I’m so glad that I found your video(s)! I ruptured my Achilles and my timeline to recovery matches similarly with yours. And that’s a first as I’ve been told countless stories about it taking 9 months to a year for some. And while i get everyone’s road to recovery is different, i did have little slivers of curiosity about whether or not I’d been given realistic expectations by my med team. So, THANK YOU for sharing your journey and being an extra bit of affirmation for me and my own☺️ I stumbled upon your video trying to “learn how to walk in a boot without crutches” lol but I’m getting much more. Thank you!

Oh yayyy! so glad to hear this 🥲 I was feeling the exact same way at the begging too. I'm just over 4 months post op now and walking on my own no problem - just not as active still (running, jumping, playing basketball) like I was but I can definitely feel it's a lot closer. You'll get there soon! LMK if you need to talk anything through!

Hi Alexa! Thank you so much for posting us! My recovery is exactly at the point where your video takes place, a year ago now. I live by myself, I’m a little older, and it was extremely comforting to hear someone else sharing their experience with me, especially because you’re so relatable! It was also extremely interesting for me to hear about your conversations with your doctor compared to mine (and the stitches you had on your heel, I did not have that). I haven’t seen your later videos yet, so I’m eager to see how your recovery ends up!

Hi Alexa, I’m from Cape Town, South Africa and about 2 & half weeks ago while on a Work Project in Zambia, I ruptured my Achilles Tendon… got back to Cape Town and had the op to repair….so for the past 15days I have been laying at home managing the pain and tomorrow I finally have my first appointment with the Dr post surgery to remove stitches and I suppose to get my boot… was feeling pretty nervous about what to expect tomorrow so came across your video and your experience and have to admit it’s a huge help to calm my nerves for tomorrow lol. Had my Achilles surgery 9/2/22 and going to my first post op on 9/15/22. I’m checking out the calsports website you linked. Reading up makes me become more knowledgeable and know what to expect and I can come in to my doctor ready for any questions I may have. Thank you so much. Thank you so much for sharing, I have the same injury. It's been almost a month from when I injured my Achilles tendon. My orthopedic Doc said I should have the non surgery approach,. I start my therapy in 2 weeks. I hope it's not to soon for rehab. I had a hard cast for 2 weeks, then switched to a soft cast with 3 wedges in heal area. Doc said they will slowly remove wedges. My Achilles tendon was a complete tear, I hope I can return to work and sports. soon I hope you have a speedy recovery & feel better soon.

My surgery ended up being more extensive than the Dr anticipated. (He said he'd never seen a case as bad as mine and he even had med students studying my case.) My incision was from my heel to the bottom of my calf. I had to be non weight bearing for 7 weeks. I ended up ordering the KneeRover All Terrain knee scooter from Amazon. Thank you so much Alexa. You got the mid-substance bridge implant which I discovered after my surgery was done: to me, it is a the best technique to prevent re-ruptures and it was not until the day of the surgery that my doctor told me that they do not do that. mid-substance bridge implant is bullet proof against re-ruptures. There is no better support system than these people who have gone thru this and are kindly sharing their experience. I just got my hard cast removed and my surgeon has my food in the boot at 20% angle + 25% body weight allowed on the food with crutches support. Then after 2 weeks, I am supposed to move to 10% angle and 50% of body weight allowed on the injured foot still with crutches. Physical therapy has also been ordered and if things go well, I'm supposed to be dropping the crutches at the 2 months after surgery mark. I'm lucky enough to be able to work from home and I am using that time to pursue the things I putting off for years because I was "too busy running around" This is the ultimate test of patience and mental resilience. Foot in boot when sleeping and whenever working. Foot in boot when sleeping because some people accidentally re-rupture while sleeping. I move myself to a bunk bed and mounted a PC monitor to the roof of the bed so I can work and study with minimal movement. Worse possible scenario would be a re-rupture because I'm heavy and I can tear that joint again. Which would be a nightmare. There was really no pain that required that I take the Oxycodone or Gabapentin or even Ibuprofen because I’m truly anti medication (unless absolutely necessary). This is a Tylenol extra strength kind of injury for me. No ice either and I was not trying to prove anything to anyone.

