Great breakdown! It’s a shame he doesn’t lean into the negative aspect as much as he could. A lot of people will praise Dark Souls, but I have seen few critique it. I don’t see how any of the points he makes can even be remotely placed next to Dark souls. It’s not a perfect game, but what it does well is executed brilliantly. The gameplay is one of the strongest points in favor of dark souls, it’s almost like the game was built and designed with the systems in mind. His fanatical praise of Nintendo seems to blind him. The examples you list in the video help illustrate just how bad Nintendo really is. In a way, he is quite similar to Gwyn, who wants the age of fire to going on and refuses the accept the darkness. The comparisons to other Nintendo games also seems to stem from his fanatic worship of Nintendo. It’s not like the games are bad even in themselves, they just don’t compare to Dark souls very well. What he might have tried doing instead is comparing dark souls to another game with slower paced gameplay, since that’s something he singled out in his video. Anyways, good video regardless, you rendered his points mute in a understandable way, without being disrespectful or ingenious. Kudos.

I can agree on Dark Souls mechanics being not really explained. It becomes a problem if they are absolutely crucial for progression. Yet I can notice that I roll slower when I put another piece of equipment or I can still attack. And can swing the starting weapon. I passed through half the game not knowing what poise is. Was somewhat painful but doable. Therefore its a problem until I check the wiki. Still a problem but overbloated and overdramatized. Also do I need to count frames for longsword or spear weapon class attacks or something to prove if they are faster or something? They are quite fast. The light encumbrance rolls are fast. I doubt Zelda games have it much faster or something. The guy is a hypocrite, and the most extreme fanatic I've ever seen. Also the total assblast on the franchises. Lost it there, cant argue with that lmao.

Ehh I disagree that DS1 needs a remake. DS1 has a unique charm in its current state. As we saw with the demon soul’s remake, while a remake would be cool in some aspects, it would also take away from the original vibe of the game in many other areas. Also, unlike demon souls, ds1 is available on practically every platform (even the Switch), so a remake wouldn’t really provide new access to an old game like the Demon Souls Remake did. Plus, imho, DS1 has aged quite well actually, minus the facial animations, and the remaster runs on 60 FPS even on older consoles (which DS3 and Sekiro fail to do). I strongly recommend just playing DS1/remastered; although the game is gonna feel much slower compared to Elden Ring, that wouldn’t change with a remake anyways.

Whats so vague about status conditions or poise in dark souls? Poison and toxic deal damage over time very self explanatory bleed causes you to take a chunk of damage and curse is instant death and cuts your hp in half. Those are the only effects in dark souls 1. And poise describes itself as "ability to recieve attacks without breaking form" seems clear enough to me what that does. Higher poise=more resistance to staggering from being hit. The most obtuse thing about poise is how poise regeneration works. Dark souls being irrelevant is just dumb. Its one of the cultural phenomenons of the early 21st century much like minecraft has been and doom still is as well. Fromsofts titles are all in their own ways a masterpiece that build upon and learn from mistakes made from previous titles. Even the black sheep Dark souls 2 scholar of the first sin has its good ideas that would later be reused like dual wielding and the estus upgrade system and that game suffered mostly from a development hell cycle as most of the best manpower at the time was focused on bloodborne. Each game also has its own unique mechanics that are indicative of that game. Dark souls has its vagrants and gravelording for example. Dark souls 2 had bonfire ascethics letting you ng+ specific sections of worlds. Dark souls 3 had embering. Bloodborne has its bloodgems, sekiro is borderline a different genre of action rpg, and elden ring finally gave us a proper jump, horseback riding, and spirit summons and now with its dlc out we get to see sekiros player upgrade system get a revisit.

I don't think this video even merited any response. He's clearly using only subjective opinion based on his preference for certain types of games that Dark Souls isn't. He's not even providing the most basic of gameplay footage to showcase any of his complaints in action and not going into any specific details with his arguments. This is a giant nothing burger of opinionated criticism constructed from his biases. He even clumps the appeal of Dark Souls as a franchise in only with people that want the challenge of a hard game, disregarding anyone that might find the mechanics or story and character fascinating or just wanting a different kind of RPG experience that no other game is providing. Not everyone plays Dark Souls to be "hardcore", but he seems to think that's the only reason.

"If you're not a Nintendo gamer, you have nothing else to play", Yeah that explains why many 3rd party developers like Capcom, Square, Konami, Namco and FromSoft supporting the Playstation for a long time, and eventually PC, when Nintendo started to lose 3rd party support in the mid 90s, they lost a good portion of players. This guy is a literal Nintendrone, he can't see Dark Souls without comparing it to a Nintendo game. This guy needs to actually play something that isn't Nintendo related because he is missing over 30 years of great games instead of having this blind loyalty to Nintendo like they can do no wrong, when they have made many mistakes that go all the way back.

