This is so sad this was my 90’s hangout spot. When it had Spencer’s, game rooms and good food. I heard there is a plan in place to bring it back to life. Such a sad story!

I opened the Radio Shack store next to Sears as manager in 1981. My father worked at Sears. I would grab him for a burger 🍔 in the food court once a week or so. Those were the days. So many memories. My uncles were the contractors for the concrete foundation for the mall’s construction. This is as sad as anything I have ever seen. So vibrant in the early 80’s. There has to be a purpose for these malls now. They should not be cast off as uninhabitable. This is fixable. Where is the will?

I live in Metro Detroit but I pass thru Benton Harbor sometimes to visit family. This mall failed mostly because of crime and white flight. However if those weren't factors, Benton Harbor/St.Joseph is just too small to support a mall. I kind of wish the town could just tear it down and turn it into a park. Heck they could remidate the property and turn it back into an apple orchard/cider mill for locals.

There are a number of malls in Michigan that should never have been built. One that comes to mind is the Midland Mall. My grandparents live in Midland and I visited them a lot when I was younger. We would go to the mall and it was livelier a couple decades ago than it is now, but I don't ever think it was a successful property.

Crime and white flight were around since well before the mall collapse. Almost all of the malls around the country have collapsed except for very large ones in very populated areas. This one is just in too small of a community to be able to sustain that much brick and mortar when that's not how commerce works any more.

"Ruff's Soup and Stuff." Anyone remember that? It was the mid 80s, and some my favorite early, and mid-childhood memories take place at this mall. When I was young, eating out was occasional, and special, and I thought their broccoli cheese soup with croutons was the best thing I ever tasted. I used to go with my mom, just me and her. It was before my brother was born, and those memories are so precious. I loved the chocolate covered bananas, down the way at the ice cream shop on the corner, too. I would always get that or a scoop of bubblegum ice cream on a waffle cone. I have memories of going there with my dad, before he and my mom divorced. These were some of the best times in my life. I was so innocent to the world and it's cruelty. This video makes me want to cry. I miss it so much.

We were talking about what malls should be repurposed for while watching your vid, and the common consensus was,, to turn these into housing, with all the retail that would be common in a neighborhood, restaurants, markets and small business, so much unused space and so many people with no where to go, were really surprised that no developer has thought to do something like that with these spaces/places, with how much civilization shift that is occurring the world over, it's time to reinvent and reinvest to existing brick mortar, Liked your vid, Fullview, Staysafe
@CR-hu1db
@CR-hu1db 3 жыл бұрын
Zoning laws in many places prevent dead malls from being repurposed into anything other than another big box mall. If you have a dead mall in your city, go to city council meetings and see if you can bring it up to them (after doing your research, of course)

They've already tried the public housing experiment (The Projects), didn't go over too well. SO doing it again would be a definition of insanity. Turning these malls into Amazon warehouses probably makes more sense (although that would be ironic, since Amazon has helped kill malls).

In the 80s I cruised Southridge Mall in Milwaukee as a college student working out complex problems. Being around people helped and although I wasn’t really there for shopping, I found a strange comfort being among people that helped my thinking. Later in my studies it was the Philly suburbs and the now defunct Echelon Mall. Security would occasionally question but they understood ‘this is me workin’ it out’. Also amazing was the sheer abundance of retail in the Philly burbs and wondering where does all the money come from to support all these places? ... and who pays these prices!? Things have really changed.

It's so strange how dead malls always seem so clean; they remain well-lit, there's no rubbish or build up of dirt, no tagging or graffiti & no obvious signs of anything damaged or broken. Clearly the cleaners are still working - add to that no people (at all!) & the whole effect is just so spooky...like some kind of 80s straight-to-video horror flick...

Grew up about 25 miles from here in the 80s - Orchards always had a special place with me because my high school sweetheart lived across the river in St. Joseph. Attended LMC in 87, and would hang out here often - the food court had a pretty good pizza place (though the name escapes me) and it was pretty busy back then. Played an event or two with LMC Jazz Band in the mall as well. In the mid-2000s, I'd end up returning at times as I worked on CCTV and anti-theft systems in many of the stores there. The only mall in the area that has bucked the trend of dying malls (so far) has been University Park in Mishawaka, IN...they've somehow held on and grown. I miss the glory days of Orchards, the long-gone Scottsdale in South Bend, IN and Maple Hill Mall in Kalamazoo, Crossroads in Portage, MI when it was a lot busier, and Concord in Elkhart, IN...good times had at all of them. Thanks for sharing this!

It's not the country. Just change in the way people shop. The big box stores like WalMart, Costco, Home Depot, Target and other such stores and online shopping have badly hit malls and also a change in habits like I used to have to wear dress clothes to work in 2012 but around 2015 it all changed and I wear anything now, jeans, t-shit at least for some companies it is this way and that made me reduce mall shopping drastically. On one hand it made work less formal but on the other hand it made it more relaxed and more open and comfortable place to work.

