Acids and Alkalines: How they can change Colours

In this workshop, Trudi explains how acids and alkalines can change colours in the textile natural dyeing processes. This works in immersion and solar dyeing as well as eco-printing. Trudi prefers to use potassium alum as her mordant of choice. It is safe and effective and enhances the original colour.
Mordants will be covered in more detail in subsequent workshops.

1:07 well, vinegar is nature. It's the action of microorganisms on alcohol. Basically, yeast makes alcohol out of something that can ferment, then some microorganisms make that alcohol turn bad by converting it into an acid.

It would be good to have mentioned briefly that she scoured and mordanted the cloth / wool first. Sunlight doesn't make any difference to dye colours

I loved your demonstration and creativity Trudi ; I would love to see what/how you make items with your beautiful fabrics. My mom would use veggies and charcoals to make her own make-up. Like beets for blush and lip color and charcoals for eye makeup and I wished I could of recorded her as she was also a wealth of knowledge and quite witty. I am inspired by your hobby and would love to combine the two as I love using plant based and no waste. Thank you for sharing!