I don't like Dark Souls or any Souls Borne games simply due to my preferences in what styles of gameplay I find fun, and generally prefer easier experiences that have wider margins for error, and can be played well enough without needing to fully master it. That all being said, this guy who you're critiquing doesn't seem to have the mindset to understand that a game that isn't for him can still be a good game. People like him think that just because they don't like something, it means that thing is objectively bad, which couldn't be further from the truth. I genuinely enjoyed your breakdown of his... Nintendo games are some of the nearest and dearest to my heart, and the Zelda franchise especially so. Link was my role model growing up, simply because he embodied courage. As a timid child, seeing Link rise up to challenges made me have a little more confidence in myself. So they've always been very important to me. That and I like their gameplay loop lol. But holy *crap,* man. This is some bonkers level fanaticism. Nintendo is very much a case of "Love the games, not the company" for me. And even the games are beginning to lose their shine in some regards (Most notably Pokemon and Mario, though the new Legends game is a very refreshing direction for the Pokemon franchise). Comparing Dark Souls to Zelda is not a new thing. Many people have before, and I think it's natural to given that it's - on a surface level - similar in terms of how you lock on, move around, etc. But it ends there. This guy's rants weren't discussing anything truly bad about Dark Souls, nor anything good about Zelda. It sounded like someone feeling threatened that other people like something different than him and he can't accept that. Dark Souls is irrelevant? I suppose that's why we're still getting fresh memes of "You Died" made constantly, and it's still universally talked about among many different gaming crowds. Zelda doesn't have that same level of discussion. Breath of the Wild may, possibly, but that's a single game in the franchise. Soulsborne as a collection of games is discussed much more often from what I've seen. It's okay to like what you like, my guy. There's no need to feel threatened. People liking Dark Souls or thinking it's better than Zelda doesn't invalidate your love of your favorite games. Relax.

They scratch different itches, idk what’s the point of trying to have the two compete. Plus, I think it’s clear Elden Ring took some inspiration from BoTW in some of its open world design. I play Elden Ring when I want great combat and engaging boss battles. I play BoTW/Tears of the Kingdom when I want to run around in a sprawling sandbox and engage with one of the best physics/chemistry systems in a video game. For example, weather doesn’t make meaningful gameplay changes in Elden Ring like it does in Zelda. In Zelda, you can warm yourself up in a snowy area by walking around with a torch, or cool yourself down in the desert by shooting and making water monster parts explode. Or you can steal enemy weapons and the NPCs will pick up whatever is nearby, which can be a trap weapon you lay down (like a metal weapon while it’s raining, which means they’ll get shocked by the lightning). Ultimately, these two games are great for what they do individually, and each provide unique mechanics to the player that aren’t available or as fleshed out in the other.

@theprometheusprimeshow
@theprometheusprimeshow Жыл бұрын
I would say that even though the enemies don't really have stamina or limits in magic; what ultimately makes the encounters fair is the fact that there are telegraphed attack patterns and gaps between the combos allowing for the player character to capitalize on those gaps and land a few hits before the attacks continue. Same goes for magic; in most games that have combat, the enemies generally have unlimited ammo, stamina, and magic regardless; I agree with you that if it was limited, that would make for a more realistic experience, but would only cause the dark souls A.I as is; to be even more exploitable than it already is.
@KK-wh8mm
@KK-wh8mm Жыл бұрын
Enemies actually do have limitations but their bars are invisible. This was easier to discern in DS2 and DS3 - especially DS3 in which you could stagger enemies. Magical enemies don't seem to have a limited amount of magic, but the developers made magic users (especially in DS1) to be glass cannons. Unlimited magic, but very little defense and health.

INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY AND ITS FUTURE Introduction 1. The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. They have greatly increased the life-expectancy of those of us who live in “advanced” countries, but they have destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world. The continued development of technology will worsen the situation. It will certainly subject human beings to greater indignities and inflict greater damage on the natural world, it will probably lead to greater social disruption and psychological suffering, and it may lead to increased physical suffering even in “advanced” countries. 2. The industrial-technological system may survive or it may break down. If it survives, it MAY eventually achieve a low level of physical and psychological suffering, but only after passing through a long and very painful period of adjustment and only at the cost of permanently reducing human beings and many other living organisms to engineered products and mere cogs in the social machine. Furthermore, if the system survives, the consequences will be inevitable: There is no way of reforming or modifying the system so as to prevent it from depriving people of dignity and autonomy. 3. If the system breaks down the consequences will still be very painful. But the bigger the system grows the more disastrous the results of its breakdown will be, so if it is to break down it had best break down sooner rather than later. 4. We therefore advocate a revolution against the industrial system. This revolution may or may not make use of violence; it may be sudden or it may be a relatively gradual process spanning a few decades. We can’t predict any of that. But we do outline in a very general way the measures that those who hate the industrial system should take in order to prepare the way for a revolution against that form of society. This is not to be a POLITICAL revolution. Its object will be to overthrow not governments but the economic and technological basis of the present society. 5. In this article we give attention to only some of the negative developments that have grown out of the industrial-technological system. Other such developments we mention only briefly or ignore altogether. This does not mean that we regard these other developments as unimportant. For practical reasons we have to confine our discussion to areas that have received insufficient public attention or in which we have something new to say. For example, since there are well-developed environmental and wilderness movements, we have written very little about environmental degradation or the destruction of wild nature, even though we consider these to be highly important.

I don't like dark souls because of the horrid death-loop it's designed around. I do not enjoy being punished by a game. THis does not make dark souls bad... I quite enjoy watching others that plays it and the other Souls (Bloodborne included) games, cuz they allow me to not suffer the hypertension-causing spikes in my blood pressure from repeatedly dying to the same boss over and over cuz of extremely unfair balance towards the player.

i say this as the casualest fire emblem enjoyer; the Fire Emblem games all being the same is a fucking insane (and wrong) take. saying genealogy and thracia are the same game makes me feel like i'm in a madhouse. the world is the same and one takes place during the other, but the mechanics between games tend to vary wildly. you also tend to get a completely new cast of characters (that i think are personally garbage in the later entries, AND the regurgitated old heroes finding more and more contrived ways to show up in them dampens my point but i think it still stands)
@theprometheusprimeshow
@theprometheusprimeshow 4 ай бұрын
I agree with your statement. My take wasn't that the fire emblem games i named are the same. In that particular argument, I was saying that these games are just as repetitive, if not more so than the dark souls franchise to make a point about the double standards that Harman Smith has for Nintendo titles. These games are different. However, Harman Smith was specifically talking about repetitive gameplay, and i think it's fair to say that as great as the franchise is in terms of gameplay; if you've played a fire emblem game, you've played them all.

I thought BotW was alright, but not the 10/10 that every gaming outlet ever said it was. It's fun to run around in and I genuinely like the combat, but the weapon durability sucks(I'm annoyed that TotK didn't really do much to fix it), the sidequests are terrible, the dungeons are lame, the story kind of sucks, there's almost no enemy variety, and once you're done exploring, there's little of anything worthwhile to do in the world. BotW is a 7.5/10 at best.

I think BotW is 'good', but it's nowhere near the shining beacon of perfection that many make it out to be. So many people (Nintendo fanboys in particular) acting like it is the best open world game ever made. Let's face it, they only come to that conclusion because they've never played an open world game before it and/or because anything with the name 'Zelda' should automatically be regarded as a masterpiece. I honestly had more enjoyment with Skyrim than BotW. I thought the graphics were much more impressive too.

@theprometheusprimeshow
@theprometheusprimeshow Жыл бұрын
Yeah I understand how that can stand out. I don't really like saying dark souls is hard, I think it's more punishing than difficult; maybe I'm biased in saying that because I am okay at the game now; but when you think about it most of the difficulty that the game has comes from how much progress you lose when you fail. I doubt most people would complain about the difficulty if every bonfire was outside the boss areas.

This guy claiming people only pretend to like Dark Souls because we don't have Zelda is pretty funny considering for me it's the opposite. I used to be a huge Zelda fan but none of its sequels ever recaptured that feeling of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, and I haven't bothered finishing them ever since Skyward Sword. Meanwhile a Zelda-themed Souls game sounds like the best thing ever.
@That1PissedOffBoomer

Okay but let me ask you what do you think inspired Dark Souls? I'm the complete opposite, I love Zelda and DS is great but it can't touch Zelda. But that's okay it's not supposed to. It won't ever it's not even possible. Because Zelda has influenced so many games in order for Dark Souls to do with the Zelda franchise has done the creators of Dark Souls would have to go back in time and remake or make a version of dark souls for the NES and change the timeline and influence everything past then. Regardless, I don't understand what you mean when you say no Zelda game ever recaptured the Brilliance of Ocarina of Time because I completely disagree. The only Zelda game that made me want to punch a freaking baby is Zelda 2 which I will never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever play again. I pretty much love the rest and they all how varying mechanics of brilliance that make me love them. And I'm a Nintendo Fanboy the difference is I also have a PS5 I also have an Xbox series X I also have a laptop a PC and I think combined right now I'm bouncing back and forth between 24 games.
