I study herbalism; I’ve been using slippery elm for my small dog for years when needed. I buy the dried powder herb in bulk, make a gruel with a tsp of powder & 1/4 cup of water, heated on the stove, stirring constantly while it turns into a gruel the consistency of honey or thick gravy, let it cool, give it to her in a syringe, 1-2 teaspoons a few times a day. It helps with vomiting, diarrhea or constipation. I think when they’ve been vomiting it’s a better option than making them swallow a capsule or tablet. It tastes good so they don’t mind. It can also be added to water or food.

Baby blue I am so sorry. I have had alot of upset stomach & bowel issues- I take slippery elm in powder form with 8oz water 1st thing in am or last thing at nite and not with other meds. It gets a bit slimey but has a pleasant taste. Also prepared foods can have chemicals, dyes, corn syrup & seed oils so make your own home made bland foods at home- banana, white rice, applesauce, organic toast, scrambled eggs in small amts- for a couple days. Pedialite for hydration. Best wishes.

Alittle over a year ago my little rescue chihuahua shihtzu mix developed the symptoms you just described....she retches and will stretch out and may vomit and she won't eat or take the pepcid. She had abdominal films, an abdominal ultrasound and the vet said he would diagnose her with IBD. Went to the Animal Medical Ctr in NYC and she was seen by a vet who focuses more on GI issues and she had an endoscopy with a few biopsies done.....showed gastritis, inflammatory changes in her small intestines and acid reflux. They put her on pepcid 2 x daily and decreasing dose of prednisone (not happy) and wanted to keep slowly reducing it but if it gets too low she'll start having episodes again. They also have her on 1/4 of a carafate + water every 8 hrs. When she does, it starts in the morning, she won't eat and she'll be miserable, tired all day. So she was also put on a liquid anti-nausea med 1 x daily when an episode is starting up ( which helps alot), and dietary changes and completely cut chicken out of her diet. I tried the novel proteins but neither of my dogs liked them so I have her on an anti-allergy rotation diet. Now she developed a brown tear stained face. I am looking for an integrative vet here in the NYC and northern NJ area. Not that easy to find :( Any suggestions for treatment for chron's disease. She now can go 4 mos. without an episode....most of the time. Inbetween, she can be very feisty, peppy and hungry. I really would hope to stop the lo dose of her prednisone....but if I keep her on everything and time it carefully, she does ok. But I know these meds are covering up the real problems, that's why I want a holistic/integrative vet to see her. Thank you for all the information you give us, it's so important. And love your 🐕 dogs.

@ Susan Murrell I don't know anything about canine health but I've been going to my holistic vet for 39years( actually longer when he was only a veterinary practitioner)and know he has treated hundreds, probably thousands of dogs with the exact same digestive issues as your sweet dog. You dog will still require a work up to some degree, depending upon the records you bring to your new holistic/integrative vet. He/ she will probably require their own labs as their approach is quite different and to start off with fresh results. Holistic/integrative veterinary medicine combines the best of alternative and conventional therapies for the individual pet. I can tell you without hesitation, that when circumstances call for, he refers his patients out when the need is deemed necessary. A smart vet and one that has your pet's and your's best interests at heart will do that. He started out in traditional/ conventional veterinary medicine before I met him. He has a very long career behind him. Keep searching the AHVMA site for holistic vets. You may to do a bit of traveling when you find one. Let me make one thing clear... there is no such thing as a vet who practices homeopathic remedies ONLY. Only holistic vets who integrate into homeopathic remedies into their practice along with other therapies/modalities/treatment plans. Occasionally the traditional/conventional/western medicine vets will give you some of the remedies like Dr.Andrew, such as the use of famotidine, which is more up their alley, but even that's rare, as they will usually try to give you a prescription instead. Some are just now becoming more open to agreement in letting their patients use it over the counter and split their own tablets. 🙄(This of course depends upon pet's illness and what med it actually calls for) One weekend when I called my vet at home, he actually did ask me if I had ever tried famotidine before for my cats after vomiting spells for hairballs that left them nauseous and inappetant! Bring him in if not better in 48 hours. Holistic medicine takes into account your pet as a whole. Not just "here's a stomach issues, take this medicine". It looks at the whole picture...genetics, home environment, stress factors, diet, What's going at home (relationships) exposure to possible toxins and medical history to name the biggest ones I can think of. It may seem like a lot to weed through, but it's necessary and once again, your pet is treated as a whole. As a person who has been going to a holistic vet for 39years, I can vouch for only the best care and respect of my cat's lives. Every time I present with a new problem, I must answer some, if not all of these questions to help to root of the problem sooner. I'm used to this, so I'm well prepared and know the drill. I will also say that I was patient of his well before he began practicing holistic medicine, so I've been on both sides. My cats were some of the first patients he treated holisticly. Not all patients were. Needless to say, he's been in practice for many years but still continues his education in all fields of alternative medicine. Please keep looking for your holistic vet on the AHVMA site. I have met people who have found their holistic vet but indeed did need to a little traveling. Maybe a few hours. If my memory serves me right, there were teleconference(are they called zoom calls now? I used to call them face time calls for updates after visits for some. IBD,Crohn's,chronic constipation/obstipation,and other digestive diseases are not only hard on our pets, but equally stressful on the owner. Chronic pet illness is all consuming. I wish you the very best luck and hang in there. If you can find your vet, I think you'll be on your road to recovery. Much love ❤
@feedwinnie3 жыл бұрын
@ Susan Murrell I did a quick search on AHVMA's site... There are 57 holistic vets in NY alone. One in NYC.(I didn't verify this vet's current account or information, you'll have to do that for yourself if you don't mind please, I'm just trying to help you get started. 😊) In NJ there are 18. I sincerely hope that gives you some help in your search.😉

