Being friends with Phil Campbell and a bass player, I actually jammed with Phil , Wursel and Jason Bonham on drums at a Motorhead rehearsal. With Lemmys permission, I used his rig and Ricky as he was going down the pub. Its was actually a scary thing to stand in front of. Loud. Sound like no other. Could very well have been the guitar in this film. A great man of rock and roll.

With Lemmy, as with everyone. The best example I can think of was John Entwistle. The Ox constantly changed his basses and equipment, always seeking to further refine his tone as he imagined it. But no matter what he used, Entwistle sounded like himself. Jaco played a fretless Jazz that Fender now offers a replica of from their Custom Shop... But owning one doesn't make you play like Jaco. There are many signature models of guitars and basses but you'll wind up sounding like yourself in the end. Lemmy played loud and with attitude! There, that's the Lemmy tone!
@eldiablo37943 жыл бұрын
@@paulsimmons5726 Yea I totally agree. Honestly Lem and Entwistle have VERY similar styles... one of John's roadies said the who was really two guitarists and a drummer lol. Lem and John are very similar because they're both guitarists first who later on picked up the bass and they both played the bass like a guitar.. from their chord progressions and having loud turned up walls of full stacks. John played both finger plucking and with a pick even though Lem played with a pick all the time. I love John's nonchalant style and approach to his playing. Pulling off crazy licks while looking like he was bored. If you get a chance you should check out his documentary, "John Entwistle: An Ox's Tale" such an awesome documentary on him.

“I believe that’s (super bass 100) a guitar amp”. It was Marshall’s bass amp. The circuit is similar to a super lead but optimized for bass by different cap, resistor and pot values. The first concert I ever went to by a well known band was Motörhead. Brian Robertson just replaced Fast Eddie. At one point Lemmy just quit playing for a couple of seconds, because he saw a girl with big tits (his words, not mine 😬). I didn’t even really notice a huge difference. That bass rig had so much high end, it sounded like a second heavily distorted guitar. It was a concert I’ll never forget. For many reasons. 😬

A lot of the reason is that guitar amps (and also their speakers) tend to roll off frequencies 80Hz and below. This will give a nice midrange punch, but not a whole lot of deep bass. A proper bass amp will have the low side of the eq tuned to around 30-40Hz and will typically use speakers that can reproduce those frequencies with some authority. That caters to the traditional role of a bass much better than a typical guitar rig.

In my opinion Lemmy's bass never sounded its best on the Cameron Webb albums. The albums overall have a great sound, but its all a wall of guitars. Lemmy's bass intro on Rock Out for instance sounds way too muddy. The best bass sound Lemmy ever had was on the Stage Fright Dvd. I've heard rumors that the FOH tech used to have a Di box to blend a clean bottom end signal with the amps bright overdrive tone picked up by the mic's from the cabinets, as opposed to trying to get more bottom end out of his bass rig. Not an unusual technique. But Lemmy sure made it sound unusual.

If I am wrong, please correct me. Just would have loved to hear what Lemmy would have done with an 8 string Rick thru the same rig... Thank you for the video.

Actually, the typical bassist plays 12”s. And while it’s true that Ampeg SVT’s are a legendary sound and also commonly used amongst professional touring/recording bassists, most average gigging bass players use 12”s as they are more portable and full sounding.