Hey Alexa! Just want to say thanks for this series, I’m so glad I found your channel- I also work in tech and love your vibe and the ‘main’ topics of your channel as well 😊. I’m about 2 weeks in now (hurt it playing soccer) and feel like I’m on a similar path. I actually started PT at 11 days, doing toe curls with my foot flat on the ground HURT! I’m in the boot now and my PT said I could be 25% weight bearing but im scared it’s too soon! Did you also feel a lot of pain/fear of re-injury at first? Any tips to overcome it? Thanks again! 😊
@HelloImAlexa
@HelloImAlexa Жыл бұрын
Hiiii thank you! So glad you're into both (very different) topics 😅 Yeah, ahhh there's definitely a lot of pain throughout the post-op journey. Your doctor and PT know your case the best so if they say you can start giving 25% weight bearing a shot, I think you should try for it! Of course, if you're not comfortable or don't feel ready - you've gotta go with your gut on things sometimes too. I personally had strong goals to get myself to playing bball again and my doctor and PT knew that so they helped push me with that in mind. I always felt safe with every new move I was in this journey because I would always be going along with their guidance and typically one of them would be there for those big steps. You may also want to work with your PT on putting 25% weight bearing when you are there together so they can help you along the way! Hope that helps. Sending good vibes your way 💪

Ahhh! Sorry to hear that. Highly recommend Doctor Paul Murphy and his team based in La Jolla. They referred me out to a great physical therapist near to where I live. I also didn’t start PT at a studio until around 7-8 weeks post op. Obviously like we acknowledged, everyone’s path will look a bit different but maybe that can give you some piece of mind that you may have some time to figure it out and get back to the states. Hi Alexa! I cannot even begin to say how grateful I am to have found your channel! I ruptured my achilles last week and I'm going in for surgery tomorrow. I, like you, have never had a surgery before and half of the fear is not knowing what to expect! Your video series have been helped put me at ease! :) Quick question - once you moved into the boot were you fully walking/weight bearing on your foot? Or is it still scooter / crutches? And when you showered at this point, were you standing flat footed in the shower? Thank you again for putting this content out there! It has obviously helped so many people - including me! :) Thank you!! - Michelle

Heyyy Michelle - ah, I'm so glad to hear my videos have been helpful for you in that way 🥲 I hope surgery day went well for you! I moved from splint to boot after one week and I actually was completely non-weight bearing until I walked for the first time in my boot around the 4 week mark per my doctors order. I was using crutches / scooter right away; I think I left bed for the outside world for first time after 2 days. I sat while I was showering up until the point where I was able to walk with my boot on - so the 4 week mark and still then I was VERY careful not to move too much in the shower to prevent possible re-rupture. Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions and again wishing you the best with your recovery as well!

@@bnakanishi I recommend using whatever high strength pain meds they gave you post surgery! I wasn’t in much pain post surgery but once I started ROM exercises I got back on oxycodone. If I had to do it again I’d get back on oxycodone a day prior to starting ROM exercises. It was only painful/uncomfortable for a couple days but during that time I did not sleep well and slight movements of the foot were really annoying and painful. I'm on Day 9 in cast since the operation. Basically, I do not do much expect lie down on the bed and elevated the injury leg. My doctor ordered in-home nurse and PT for me but I do think I need nurse. I can move around like you using knee scooter and crutches. I am wondering what leg exercises I can do from now to my next doctor appointment at day 14 on 12/14/2023. May I move my toes while my leg still in cast? Any thoughts appreciated. Thank you.

Hey Alexa! Thank you for all the updates! One question: so if I understood correctly at your 2 week post op visit, you were in a boot in a natural position but still NWB. I also saw that at 4 week mark you were able to start walking in a boot without crutches. Did you not have to do any partial WB? I read/saw where many folks start with wedges and they remove 1 each week and get to neutral so was just curious about learning your protocols! Thank you!

Hi there! You're so welcome 🙂 Yes that is correct, I was in boot at neutral pretty early on. I was non-weight bearing for the first 4 weeks and then fully weight bearing after 4 weeks. It does seem like a lot of people do partial first but I did not. My boot also didnt have any wedges, it had a lever mechanism which moved the boot into position. My doctor had a pretty aggressive protocol compared to others it seems. Hope thats helpful!

