Have you felted something before? My only rule is move it as minimally as possible while it's hot. It is extremely rare for me to get real felting. Once in a while, I get a little of of compacting on the tips.

Hi Trish! I have to say I really admired how precisely John sprinkled the dye on the fiber, he did it so perfectly! And the colors for all of them are just lovely! I am curious though, how do you decide on which technique to use? And do you have to use different types of dyes for the various techniques? Did you heat set all of them? Including the ice-dyed fiber? Sorry for all the questions but watching you dye all that fiber is so fascinating and I keep wishing I had enough time to spin and weave every single one of them!
@FiberLoveDiary3 жыл бұрын
Gosh, don't apologize for all the questions! I will add them all to Tuesday's QnA. I use the same dyes for all the techniques. If the fiber was different, I would have to use different dyes.

@sleepydrJ3 жыл бұрын
Your videos are beautiful and so full of stuff to learn! *I miss you telling which dye colors you use. Knowing their names helps understand how they will behave in the process- both by how they mix with others, and whether they are a really slow strike. *Loved the method you used on the paradise! * I’m sure your dyed fiber drafts beautifully since you seem to be in the “no touching” method. Do you find sections of white inside? How to avoid a dark “shell” of color on outside?
@FiberLoveDiary3 жыл бұрын
I will probably add colors again. There were just so so many in this video. I had to cut it down already. And I do occasionally get small amount of lighter color and white. I like them because they add heathery colors to my spinning, so I don't try to avoid them. If you don't want them, you can sort of spread open the top before you as color and/or heat.
@sleepydrJ3 жыл бұрын
@@FiberLoveDiary Yes, I agree- having a certain amount of white inside really adds variety and depth to the final yarn! My problem (as new dyer) is that there is a fine line between moving/spreading fiber to allow penetration, and a sort of very very mild clinging/felting on the outermost edges, causing enough micro neps to be noticible in a finer yarn, but not in thicker spins.

so much info in this video, my fear in dying my light color rovings is that it will, (words - not completely felt) matte (?) and be harder to spin. I found that a problem in a braid my son bought for me. Anything to make that not happen during the dying process or just something that can happen anyway?
@FiberLoveDiary3 жыл бұрын
Do not move it while it's hot, like not at all if you are afraid of felting or matting. I set it aside to cool to room temperature and even try to match my rinse temp as much as I can. Patience is the best advice. It's so hard sometimes not to rinse it right away!
