Identification with the body establishes a unit of life different from other life (other people, animals) and from no-life (rocks). From this emerges the goal of trying to continue this unit of life at the cost of other life and non-life. This creates the competitive, game-theoretic landscape that we call "world". The world is amazing. A billion MIT engineers working for a billion years cannot even start to design a bacteria that can survive for a million years. But those who are tired of the game of survival are naturally equipped to opt out. It does not matter if my DNA continues. It does not matter if my kin's DNA continues. It does not matter if my country's DNA continues. It does not matter if any DNA continues. This opting out can be called spirituality. Because opting out will probably not be good for survival of your DNA, people who have opted out will always be a minority. Opting out will probably not appeal to those who are not yet tired of the game. If you get a high from designing a new type of fusion reactor that can fail safely allowing for rapid evolution of the design, you still love the game. Spirituality appeals to those who have succeeded, not those who are still trying or those who have failed.

The same has been quoted in the Bhagavad Gita the following way. ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS The one who walks the Path of detachment becomes free from the objects of the senses, but not from the taste for the objects. But even the taste for them vanishes in the one who has cognized the Supreme!
