The Doors music is almost 60 years old now and they are still before their time. The Doors are so unique and intense and never sound outdated.

Epic! "Cancel my subscription to the resurrection!" A barking dog might fit the song well depending on the bark (see Pink Floyd "Dogs"). John Densmore's magnificent drum work during the soft parts, when he lays down a few kinetic rim shots, foretells the drum rhythms used in reggae some few years later. Somebody tried to tell me today that there was no such thing as psychedelic soul music. I'm guessing they have never heard this classic before. Had I known you were down for ten minute epics I might have suggested it as an exemplar instead of their shorter songs. The title on the track and the graphic shown suggest the version from "Live at the Hollywood Bowl, 1968", but that live version is slightly faster paced and it runs nearly 13 minutes. This version is the studio recording, but with the guitar mixed down. The guitar licks come through so much more clearly on the album version.

1967 ... beatnik psychedelic blues rock, or something like that. Beautiful song, presumably about mortality. Morrison here screaming a couple years before Roger Daltrey of The Who, I think. I suppose the lines "before I sink into the big sleep, I want to hear, I want to hear the scream of the butterfly" could be a reference to the classic bit by Zhuang Zhou: "I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly dreaming I am a man." Which is basically the 300 BC version of wondering if we are living in a simulation.

well described. they were their own signature. elusive & tough to peg. it was psychedelic to a degree, esp robbies excellent guitar distortion work in the song.... yet, the lyrics & performance thereof are unique stagecraft & beatnik meets jazz.... then the tone you get as the guitar & organ dance w/ each other was pure blues meet syncopated jazz & even spooky ragtime bass line. Thats why there was no one like them then or now. it didnt always work & its why some critics & musicians imo unfairly never gave them their proper due. but good Lord, when it came together, its so strikingly powerful & standback awe. morrison was a juggernaut when he was really in his groove. a master of understanding silence, space, pace, phrasing & punch. both he & rays work in film at ucla can actually be felt imo in their music. it has a wide scape visual score element to it. atmosphere & lyrical wide scape.... jim was a freak savant talent considering only a year or so before this he had never sung or wrote songs.... they lost their way in '69, but gave them a lot of due to how strongly they ended w/ their last 2 albums. riders, peace frog, wasp have that same creative magic this has. no one will get in these guys zipcode. theyre like dylan and hendrix, too unique.

I've always loved The Doors, found them a few years ago on my 18th birthday and now I've got posters of them all over my wall lol! Great choice and great reaction as usual!

agree.... doors were like giant reptiles that once roamed the earth. we know they were here. we can listen to it in preserved form. but your just not going to hear species like this roam the music scene like this ever again. too singular a vision & unique blend of talents mixed w/ special period.

Jim Morrison and Ray Manzeric Took so much LSD in those days and the Lyrics and music reflected that psychedelic era of the late 1960s. Much of the Rock music at the time reflected the drug culture.

Oh man, the Doors to me are the best rocknroll band ever, Morrison was wild, i think you would love to see him perform live, one of their best show was recorded and it's called 'The Doors Are Open", you can find it here on KZbin, that was from their Europe tour in 1968 at the London roundhouse, that was Jim in his absolute prime wearing all leather and screaming all over.... Really magical and Unique Great video!!!!

Virtually impossible to overstate the case for this song. So well constructed, so beautifully played, so emotionally sung etc. Should be on everyone's playlist but it's not. Go figure.

Hi Ace ❣️ love how you listen to all the good old bands (my favorite era of rock). You should check out some Heart songs. They have so many deep cuts that you would love... a few of da best ones are "Sing Child" and "Cook with Fire" and "Go on Cry". Have Fun. 😉

the doors didnt play. not when they were on their A game. lethal musical power here.... it should be mentioned for both context & significance, this was performed as is, amazingly in the summer of '66. think about that for a sec. Listen to all the music of that year (& it was a very innovative year in music), the truth of the matter, no one was in this zipcode.... I'm amazed they dont get more respect when you consider that talent & power. this imo blows away even anything the beatles, stones, dead or who did that year. at least in singular originality & raw power.... but it must be said, they were also inconsistent & morrison had a lot of baggage in handling fame. I think its partly why they dont get placed quite as high. Plus they were very original & ambitious w/ a style that not everyone got & could come off pretentious or off putting to some. its why they were even split among peers in music w/ their fair share of haters yet also artist who really got them. they defined iconoclastic. never to be seen or repeated again. no one could bring the same mix morrison could when it all came together as here. yes, giants once did actually roam the earth.

@@Markrealguy51 ... jim sadly didnt survive it.... one of the biggest losses to arts was morrison not finding more internal & manag support to allow his special talent to thrive & navigate day to day life.
