Naked Ireland

Naked Ireland

6 ай бұрын

So here we are in Part 3 of our Naked Ireland video on Achill Island and today we’re heading south-east from Dooagh to the village, or I should say the beach at Dooega. And of course we have the beach entirely to ourselves. Just to remind you that these videos in Achill were shot in late October, so I wouldn’t expect to see the beaches quite as deserted in the summer. Nor would I normally expect this kind of weather in October - I’ve been very lucky.
A lot of work goes into these videos. You can now buy me a pint as a means of appreciation for my work on Naked Ireland, no obligation, obviously - only if you can afford it... I appreciate it. Cheers.

The beach at Dooega lies in Camport Bay. Fairly isolated in that it’s approached by a single small road. This is in fact a blue flag beach, so it meets the exacting standards required to qualify as a swimming destination. Always remember though that this is the North Atlantic and waters in the West of Ireland can be very dangerous, so only swim if there’s a life guard on duty. In any case this place is worth a visit whether you are a swimmer or not as it’s just incredibly gorgeous.
There are only a handful of inhabited buildings in the vicinity of the beach, making it feel very private and a very special place. Part of the beach is sandy and part is stones, so you’ve the best of both worlds. Don’t try camping here though, or parking up for the night in your campervan. And, you don’t have to go very far to see that this part of Ireland has a strong tradition of fishing .
On the way back we pass back through Achill Sound and across the bridge to the mainland.

That was beautiful. Short but sweet! I could smell the seaweed on the shore and imagine the sound of the sea. Wild and full of nature, can't go wrong with that combination, at least not in my book. Cheers again! Great wee job you got going there Greg!

Nice video, but I'm a little sad you didn't leave Achill by seeing more of the south of the island where there is an amazingly scenic road with views over Clew Bay and Achill Sound. I think there are better, more secluded beaches along this stretch of coast and it really took my breath away on a very windswept day. There's also the Grainne O'Malley Towerhouse at Kildavnet which would have been well worth a visit, but I guess you have time constraints to keep to. Maybe one for a future visit? Achill has such an otherworldly charm that feels like nowhere else I've been in Ireland.

Yes Matt, that’s exactly it, time constraints, but I’ll be back and I’ll check out some of those other places, so thanks so much for pointing them out.

Wot no sheep! I am very disappointed Greg 😝 That's my kinda of beach, deserted 😁 I'd have stopped at the Supavalu on the way out for an iceberger, I do miss those 😃

Good point, there are more Sheep than people down there, I'm told an Achill Sheep is lower in Value than others as it's meat is not as tender! No idea how they survive on that land

There were a couple of sheep Rob, in a field (where they should be) just off to the right of the shot as I walked up the lane. But, no Jaywalking sheep this time!

@@nakedireland That's the funny thing, it's unique at it was meant to be left dormant! Everywhere else the stone was re-used! As mysterious in purpose as the farmer up the road from it who built his own Stone Henge "Achillhenge"
