Lakeside went down for 3 reasons. 1) Somerset Mall, 2) Partridge Creek, 3) Great Lakes Crossing. These newer and “cooler” malls surrounded Lakeside from the East, North, and Southwest. This is what choked the life out of Lakeside. It’s not because of online shopping or Covid. Those malls are doing fine regardless of that. Oh and Sears and Lord & Taylor going down didn’t help either.

Partridge creek has 100% taken over, but also for good reasons, its just a way nicer place to be being a outdoor mall and all. Somerset is more grand but also kinda of a pain to walk and park, however people don't mind and definitely still thriving too
@Ottobon5 ай бұрын
@@mergat2970Maybe but as a local i can tell you on a daily basis much of it is booming, although it may be more for its dining, walking, and variety of smaller shops. I had never been to it pre covid but if nothing else can say the dining side is still doing very well. No expert on the matter but anchor stores of old in general largely imploded, partridge creek seems to work because most of its appeal is there despite this, just shifted. Still a great place to just walk around, a place all the trendy people can be seen. Lakeside by contrast literally was empty inside besides often singular shop employees, and a handful of people or families you would pass by every other stretch or time you turned a corner

Mother-in-Law used to call it the Dawn of the Dead Mall, because it used to have a theater, and she saw that there, and came to associate them. Bought my favorite Stetson cap from there, one Memorial Day weekend. Asian Connection, FYE, Spencer's, or even the lounges by the indoor fountain, where Santa would set up every year for pictures... As a Gen Xer & 80s kids I think what ultimately killed the malls and really a lot of American Department stores and stores that filled malls was NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) because it put American's out of work. Most of us that grew up middle to working class in the 80s remember our parents taking us to the mall every weekend to buy things and go out to eat somewhere. Before NAFTA there were plants and factories all over America, you could find different things from clothes, towels, machinery, you name it made proudly in small towns all over America. After NAFTA those factories shut down and moved operations and production to places like Mexico or China where there were no labor standards and minimum wages. The ultimate death of malls and stores in America is that the middle/working class is dying and struggling to stay afloat.

@@stephaniegormley9982 Good eye! Wow, I never picked up on that. If I recall, Briarwood also had the hex-shaped tile like Fairlane before the 2003 renovation (I was 19 then so memory is fading). Twelve Oaks was always sort of a one-off design from that batch of malls, I remember when I was a kid it had terrazzo floors in geometric shapes of white, orange and brown but they tiled over it in the 90s. About a year ago I was walking up to the entrance and suddenly realized (after going there for decades) that original floor color pattern was replicated on the brick pattern outside for the mall-portion (non-department store) walls. My late dad worked on all of them as well as the RenCen and it's sad to see them all falling like dominos. There's going to be nothing left from the '70s to preserve.

"It must have been a popular mall..." In the early 199os, the choices for a mall if you lived in northern Macomb County (which is NOT Metro-Detroit) was Lakeside or Birchwood in Port Huron (which was brand new.) If you wanted to see a movie, the choices were Marine City (guaranteed to be cheap), Kraft in Fort Gratiot, 16 Mile Road, or Hall Road. I really wanted to go, just one more time before it finally closed for good. It's been on the cards for years and the last time I went, a few years ago, I was shocked how quiet it was. Nothing to how I remembered it from the 1990s. Such a shame. 😊
@BeeKay515010 күн бұрын
I can remember when it had a four screen theater in it, an arcade, when you could smoke in it. Hanging there in the late 90s/early 00s. Meeting girls. Hanging with friends. Dropping $300 on clothes. Man, I miss it.

Great video, Anthony; sad to see another mall close... I'm surprised at how busy this mall is, for it to be closing. Heartbreaking as usual 💔 Awesome footage, and love to see your videos, as always!! Keep up your amazing work, and take care of your little family - he'll be here before you know it!! ❤

It’s so sad, the mall was part of my childhood, it was an adventure when we would go out to the mall, go into the cool stores get the treats at the food court etc. I also spent time at the mall as a young adult, Lakeside was one of them. I love the malls, I don’t understand why they are going to close them all💔 everyone just stays in there homes now, no reason to leave anymore. I hated when movie rental places closed, Friday nights we would take our daughter to get some movies, snacks and a movie for us to all watch together and the new release for us to watch when she went to bed. It was a fun, planned night, something to look forward to. Now it feels like there is nothing left to do unless you have a ton of money to spend to go out and do something. I feel lost when I am trying to plan something to do, malls are closed, no movie rentals etc everything costs at least $100 minimum if you want to go do a family thing on an Friday or Saturday. Sad:(

The accelerated closing of so many malls and iconic stores is beyond sad! Are we ultimately going to be stuck with Amazon or Walmart as our shopping choices? I can't believe that people will find this acceptable!

I am really kicking myself for not going the last day. I would have met you and Wallie. Shit. This mall is an old friend. It wasn’t cookie cutter to me. This mall was hurt by Partridge Creek. Best of luck to you on baby Ace. They are demolishing the mall as we speak. They will break ground next spring.

Are they starting to demo already wow, I haven't been over that way in a few weeks. I wish I would have gone once more as well. The last time I went was this past November but it was a good and nostalgic visit with my cousin for a few hours.

@@jeffherrington , they are starting. Not going too fast from what I understand. The closed 6/30. They weren’t joking about taking it down by the end of the fall though.

Ace I wish you could have seen Randall Park in it's heyday. It was an amazing place. But like a lot of others the knuckle heads came in and started making trouble. It became a very unsafe place to visit. Now it's an Amazon hub.

This mall wasn’t cookie cutter even if there was a near exact replica in Maryland. This mall was thee place to be in late 70’s, 80’s, and early 90’s. I know because I was there. In Decembers back in the day people used to have to park up on the lawn on the outside edge of the circle. Thats how packed it got.

@@AcesAdventures1 I’ve seen a lot of malls too and even other Taubmans but none just exactly like this one.

@@drewblue1164 to clarify, what I meant was it was a typical Taubman
@drewblue11645 ай бұрын
@@AcesAdventures1 That’s better. Telling people from SEM that Lakeside was “cookie cutter” is like telling someone from Buffalo “wide right” or “drive for five” and then laughing in their face about it. Lakeside was a very special place to literally MILLIONS of people for about 3 decades before it started to decline due to the 3 newer malls that surrounded it. Thats why you saw the most people you have ever seen at a mall’s last day.

Love seeing this. It looks much busier than its sister mall in MoCo Maryland did on its last day. Thanks for capturing this Ace and as always fantastic work. P.S. Congrats on the new little one on the way.

You should go to birchwood mall, it's a mall that's like 45 minutes north of lakeside and it is also a dead mall. It's dead but is still dying more and more. It has a lot of those nick nackey stores that are there for a couple months and then go out of buisness.

@@AcesAdventures1 Detroit is the most improvement sports city of 2024!! The Lions went all the way to the NFC Championship game and end up lost to the 49ers and failed to make it to the super bowl. The Red Wings won 41 games and finished the tie with Washington for the final wild card spot in the East but the almost made it to the playoffs but they left out this year. The Pistons finished another worst record in the NBA as result of suffering a 28-game losing streak, finished at 14-68, and then they fired Monty Williams after a single season and replaced by JB Brickerstaff. Last without least, the Tigers are now several games below .500, they are very disappointed. 2025 might be a fantastic year for Detroit sports.