@@pawsup_n_boops Titres aren't supported here in Texas either. Very few states do but there's a movement to get titre testing made into law across the country, headed by Dr. John Robb. You can Google him of course, but he's also found on Facebook where he holds live updates on proceedings and what is happening. He used to own a Banfield Hospital and refused to vaccinate his patients with all the same dose, no matter what size they were, not giving the same amount of vaccine to an 8 lb dog as you would a 75 lb dog, etc. And only healthy pets should ever be vaccinated, never chronically ill ones. Dr Jones, thank you for sharing free information/knowledge to help us better manage our pets health. I watch your videos about cats and follow your advices successfully. I noticed you only have a youtube video about Acid Reflux in Dogs (not cats). Does the same apply to cats? After ruling out other diseases, my 4-year old male scottish fold cat seems to have chorinic GERD. He's shown behavioral symptoms such as restlessness, licking mouth, licking paws (not like grooming but to self-sooth the discomfort), visible difficulty/heavy swallowing, stretching neck out to try to swallow, vomitting of yellow bile or clear white foam whenever he goes 6-8+ hours without food, doesn't like his mouth opened. He did dental cleaning recently and seems to have mild gingivitus but not so much that would cause him the symptoms mentioned so the vet said possible due to Acid Reflux. The doctor prescribed Famotidine 20mg tablet to administer 1/4 tablet once daily for 16 days. This will be his first time taking the tablet and I'm reading plentiful before using it to be super cautious it doesn't cause him other health issues. Are you considering making a video for GERD in cats? I saw 2 of your videos about how to treat Vomiting in Cats and seems almost the same remedies are suggested. Any tip on how to handle GERD in my furry angel would be immensly appreciated. Thank you for caring❤

Oh, and just a quick note for humans but I don't recommend it for animals as I have zero knowledge about safety issues; mastic gum from Greece helps with H pylori issues. It takes a bit of getting used to but it does a great job of helping to decrease the bad bacteria. Also good for dental bacteria. Healthy people have the energy needed to take good care of their animals!

@iwona46853 жыл бұрын
Terry henry cream cheese worked best for my yorkie. It coats the pill well. Some dogs like peanut butter (no additives). I've given medicine that didn't smell or taste too strong with a little bit of food or disolved in a little bit of broth. It has to be something your dog likes, for example my dog didn't like peanut butter so that wouldn't work but he liked any kind of cheese, pieces of Turkey, homemade treats... But, be careful what kind of medicine you give, stick with natural remedies as much as possible.

