's longhouse, a shop, an inn, and one friggin' house. It's quite ridiculous really.

the combat and stamina systems are perfectly fine. everytime someone like you complains about it without fail, I always find completely refused to engage with its rules, and that results in them "not liking it cause I can't walk up and tap the creatures to death." it comes acrossed as incredibly childish to say its a bad system. I'm also like you by the way, Oblivion was my first Elder Scrolls, I rented it from blockbuster frequently. I only played Morrowind pretty recently and I haven't even finished it mostly cause I tend not to play through Elderscrolls games all at once and take numerous breaks into play where I play other games. so this isn't a nostalgia blindness or anything. when you engage with the rules the combat system actually feels pretty good, you can't play the pre-oblivion Elder scrolls games the same way as the new ones where your character is always a formless jack of all trades. if you aren't trained in a weapontype DONT USE IT, even if it's better than what you have, your inability to use the weapon will negate any advantages the gear would otherwise give you. When you have no training and try to hit people with things you're gonna fuck up, you're gonna whif hits or mess up edge alignment, and when you get winded, from running around or being in a long fight, it's only gonna get worse, and the game simulates that through the hit chance system. I understand that a lot of people see the models collide and go "I hit why didn't that do damage" but you can't engage with the system that way, not being able to animate the opponent blocking, or a near miss, or their armor deflecting your blow is just another limitation of the engine you shouldn't judge the game for.

I actually enjoy that aspect of morrowind now and it allows me more roleplaying opportunities; stopping in taverns to rest after a dungeon, you know. Spending time brewing potions also helped me with that. The Combat is pretty tight and even though I played Morrowind last I recently find myself replaying it again and again. 3:16 Nice video, but I think you didn't understand what he meant by being a CRPG without skills and partners. CRPGs are basically role-playing games strongly based on D&D, which implies that the game and combat system is based on having a party with different characters with exclusive and complementary abilities. That is not possible in Morrowind because the game is a single player ARPG. The player avatar has to do everything in the game: fight, heal, open chests, etc. The problem is that in Morrowind (and in a certain way Oblivion) a random die system was put without having the other systems of a CRPG. I’m late on this video but I think his criticism of the coloration was somewhat fair. There were better looking and more color-rich games on the Xbox - Fable for example. It’s not necessarily a limitation for the hardware as much as it was a deliberate design choice. This isn’t exclusive to Morrowind either. Most original Xbox games were designed with “gritty” and desaturated visuals.

just finished the main story and am at the 'trials of the skaal' quests before i gave up upon the game i kinda get the appeal of the game but tbh, most people should put down their rose tinted glasses for once. while the game requires a bit more thought and an overall methodical approach, it is extremely annoying in so many aspects. movement speed is a joke, balance doesn't exist, dialogue (less cringe than later titles but still bad), soundtrack is basically repeating the same 3 short tracks... Exploring in this game feels more rewarding i give it that and for its time it was probably very interesting to see a huge and alien world but that magic wears off quickly with literally everything else the game offers... also f** the damn cliffracers every few meters
@jdamsel8212
@jdamsel8212 3 ай бұрын
movement speed increases, balance is player controlled in an rpg as open ended as morrowind. other two are subjective but I like both, evidently many other people did since skyrim rips morrowinds theme. Also cliffracers become a non-issue as you level.
@thefranken-thing
@thefranken-thing 5 күн бұрын
Every time someone complains about movement speed, I tell them the same thing: you are too encumbered. There is no need to be encumbered more than 25-50% of your maximum carrying capacity unless you are looting a dungeon or taking items to the shop to sell. If you follow this advice and your speed is above 50, you will move about as fast as Oblivion and Skyrim. Drinking potions of restore fatigue will also help. If you really want to go fast Ricky Bobby style, you can drink skooma, or fortify speed potions. You can also use spells to fortify speed and strength to move faster. There is even an easily obtainable pair of boots that fortifies speed by 200 points at the price of blindness which can be resisted or cured with magic. There is a learning curve to this game. It took me a few years of playing to figure this stuff out because I was a kid. As an adult, I just carefully read everything the NPCs tell me and the game mechanics are explained very well.

