"When you're creating your own fantasy world, why would you further perpetuate this negative, harmful stereotype of masculinity- that men have to be protective over women, or that they have to have some sort of ownership over women?" 👏👏👏👏 Aaaaand this is the reason I can't bring myself to read anything written by Sarah J. Maas. And frankly you SHOULD make a video just on this topic, that would be fantastic!
@angelicsugar98768 жыл бұрын
Shakespeare and Such This is strange to me. I've always love Sarah J Maas's books because she's so pro-feminist and her characters are as well. All the Females are super strong and most of the men (except for Tamlin but he's a tool and he's the only one) Are super feminist. Rowan and Rhysand. (I don't want to spoil anyone for ACOMAF). But I know she says how we shouldn't excuse it because they are Fae males. But It explains the history behind it and in every relationship she's created That I've read the guys lighten up. They know that the way they act isn't right and that their significant other handles themselves. There are a ton of situations I've read in her books that explain this. So I'm just wondering how far/how many books of here's you've read? Because if you've only read ACOTAR than I would highly recommend reading ACOMAF because it explains this very well.
@ShakespeareandSuch8 жыл бұрын
From what I understand ACOTAR does get better when you read the second book, I just hate having to slog through one book that annoys me to get to a really great one, if that makes sense? It's not any hate against her as an author, it's just not my cup of tea.
@angelicsugar98768 жыл бұрын
Oh well I think it's totally worth it to get to the second one. It's one of my favorite books of all time! At least ACOTAR is a quick read so if you do you won't have to go through it for long. :)
@paradiselostinbooks50768 жыл бұрын
Shakespeare and Such I totally agree with this sentiment but ACOTAR would probably surprise you--the first book seems like it's going to go in the direction you state but it all gets flipped around in ACOMAF :)
@kazm29788 жыл бұрын
You know, people always seem to say that ACOMAF is all feminist and everything, but Rhys is just as over protective and territorial than all the other love interests...idk, it bothers me so much that no one seems to see it

I agree with you on the book trope about the territorial male characters. And also even though I still really like Sarah J Maas's books I think that she has some issues that she could improve on. Also what's so weird to me is that even though she pushes a lot of feminist ideas in her books she still romanticizes these male possessive characters.
@lunaluna31287 жыл бұрын
I've just started reading Throne of Glass, and so far I'd have to agree. I also don't feel like I can connect with the main character, Celaena, at all.

If you want a cool YA trilogy without the focus being the romance arc I recommend the Chemical Garden Trilogy (the first book is called Wither). It has a LITERAL love triangle where the protagonist is kidnapped and forced to be a sister wife with two other women, but the romance angle is never pushed with her husband. She starts falling for a servant who is also falling for her, but he is practically an afterthought in the books. Her main goal is escape and finding her brother, and none of the guys (even the forced husband) ever push themselves on her. It is a HUGE expectation subversion when it comes to male/female dynamics. I hope I'm not hyping you up just to let you down with the series, but I honestly recommend it so hard!

Aria which ones did you read & which one was okay? When I read November 9 I LOVED IT, but everyone said it was extremely problematic (I see that now). But when I read Ugly Love, it was such a toxic relationship yet nobody talks about it. I want to get into her other books but I'm hesitant as to which ones perpetuate harmful topics now
@ariannaj57898 жыл бұрын
Kelsey Partridge I read Ugly Love, Too Late, and her latest release It Ends With Us. I agree with you on Ugly Love, I found the relationship in that book to be really toxic and the main character totally lacked agency when it came to the love interest. Too Late was a little better but it was a mess in my opinion and had a lot of dark and sensitive themes that weren't portrayed well, instalove, and the epilogues (there were two, didn't get the point of that) were totally cringy ruined the whole story for me. It Ends With Us is the only book of hers I enjoyed, it deals with abuse and toxic relationships, which is kind of ironic, considering that seems to be a theme that is romanticized often in her other books.
@kelseypartridge79098 жыл бұрын

I understand your opinion on the whole overprotective alpha male/territorial alpha males in books especially YA Fantasy. It's definitely become a popular trend for authors to use in their books. I usually read about these types of characters in the New Adult and Romance genre. As a reader who loves romance, I personally love the alpha male characters. But I do think is overused and can sometimes come off as abusive and controlling, which isn't attractive. I think putting a controlling male character in a YA books can easily give younger readers the wrong perception that it's okay for a guy to be overprotective and jealous if the girl even looks at another guy. So while I enjoy it in to romance books when not overdone, I don't feel like it should be used in the YA genre.

As far as a series everyone seems to love that I didn't, it had to be Throne of Glass for me. I just didn't buy Celaena as a badass assassin. I mean, we are TOLD over and over again that she's this cut-throat killer, but all we ever see her doing is eating cake and obsessing over what she is wearing. I also didn't like that the 'competition' to find the best baddie mostly happened off-page and what we do see is pretty lame...I mean really...an obstacle course? Anyway, I know I am very much in the minority on this one...oh well.