I’m hazarding a guess that peppermint tea may also provide some relief, or chamomile with ginger (ginger is an excellent digestive aid). And, if your pooch isn’t lactose intolerant, a little drink of milk should also provide temporary relief (I used to chug milk when my digestive problems began). But what provided a huge amount of relief for me - and basically fixed my stomach problems, unless I’m super stressed and haven’t been looking after my diet - is probiotics. Maybe you could give your opinion of these other options, Doc 🙂😉❤️

Hi doc! How would you differentiate acid reflux vs IBD? My 4 lb 6 y/o tea cup yorkie has been having GI issues for the last 4 years. We’ve done many tests with no luck, we believe it might be either IBD or possibly acid reflux. She does lick the air A LOT and gets IBD symptoms if she doesn’t eat for too long. We’ve been managing it with a dose of Sucralfate twice daily with random episodes happening a few times a month. When she does get the episodes we give her about half a tablet, and that seems to help a few hours later but we are always looking for more natural solutions. She was eating The Farmers Dog fresh food for a while and then got tired of it, so we changed her to My Ollie fresh food, which she currently loves. Aside from that, she’s a very healthy, active and happy dog! Thank you for your help Doc!

I would absolutely love to see a response to this. This sounds like my 10yr old yorkiepoo! Sucralfate didn’t help much. She now eats raw rabbit food by Small Batch. She absolutely just have acid reflux by the licking, retching and this gulping sound that happens when swallowing, just to name a few. She eats 5 small meals a day , I feed by hand most days as it’s worse if she eats to fast, or I put it in a disk with tony divots to help with anxiety by licking more to get the food out of it. She slowly went from 8 hrs to 7 hours and now is at 6 hrs of the max amount of time between meals before her “IBS” symptoms kick in. Loss of appetite, nausea, grass eating, possible vomit which then leads to pancreatic flare symptoms. I’m sorry your pumpkin is going through this.

How is your puppy? My puppy has been having acid reflux for a month now and after so much vet bills they still don’t know they basically are just having me play with the dosage of Cisapride but he needs more protein and to gain more weight. I’m thinking of switching to a bland diet and just go from there. He is currently on puppy gi soft food but still regurgitating once a day

@Veterinary Secrets Dr Jones, what about baking soda? When my dog had mast cell cancer it would cause acid buildup and I would give him slippery elm, I didn't know chamomile had antacid properties, thank you... but I would give him baking soda dissolved in a little bit of maple syrup away from meals and that worked best. Word of caution when choosing otc products, make sure they don't have any additives. For example baby medicine often have sweeteners.

I love your videos Dr. Jones! I've been watching them for years and your natural advices are very helpful. But I have to say something about heartburn. I don't know about dogs but healthy hunan's stomach acid is the most acidic substance on planet (ph 3 -1) The acid reflux is actually a low acid and the sensor in the top of the stomach doesn't close the stomach because of higher ph and that is the reason of heartburn. So the real cure is lowering the ph not increasing. Antracit will give you short term relieve but long term the stomach acid will get weaker and weaker and that will impair the digestion and nutrients absorption

@@carriemartin4837 Dr Berg here on YT says to acidify the stomach ( e.g. apple cider vinegar) for the valve to close and stop the stomach acid from splashing up. Drinking right after meal is also a bad habit that increases the acid PH .

Not sure if this is correct. Acid reflex can be a sign of not enough acid in the stomach. It is in humans. So by taking anti acid you make the symptoms go away but condition gets worse. Could be the same with dogs, Doc. I’m giving my apple cider vinegar mixed in his water instead. The same thing I do for me. I use slippery elm too for my dog.

My dog has been licking a lot lately but never vomiting or regurgitating, today about 4 minutes after her second meal she ran up to me like she was scared and was gulping pretty hard for a few minutes and licking her mouth then it calmed down and started up again a couple of times but again nothing came out and she's eating, drinking, playing and passing her food just fine. I am thinking of giving her slippery elm but everything I see says to dump what's in the capsule in water and create a paste, your video is the only time I've seen someone say just put the capsule down their throat, is that still what you recommend?

my dog is 4lbs.. had a bone surgically removed from esophagus. She was always on hard food, now soft food in little meatballs. Vet is telling me esophageal dysphagia after a barium radiology study that showed no strictures or blockages. Im being told that food can collect in the esophagus while she is sleeping and she can wake up hours after she eats with the licking, gagging, retching, bringing up white spit and sounds like darth vader... I'm feeding her special prescription Royal Canin GI food, small portions, every 4-6 hours in little meatballs and holding her vertically after she eats.... She moreso has the issues in between meals, not during... How should I dose the Pepcid or the other with her small weight? I cannot put pills down her throat.. Can i mix it with her food while she eats, or does it need to be taken in between meals?
