I made a claim in 2017 for Gerd and I was denied. My symptoms started back in 1992. In January 2016 I was admitted due to upper GI bleed/ acute blood loss/ Mallory Weiss tear, Also a large hiatal hernia which now reflects Gerd. In 2002, the same symptoms from my 2016 hospital visit. Throwing up blood. Blood in the stool/ rectal bleeding. This time I sent them my 2016 Hospital records. They called me in for a C&P which went fast. Some questions about dysphasia . I had 2 endoscopy’s and was given 10%, but that is why they reached out to me because they never received my 2016 records. I am still waiting for their decision, but I am not holding my breath. Two hospitalizations and high medical expenses. We will see. Thank you for all this information!

Hello Leah and thank you for the infor and the presentations. Ok 26 yr USAF veteran, Retired 1988. I have 4 claims pending but nothing approved. Have comments in my STL for check pressure, sour taste after eating, maybe reflux. I have a private doc that has diagnosed me with Barrett's. Of course, lots of mil and civilian use of NSAIDs. So, do I tey GERD as a stand alone or do I try to make it a secondary?

That is really tough to say sir. From my perspective I always include all of the pertinent information. I may say something began in service and is also related to xyz I hope that makes sense. I believe there is a way to file it that way but you would want to discuss that with a legal professional. Thank you for watching sir

Former navy,water on the ship was often contaminated with petroleum. Had appendectomy shortly after getting out and gallbladder a couple years later. Have you ever heard of a case related to water contaminated on the ship related or causing GERD. Asked on my former ships Facebook page and had over 70 responses in one day many saying the had digestive tract issues they think due to the water on the ship. Thanks

Same issue with me. I got out in 2009 and served on an aircraft carrier for 5 years. Water was always contaminated with JP5 fuel or other types of fuels especially underway. After 7 years of being out, i had a gallbladder surgery. I think a lot of Sailors have this issue but are having a hard time to service connect.

I don't think so sir but anything is possible. Often people with diabetes have something called diabetic gastroparesis which can have some overlap of symptoms with GERD

Hi Leah, great video as usual! Can the prescription medication be out-the-counter medication bought directly by the veteran (Walgreens, CVS, etc) and not directly connected to medication prescribed by the VA 'in consistency' in order to have a strong secondary case from a "headaches" pending claim? *I think I can connect plenty of issues, but the attorney wants to go 1 claim at a time to simplify, so thinking between Gerd or Sleep Apnea next and doing my research everywhere.

Hi sir many veterans manage their symptoms with over the counter medications and that should not negatively impact you. That does not mean the person interpreting your files won't draw issue with it but they should not

Hi, I want to know what is a "diagnosis" of GERD? MY PCP gives me an Rx for Omeprazole and the bottle says for "Gastro-Esophogeal Reflux". It doesn't say "Disease" nor has their been any official labelling in my record calling it GERD. Thank you!

I'm on the same medication for the gerd acid reflux the flight that separates your stomach from your esophagus. The flap that separates the stomach acid from your esophagus I don't have I'm constantly spitting up paste and whatever I drink or eat most of the time comes back up I got medical conditions from ground zero verified by Mount Sinai from being on the world trade center 911 the medicine that you're taking is for your acid reflux I want to say medicine for the past 25 years

I have heart burn, shoulder pain in right shoulder, diarrhea ect.. but hope the doc is a smart one. They are paid by VA so I know they will try to discredit me

Many people are service connected for GERD related to depression. It just depends on the specifics of your case

Does anyone have a successful reply to VBA docs who deny because the vets claim is patho physiology or in other words not conclusive. My doc’s Nexus letters state there is a relationship or connection between GI issues and combat stress NOT a cause.

The VBA doctors do not deny the claims. They provide an opinion but it is up to the raters/adjudicators based upon their review of the evidence to include your doctors letter. Have you followed up with a legal professional on this?

A doctor I know had this comment: Pathophysioloogy is the study of abnormal changes in body functions that trigger disease processes. Metanalysis is the combination of multiple research findings into a larger summary finding. This is different than a single focused research finding but often more powerful and insightful. A denial of your claim on this basis alone is bogus. Get a highly regarded expert to validate your claim.