So I am a little nervous that it’s all going to come after surgery. But I also wanted to ask, when were you able to start putting weight on your foot post op? I feel like being able to bear some weight while wearing the boot and using crutches is better than no weight at all like I’m experiencing right now! So thankful for my knee scooter though lol
@HelloImAlexa
@HelloImAlexa Жыл бұрын
Hellllllo! You're surgery is this week right? I'm certain it's going to go great. I have never had surgery before and was very nervous as well. Luckily, I had an amazing group of surgeons helping me feel comfortable throughout my time in the surgery center and that meant everything to me. After surgery can be tough too but if you're able to prep your space beforehand to set you up better for success once you're home that will help a lot. And treat yourself with something special once you're out - my husband picked me up a boba milk tea for after I was out which was my fav and that made me feel better for sure :) As far as putting weight on your leg goes, I definitely recommend asking your doctor for what they recommend here. They know your case the best since they were the one who operated on you! From my understanding, there's been a lot of new research on achilles injuries lately which suggest early weight bearing but again, I wouldn't necessarily go against your doctor's recommendation. You could ask this of them and see what they think. Early weight bearing for me looked like going from splint/boot for weeks 0-4 and then at week 4 I started walking on it. I never did partial weight bearing 🤷‍♀️ Sending you good wishes for surgery and a start to a smooth recovery!

I just wanted to share my experience here, and ask some questions. I am now 3 weeks and half since surgery/injury ( got surgery within 12 hours), and also this was my second achilles tendon rupture (first one was my left, after 4 years now right leg). My two injuries, surgeries, and rehabs very different from each other. When I first raptured my achilles tendon, it hurt so much, after surgery, felt pain for the first week or so, then after the 4th week calf pain started and lasted for about 2 weeks. I was put in splint for 3 weeks, then different spilt for 2 weeks, then 2-3 weeks I was using boots. I got my pt appointed around after 5th week, then next 3 weeks (8 week post op) I could barely walk because my foot was still in plantar flexion. I spent many days in pt to get fully recovered. Now, my second injury is very different. After 13 days since po, my doctor put me in a boot with only one heel wedge wight of 1.5cm, then after 5 days he took off the wedge. Now, 3 and half weeks after PO, I am in neutral position, and my foot can even go up further /dorsi flexion/ maybe 10 degree or more, which I dont know if its good idea or not. Starting from the injury date until now, there have been no pain at all. I took pain killers for the first 4 5 days. Even if I stretch my foot, I dont feel pain /if I try to stand on my injured toe, it hurst/. I started PT 15days after surgery because doctor said that my injury looks good that I can start PT soon, since then everyday I go to PT /exercises, stretching, laser therapy, sound therapy/. Now I dont have any pain, any swelling, I can even walk without crutches, without boot, my calf muscles feels much stronger comparing to my previous injury. I dont know if this approach to my injury is correct one or not. However, I have red that dorsi flexion exercise before week 8 is not recommended. Alexa, when did you started doing dorsi flexion exercises? P.S. Sorry for my english
@HelloImAlexa
@HelloImAlexa Жыл бұрын
Hi there! Thanks for sharing your story. The timeline of your second injury sounds a lot more inline with my recovery as well actually. I believe this more aggressive approach of early weight bearing and exercise is what is recommended now with more recent research and studies on achilles tendon rupture. I wouldn't be worried and would definitely make sure to keep doing what your doctor is recommending since they have your best interest at heart and know your injury best. Hope that helps!

Hope that's helpful and good luck at the appointment today!

I did get the stitches out and things have been going really well, but I do have a question related to a “4th type of pain” and if you ever experienced it: I started PT last Monday and on Wednesday they started stretching my Achilles which really hurts! They said anything up to 5 out of 10 on the pain scale is normal while they’re stretching it. Did you have a similar experience and if so how long did it take for that to not be as bad? Definitely the most painful part of recovery for me so far. Congratulations on your recovery and wedding, and thanks again for these videos and your willingness to answer questions!!

@@rpellico you're so welcome!! Let's see… I didn't start PT until 8 weeks post-op; is that similar or different for you? because your case may differ if you are going earlier than I did. I felt a lot of pain during PT esp. during my 3rd month (so about 8-13 week-ish). I was learning to walk this time and my leg was very stiff. After i got through that time, I've made really significant strides when it comes to pain. It gets better! Hope that helps.
@rpellico
@rpellico Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Ok yes that is pretty different, I started PT at like 2.5 weeks post-op and am basically at full weight-bearing in the boot now at 3.5 weeks post-op. I still have the heel lifts in and will get 1 out at 5 weeks and the other at 6. They are basically just stretching me to neutral right now which is what hurts so much but I’m guessing they will keep stretching further and further as the weeks go on.. looking forward to when it starts getting better!