Hello. Acerthorn here. 2:24 - 2:29 *"You had to have known the title alone would have gotten you some backlash."* Of course. Then again, if I had named the video "Why Morrowind is the best game ever made," that would have also gotten me some backlash. The question is not whether I would have gotten backlash, but rather, what group of people I was going to get backlash from, and more importantly, whether I even give a shit if those people like me or not. The people who are going to give me backlash over the video's title are ... the people who have such an overly-fanatical devotion to this game that anything short of calling it literally perfect will be seen by them as a personal attack on them. And I don't really give a fuck what those people think. 2:29 - 2:37 Liar. I'm going to get shat on by at least one group of people no matter what. 2:51 Oh my god! This bullshit again?! Let me guess: The reason you want people to remember this fact for "later on" is because you're going to argue that, unless I finished the game (either any% or 100%), then I don't have the right to call it a retrospective. Is that it? I've done this song and dance so ... sooooo many times before! Hey Prometheus, if you're going to obsess over my use of words, and use my supposed misuse of words as a primary factor in your rebuttal arguments, then maybe you should, as preperation for this video, LOOK THE WORDS UP IN THE DICTIOANRY before you start criticizing my use of the words! The word "retrospective," as a noun, is defined in one of two ways: (1) "an art exhibit showing an entire phase or representative examples of an artist's lifework," and (2) "any exhibition or series of showings or performances, as of musical works or motion pictures, representing the work of an artist or performer over all or a major part of a career" Source: www.dictionary.com/browse/retrospective As you can see, the definition doesn't say anything about completion or thoroughness requirements. A retrospective _can_ include an "entire phase," or it could merely include "representative examples." The latter type purports on its face to allow for incomplete compilations. So no, I am not committing false advertising by calling my video a retrospective. You are merely attempting to insert your own, arbitrary definition of the term and then hold me to that term in order to say that my title is misleading. So you know what? I was willing to give your video a chance. I was going to engage with you. But now I see that all you're planning on doing is just repeating the same, tired-old bullshit arguments I've already dealt with countless times before. So if you want me to engage with the rest of this video, I want you to do one of two things. I'll give you the choice of which one you do. You can either ... (A) Assure me that the entirety of your 52 minute video (and I mean literally all of it) is comprised exclusively of new and original arguments and rebuttals, and that you do not, even once, repeat a criticism I have already addressed. (B) Give me timestamps telling me the beginning and end of your original arguments, so I can watch only those portions of the arguments and skip over the portions where you repeat criticisms I've made in the past. Remember that I want both the beginning timestamp and the ending timestamp. With the ending timestamp, I'll know that your original criticisms are over and that you're about to make a repeat criticism, so I'll know to skip that and move on to the next beginning timestamp. You posted the link to this video in the comment section of one of my videos (I think it was my Dark Souls Retrospective, but I can't remember exactly), so clearly, you wanted me to see this video. Unless you want all your hard work to go to waste, then you'd best do one of the above two options.

Well I really didn't expect you to respond to me but cool. Allow me to introduce myself I'm prometheus prime and I disagreed with your video enough to make a response. I know that was your first review but everything is subject to criticism. No matter how old. You got me with the textbook definition of "Retrospective;" just like how Feminists love to cite the textbook definition of "Feminism" when you criticize them. 🤣 I'm just Joshing. Look The thing is I can't tell if the arguments I made in my video have already been addressed in your comments. I made my video the second I saw yours on Morrowind. I haven't read every response you made to people. You have a ton of comments that would be insane. I did respond to a few that disagreed with you and gave them my video as a way to vent. I can't promise you that my video touched new ground. I can only say that I tried to make it entertaining and informative. You don't have to watch it if you don't want to. It would be alright if you did; I could use the extra hour of watch time. 🤣 And maybe I missed something and made bad criticisms myself. I'm not going to put timestamps up you'll just have to watch it if you are curious about it. I'm also open to criticism; it could help me get better at this youtube response thing. It's your call dude all my hardworking won't go to waste because I got the experience from doing that and learned alot; i also had lots of fun.
