In the first episode of our brand-new mini-series Ruth Pt 1: Acknowledging Our Famines, Walking The Text founder Brad Gray reveals how the first five verses of Ruth are loaded with contextual information that lay a foundation for the rest of the story. Ruth is easily one of the most beautiful and moving stories in the entire Bible, but it doesn’t start that way.
In fact, Ruth begins in a time of darkness and death. The time of the Judges was a bloody and chaotic period in Israelite history, one that included a famine so severe, Naomi and her family were forced to relocate to enemy territory in order to survive. From Bethlehem (which means “House of Bread”), they could look across the Rift Valley to Moab and see that the grass was, in fact, greener on the other side.
Unfortunately, the move to Moab brought further disaster. Faced with the death of her husband, and two sons, and with no male heir to provide for her, Naomi is without hope. Before we can appreciate the beauty of the story of Ruth, we have to deal with the disappointment. By the end of Ruth Pt 1: Acknowledging Our Famines, you’ll see why acknowledging our experiences of loss and pain are so crucial to not being defined by them.