@@rpellico yeahhh so interesting learning about the different protocols! I'd predict the pain will still persist for a while but it may eb and flow depending on how much work you're doing to stretch it and work with PT to strengthen, etc. Wish I could offer more insight here

Hi Alexa. Thank you for sharing. I’m two weeks post op. questions for you. Did you use any moisturizer or ointment for the wound after the stitch removal? And have you been sleeping with boots?
@HelloImAlexa
@HelloImAlexa Жыл бұрын
Hello! I did not use anything for the wound/stitches afterward. I am considering doing something now since my scare has gotten a bit bulkier than I'd like (I think) due to being pregnant. And when I was in my boot between 1-7 weeks post-op I was in my boot 24/7 and the only time I took it off was to shower and do exercises. So yes, very important to keep it on while sleeping.

Hi Alexa, Thank you so much for this video series I just discovered. I tore my right Achilles at tennis state championships (I was winning 😭). I’m 19 days post op. and now in my boot with stitches out. Healing is going well but I’m still getting so swollen and my foot and toes turn Red and purple abs are constantly cold. Did you experience this? Also, my pain travels up the sides of my calf Muscle and my calf feels Very sore, almost as if I just worked out Very hard. Any tips on helping with calf pain? Did you ever try driving left footed? I think not being able to drive is the worst part right now. Thanks again for such a helpful And positive video. I needed that!

Awe danggg, what timing 😣 It's been a while since I recovered so I don't remember some of these details so sorry. I don't quite remember my toes being cold. I wore a sock at all times under my boot.I also live in San Diego and it's typically pretty nice weather so maybe that helped? I don't remember by calf feeling sore until I started PT and then everything was sore. I'd imagine Tylenol and ice would help! I think driving left footed sounds super dangerous and the boot is pretty big and bulky. No being able to drive was super tough. I got a knee scooter which did help me feel more like I was able to get up and about a bit more. Hope some of that is helpful! Glad the videos have been helpful for you. Wishing you a smooth recovery 💪

@HelloImAlexa
@HelloImAlexa Жыл бұрын
I was told to wear the boot 24/7 unless I was showering or doing exercises. I'd recommend asking your doctor but I believe they will say yes. Your leg is positioned that way for healing and so the tendon can reconnect properly. Good luck!

Hey, I am 6 days post op, I have been in a World of pain so tried to stay on top of my pain meds, I decided to stop taking them yesterday as the liquid morphine made me quite unwell. I was offered the scooter but declined, seeing you use it though I'm going to see if I can grab it off the hospital now. I had to take my boot off today just to try and make it more comfortable/readjust to put back on and noticed quite a lot of dried blood in the area of my heel/tendon.. Is this what your bandage was like when you first released from the boot please? Thanks LJ

Awe dang… sorry to hear you've been in so much pain 😣 I really did love and use the knee scooter a lot so hopefully you can get your hands on one! I recommend when using it to def go slowly with it to get comfortable and be careful not to fall. My wound did look like it had some dried blood around it and near the stitches. Not sure it was A LOT per se but it was definitely red. I believe I have one video where I show a shot from when the doctors took my splint off and/or before they took out the stitches. Hope that's helpful!

It´s mindblowing and at the same time annoying for me how in my country the treatment is: after my achilles tendon surgery first check and removing hard cast by a doctor will be in 24 days. Yours was after 8 days. After I´ve ruptured my achilles tendon, trauma doctor said to me, there is nothing broken. She wanted to give me a cast and after 3 days I´ve supposed to check at my practicionist. I raised a voice at her that I´ve torn a part either tendon or some muscle and I demanded for proper doctor that will check my injury and I was right they called proper doctor and he straight away told me I need surgery. Crazy. I´m 2 weeks after surgery right now.

I just hit 3 weeks post-op and tried some "windshield wiper" range of motion exercises with my boot off. I had been pain-free for a couple of weeks.... but the range of motion exercise.. whoa. It's like all the nerves in my ankle, heel, and lower achilles tendon just woke up. And these nerves... they are not morning people.

Ahhh I definitely can't provide you with any sort of useful medical advice, esp. without knowing more about what's going on with your injury. All I know is my achilles was fully ruptured and therefore I couldn't walk on my leg anymore without the boot and without wobbling around. Long term effects without getting your achilles fixed properly (surgical or non-surgical) would probably mean never walking or running again. Wishing you the best!
