Well, I played basketball every day in my 20s and 30s ... but I waited until two weeks ago (at age 66) to tear my Achilles. Having been severely injured in the military many years ago, the recovery timeline for this doesn't necessarily frighten me. But I am concerned about not being able to heal properly at my age. I just got my cast off and stitches out today, 13 days after surgery, and I am shocked at how much the calf muscle looks atrophied already.

Alexa, I find your Achilles videos very helpful, I am mapping your experiences and timeline to mine. Currently, I am on week 3 post surgery and feel I am a little behind you. Mostly since my rupture the two ends were shredded and thus maybe a little more involved to repair. I truly appreciate hearing your journey. My best!

These videos are so helpful, thank you for creating all of them! I’m 8 days post-op and go in 6 days to go from cast to boot. The cast has been SO heavy and uncomfortable, does the boot feel more comfortable? I am just curious if the boot will be as uncomfortable when I am not elevated as this heavy cast is. Thanks!

I'm 49 and having surgery on July 3rd, and I'm nervous about having my surgery. I've been told 8 weeks of non-weight bearing. I hope I don't fall using the scooter. 😅😅

I'm 66. I had my achilles surgery on July 3 as well. My cast will come off on the 19th. I have been told I will be weight-bearing within a week or so of going to the boot. But no strenuous activity of course. I guess it all depends on the degree of the rupture, the difficulty of the surgery. I am worried that at my age, healing will take a lot longer. I guess I'll just have to see.

It's been 3 weeks since the operation. The first day after the operation I returned to work, I'm a beautician. After 7 days I stopped walking on crutches because it was impossible for me to work with them. I'm afraid that my tendon will stretch too much and thus lose its function. I have a tecar therapy machine in my salon and I use it every 2-3 days. I had an ultrasound a few days ago. The doctor says that the tendon is healing very well. I dance on the pole and I can't wait to go back to training and wearing heels. The doctor says that I will return to training in 3 months. Do you think it is possible?
@HelloImAlexa
@HelloImAlexa 6 күн бұрын
3 months post-op seems a bit early to me for wearing heals but if your doctor approves it that's great, they are the expert. Around 5 months post-op was when my wedding was and I think I could have wore heals if I wanted but I was more comfortable in flats so I stuck with that.

I had surgery two days ago. Glad I found your channel. It’s nice to “commiserate” with others! I had the speed bridge repair plus my Haglund’s deformity was removed and they did Gastroc recession also. I was offered a nerve block but declined. I am taking Hydrocodone 3 x per day every six hours. So far I am doing well. I have a knee scooter which is so helpful with getting around my apartment.

My plan is to get back into it again though!

I really appreciate you documenting and sharing your journey through this. It’s been very helpful. I’m in the first week of post op of a full achilles tear repair (day 6). My doctor was pretty adamant that I keep my foot elevated (23 hrs/day) for the first week. Plan to drop it to 12 after tomorrow. I don’t get the splint off for another 12 days😢. The hardest part so far about this injury is NOTHING comes fast. Every little milestone seems to take a long time to hit. Ooh and sleeping…😵‍💫

Keep hanging in there. I'm 12 days in, since I was casted (non surgery) and I'm praying to God I heal quickly and soundly. Thanks for sharing... I just had achilles repair and removal of a heel spur (that was causing the damage to my achilles) just over two weeks ago. For me, after the splint, they put me in a non-weight bearing cast that I'll wear for 6 weeks, then I go into a weight bearing cast for another 6 weeks (!), then a walking boot and PT. So I am in for it! I suspect because my injury was more a long-term stress thing then a sudden tear makes a lot of difference for how long I have to be in the cast. I was jealous of you getting to wash your let so soon after, haha! Happy you are making a full recovery!

Hi Alexa, Thanks so much for your videos. They have been so helpful both practically but more in terms of keeping hops up of returning to things I enjoy! I have probably missed it, but a quick practical question: At what point did you start feeling comfortable standing in a shower without boot or support or chair. The question is mostly around fear / headspace rather than mechanics. Cheers and thanks
@HelloImAlexa
@HelloImAlexa 6 күн бұрын
You're so welcome and I'm glad they have been helpful! I know you posted this a while so not sure if your question is still relevant. I don't quite remember tbh but my best guess is around 10 week post-op or so. Knowing I was out of my boot at 7 weeks post-op and starting PT twice a day starting around 8 weeks -- I could imagine feeling more comfortable standing in the shower around then. I was always careful though - hope that helps!
@SteveH759
@SteveH759 5 күн бұрын
@@HelloImAlexa Thanks Alexa, it is still relevant! Have another couple of weeks before the last wedge is out of boot at around 10 weeks, and will hopefully be allowed to begin some PT then too. So its a bit behind your timeline, but my ortho seems to really want to take things slowly. Makes sense to have been standing and walking out of boot confidently for a couple of weeks before venturing into the "terrors" of standing boot free in a shower! Thanks again.

Congratulations on being a mum and thanks so much for making this videos. I’m on day 5th since my Achilles tore, I have a cast and I have been told that it’s my choice whether to go through surgery or not. I’m very confused and don’t know what would be best. I’ve heard that the chances of this happening again are less if you get the surgery and also that both paths will heal equally (Achilles strength ) but non surgical will take longer. What did you doctor said about that? Thanks so much !!!!
@HelloImAlexa

Thank you!! I decided to get surgery because it was and still my intention to stay active and get back into playing basketball again (once I am no longer having kids). From what I remember hearing, it's more recommended to get the surgery if you are younger and want to get back into the same level of physical fitness -- but reminder, I am not a doctor and I am not referencing any data in this share. I personally didnt think twice about this and went the surgical route which is what my friend in ortho and doctor recommended.
