Beautiful desk. Pro tip...when applying a large sheet (linoleum, Formica, etc.) with contact cement, place dowels or scrap wood strips between the two surface until positioned correctly, then remove the spacers from one end to the other.

When using contact glue as a carpenter i always laid thin strips (e.c. 10mm x 10mm) of whatever wood across the width of the glued table surface more or less 100 mm apart. Then i put the linoleum glue side down on top those strips so it does not stick yet but it you can position the linoleum. Then you can pull one strip out at a time and press the surfaces together after taking one out. No wrinkles, perfect positioning and no stress ;)

This is crazy. I designed and built a shockingly similar desk 4 weeks ago. Lino finish, beveled edges, rear cutout. The only difference is that I used the back cutout to hide the monitor stand/integrate it and where you sit it’s cut out in a semicircle to allow better access to the work surface. I should add that yours looks fantastically clean too, well done.

Tips on laying down large linoleum: You can always put a couple of wood slats or round rods before laying down the two adhesive material, just enough to lift the linoleum sticking to the other side. So when you lay down the linoleum there is enough adjustments to fix your overhangs. Work your way one end. And then pulling out the slats/rods out as as you go. Hope this helps for future videos. A great simple desk, and love the black and wood contrast.

I can assume someone else may have already posted this but a very easy way to apply a laminate to a surface is by laying scrap wood strips across the surface (after glue is applied and tacky). This will support the laminate until you are lined up and ready to glue it down. Starting in the middle pull out a stick and let the laminate come in contact then the next stick and so on. Once all down you should be lined up right and air bubble free. Use a weighted roller to get a good glue bond. Beautiful desk! I love the details and modern design you build.

Would probably suggest putting another hole in the back of that drawer with a fan to circulate the air in there because the heat some batteries put off while charging could turn it into a bit of a hot box for your other batteries. Probably not needed for most but just a suggestion depending on the batteries you charge/use and how hot they get.

I you use sticks as spaces, you can put the linoleum sheet easy and calmly on top of your desk. Then remove the middle stick, so the two surfaces touch (and stick to each other) and then work out to each side very easy and with no stress. The sticks will not get stuck to the contact cement if it is dry enough for assembly.

I love your minimalistic designs :), however, I wouldn't recommend shoving a lot of battery chargers into a drawer without ventilation. I got a thermal camera for Christmas and with such a tool you can really see that chargers are getting pretty hot and also warming up their surroundings quite fast.

Great Desk Alexandre. If you ever have to stick down a surface like that linoleum again, try using dowels as spacers. You glue both surfaces as you did, but then once it has dried you place dowels or strips of wood every few centimetres on the substrate (table top). Place your vinyl (or formica) on the dowels, and then work from one end pressing down and rolling out the air bubbles. Work towards the other end, removing the dowels as you go. This process is a lot less stressful, you don't have to do it all right in one go, and you are less likely to trap air bubbles.

Great video! Beautiful table! One tip... When putting the black laminate on. Once the adhesive was applied to both surfaces you could put thin strips of wood as temporary spacers on the table top, lay the laminate on top of the spacers, align it and the remove sticks one at a time starting form the middle they apply pressure from the middle to ensure no bubbles. Anyhow, what you did worked just fine ;)

12:16 I curled up into a ball from seeing the lathe chuck key in the chuck, it's a good habit to get into to keep it always out of the chuck so there's never a situation where it gets flung from the chuck

Hey just a reminder if you are not aware of it, tree dust on a lathe makes It rust very fast!! (I'm a machinist my self) so remember to put oil on the lathe bed and cross slide every time after you worked with tree on it, or else you're lathe cant move in a year :))) -- Mery Christmas from Denmark

Yeah personally I'd have done like I've seen it on other projects cut the hole all the way through and just put a screw in plug or something underneath so if it breaks you can unscrew it and put in a new one. Not fond of permanent tech in my furniture. I like them to be user serviceable or changeable

Pro tip use wood clamps as spacers when Installing linoleum or laminate. You can line it up then pull the clamps out and the linoleum will be aligned when it sticks.

re the camera bump and charging - you could chisel/route out a rectangle for the bump to kill 2 birds with 1 stone. fool proof alignment of the device to chage and also making it sit flat.

Amazing work! For the magsafe charger you could draw (maybe in white) the perimeters of the phone to the table surface. So you will know where to place it for charging, without searching for the right spot.

Alexandre, hi. You can use old case for just finding right place(as template) - take some marks for camera module bounds and push that place in linoleum some bellow. Some kind of minimal functional spot

Just an idea you could cut out an x,very thin, and have had an small led diode up the MagSafe spot. Might be a tad hard to do that now that it’s done. A little thin strip of diffuser would light up the x for the charge spot.

Good to see you using a tracksaw in this one. I don't have or even want a table saw so use a tracksaw for everything. I liked your contraption for your router to trim off that thick edge banding. You could have also used it for the thinner stuff I would imagine. Mirka sander in there as well...pretty fancy. I have the older model. Wish I had have waited to buy the newer ones without the awkward power box.

That's a really nice build! After Christmas I want to start working on insulating my garage to turn it into a shop, and a desk is probably one of my first projects I want to work on. I want full blown cable management and outlets etc so it's always cool to see other builds to get ideas. My only concern is the fact that the charger is not easy to swap out though. Apple changes stuff all the time so whatever next phone you get will probably not work with that charger.

For the charger - You could put a light grey vinyl outline where the phone should go on your work surface. The grey contrasting with the color of your tabletop would give it a cool "blueprint" kind of look, and you would always know where to put the phone.

The desk is great! You should add a very subtle graphics to help centering your phone with the charger. I know it could ruin the clean look, but if you play it well it could look even better. Like 4 little dots indicating the corners of the phone, they can even be dark grey so they're near invisible unless your looking for them. Not finding the right charging spot would drive me crazy every time 🤣

I'd love to see an animated timeline at the bottom of project videos like this that starts with the design effort and BOM ordering, then shows the actual work duration (including interruptions), with highlights for time spent in the shop with cameras on. Like what SpaceX does for their launch videos, but without the flames and stuff. More than once I've started projects that look quick in video, perhaps a weekend effort, that then took over a month IRL. I'd like to get a better idea up-front on how projects compare, then add a multiplier of about 10x.

You could outline the camera bump and engrave that shape into the table top. So when setting down the phone the camera bump aligns the phone and the phone stays flat too.