In the United States, local governments use property taxes to generate revenue. Homes are revenue-negative (they cost more to provide city services than the tax revenue they receive directly). Businesses - if functionally operating (such as a mall that is still functional as a place of commerce - which this one isn't) are revenue-positive, the city gains revenue. This is also a reason that so many areas of the US are "overmalled", they have too much unnecessary retail space.

Some few notes as I went here days before Ace went here: I was here early in the morning and the only place open was a post office and Joann's. I too wish the best for the local business owners like the Mattress guy and I guess one of the clothing stores is co-owned by a 9 year old. The restroom by the food court had like 5 signs saying to not steal the toilet paper. That tickled me haha, not sure because of the TP hoarders from the pandemic. Muhammad Ali lived in the area for a while and would frequently visit the mall, there was also a photo of the Iron Sheik doing autographs at the mall too.

I remember on older videos and pics of Orchards Mall, that there used to be a wall of pics of stores here including Walgreens, from the early decades(till the 80s or 90s I think?) of this mall. Is that still inside one of the hallways of this mall anymore, or has that been removed? I didn't see that, from this video Ace just filmed here not long ago.

Yes my daughter is the 9 year old owner of the clothing store Kaydi Kouture located in the mall. Unfortunately to fund her business I work a 9-5 and we open in the afternoons. Thanks for mentioning us in this reply.

It's sad that the younger generations won't know anything about Sears, Hills, K-mart, Ames, Woolworth's, and possibly JC Penney, the way things are going. I also grew up with Chappell's, Addis Co., Dey Brothers and Sibley's...most people don't even know what the hell those stores were unless you grew up in the area :(

Wow! I have so much history with this place! I grew-up in St. Joe, the much nicer of the Twin Cites (St. Joe/Benton Harbor). St. Joe was 99% White, BH was 90% Black. I was 17 years old in 1980, and like most bored teenagers my friends and I liked to hang-out at the mall. Sure, we spent some money there, but like most teenagers we didn't have a lot of money to spend. In those days the mall WAS PACKED! We liked to sit on the planters (large, blocky concrete and tile things that had plants in them that also made great benches) outside the food court and watch people as they walked by, especially the hot girls! Anyway, the dick-head security dweebs would always tell us we couldn't sit on the planters and eventually harassed us for even being in the mall "If you're not actually shopping!" So we left! AND WE NEVER WENT BACK! We grew into adults who did all our shopping at the new Meijer mega-store that opened just on the other side of the mall's parking lot. Then a K-mart and Walmart opened within eyesight of the mall. The mall started to die. I got a job at Meijer working in the photo lab and the shit-head that killed the Red Lobster manager also worked in the lab - for a short time. He was a total POS and I actually got into a heated argument with him about something and he soon after got fired. Then we heard he killed his boss at Red Lobster!!! Crime was always bad in BH (Benton Harbor) and roving hoards would walk through the mall (and other stores and businesses in the area) and shoplift, purse-snatch, harass, start fights, etc. and it drove more and more people away from the BH area. BH USED to be very nice in the 1960's and early 70's- and than people got tired of all the shit and just stayed away. BH became a crime ridden ghost town- and it still is today. Several things killed Orchards Mall: #1 They chased away their future lifeblood by harassing the teenagers who just wanted a place to hang-out with their friends. Then as adults we remembered this and SPENT OUR MONEY ELSEWHERE! #2 The societal rot of the City of Benton Harbor and all the crime and general shittyness that comes with it. #3 Meijer, K-mart and Walmart opened pretty much right next door and took care of the customers better. #4 I'm sure the mall was charging exorbitant rent to the stores that were still trying to make a go of it. #5 General mis-management of the mall itself. I heard stories through the years about how bad it was to work or be a tenant in the mall. So, I have ZERO SYMPATHY FOR ORCHARDS MALL!!! They told me and my friends to leave back in the early 80s- SO WE DID. AND WE NEVER WENT BACK. FUCK 'EM!!! 😒😒😒 Here is (click link) the POS that killed the Red Lobster manager- LIFE imprisonment!!!...... mdocweb.state.mi.us/OTIS2/otis2profile.aspx?mdocNumber=217291

Benton Harbor according to the census has a 45 percent of people living in poverty. I like the music you matched with this. This was another great video. Your videos are extremely well produced and each one gets better. I thought I heard ping pong noises but it was the seagulls doing their thing. Really cool you got into JCP and Carson’s.

What does benton harbor census property rate have to do with a loss of jobs in the community, lack of support and decline in tax paying dollars have to do with an owner’s decline of this mall. The property rate is fairly high because ppl keep making post like this spreading negativity about the city and scaring businesses from wanting to invest in great communities.

Yes! Going in there is like a carnival spookville. You can see the feet and poop of the sea gulls on the sky light windows. There were dead baby birds at the entrance. Dead birds throughout the parking lot. you need an umbrella for the falling poop.

It hasn’t been dead for 20yrs ma’am. This mall took a decline when all malls did in 2015-16 when the slumowner wasn’t keeping up on the bills and investing businesses started to want out. JCPenney just left in 2019. And Sears in 2009-10.