She's like aah I have a fight tomorrow, but I'm the best so I'm just going to try on a lot of dresses eat cake and do a lot of stupid things. I feel like what may have happened was Sarah J Maas and this may be kind of spoilly you've been warned! I feel like she was going to have Chaol be endgame but then Rowan this hot old gray haired fae animal popped into her head and as she was writing the third book she decided right in the middle of the third book right after she created such a beautiful friendship she decided "You know what change of plans I like Rowan much better then Chaol maybe Rowan and Aelin should actually be together!" "You know what yes yes they should in fact I'm going to make them mates so no one can question their relationship and say they shouldn't be a thing!" Even though in book five they say if mates can't physically hurt each other yet Rowan and Aelin have hit each other so many times! :l

I completely agree with your opinion about Rowan and Aelin. Rowan, I basically just hated as a character but Aelin I actually liked in the first 3 books as Celaena. Her personality completely changed and it took me a VERY long time to finish QoS. In addition, Choal's personality did as well, and I felt that SJM intentionally tried to make readers hate him. He was the most complex character and essentially just threw him to the side to make way for Rowan and Aelin. I still wish that Chaolena happened.

I agree with the relationship trope. I also hate when, in the same type of relationship that was spoken about, when the male is super dark and brooding and emotionally "damaged" and the female is the exact opposite, and swept off her feet by the male, even when he can be a jerk. Also that she can somehow "change" him into someone better, or when the relationship goes too fast. It feel impractical, demeaning, and overall ridiculous.

(I read these after they were all out, so I read them in order) Okay. I absolutely loved the first three TOG books (throne of glass, crown of midnight, and the assassins blade). Heir of fire was okay, queen of shadows was a hot mess, and empire of storms was so... infuriating. Like oh no, you better stop erwan, but don’t forget about Maeve, she’s a minor character that turns huge. Then the last book came out, and........what? There’s so many different views that no one knows what the heck is going on. Then the whole thing felt rushed and it was so confusing. Then absolutely no one died that we cared about, except a certain group of people who you’ll know if you read it. Then everyone else got out safe and all the couples were happy. Yay. The only people I liked were Nesryn and her boyfriend (I forgot his name). They are just happy together and neither of them are overly territorial. And they don’t freakin lie to each other all the time. And that’s the tea sis.

Yesss! XD Aelin is so insufferable. I wanted to puke during the certain scenes between Rowan and Aelin. You know what I'm talking 'bout. Ick. I get that we're not supposed to love every main female character, at least that's what I convinced myself when I read TOG, but Aelin never gets better imo. She is just a complete a-hole to the bone and the world bends around her to make everyone fall in love with her and give her a position as being the most powerful and beautiful person that has ever set foot on earth. I don't care how many times people shove the 'strong female' line down my throat, she's at Kanye West's level of meglomania. I just want her to get killed off in the last book but I have a feeling she'll probably end up as the ultimate perfect, most powerful goddess of the universe or something. At this point I'm just reading for laughs, and because I stupidly bought all of the books before reading because the first three were on sale.

I think I might read some of her books in the future after cutting down on the list of books that I want to finish. I know her writing has grown since then, and I'm willing to give her books another try.

To be honest I really liked Rowan and Aelin in Queen of Shadows (even though I was still rooting for Chaol), but in Empire of Storms I ended up really disliking their relationship. Really interesting to hear that you don't like Julian, because that's not something I've really heard before!
@alilbitmads8 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with what you said about Julian. He just seemed to be losing it a little bit in Lady Midnight and that's not a great sign. I'm thinking Cassandra Clare will use it as plot points in the coming books so hopefully he will have a chance to grow.

I can kind of see what you are saying about Julian but he did go through a lot of bad stuff and having to raise four kids as a twelve year old boy will take a toll on you. And he’s in love with a person that he shouldn’t be. But I do understand you’re opinion haha 🤣☺️

I definitely agree with your comment on Rowan/Aelin, especially in Empire of Storms. I liked them in Queen of Shadows but I felt like their individual character and relationship was completely off in EoS. I miss the days when Nehemia was there to bring Celaena to her senses!

I love your videos, you always have a lot of great opinions, especially on over-used tropes - I share so many of your thoughts on that! Do you think you'd like to make a video of, like: how to write a likeable female protagonist? Or what your ideal female protagonist would be/act like? Would love your thoughts!

Just wanted to say thank you for all the videos you've made! I stumbled upon your channel a year ago and have been enjoying your videos ever since. Even though I love reading I don't really watch booktubers, but we share a lot of opinions and your voice is very pleasant to listen to (I'm sorry if that sounds weird haha). I think that you've grown a lot as a creator over the past year,

Great video! I love this tag. It always bring so many interesting and different opinions. For me it's Shatter Me and Across the universe series. I have a lot of problems with both of them. I also probably won't finish the Mortal instruments series. I've read the 5 books, yeah, but I was so mad after finishing the 5th one that I nearly threw it out of the window. Clary is one of the characters that I almost hate. So I don't want to struggle because of her any longer. Oh, and Throne of Glass... I've only read the 1st book and hearing where it went now, I'm glad I haven't continued. oh, I can rant a lot. I'll stop for now. Thanks for this video!:)

I really appreciate your honesty as always. I've been trying lots of books because of booktube and I have many unpopular opinions. Some series I did not like at all were: Winner's Curse, Raven Boys, A Gathering of Shadows and Six of Crows

I'd love to see another Book Tropes video! I haven't read much fantasy this year but that trope seems very annoying. I guess my answer to #1 for a recentish read would be We Were Liars. I just didn't get the hype and kind of hated all the characters, didn't like the writing or the plot really.

Great video! I totally agree about territorial male trope - why do authors even think that is a good idea? It is not part of a healthy relationship! In terms of science fiction I highly recommend the Old Mans War series by John Scalzi, as well as Fuzzy Nation also by John Scalzi. I also highly recommend Dune by Frank Herbert and The Hunted Assassin by Paul B Kohler. Hope you are having a great day!

I am so glad you mentioned Rowan and Aelins flaws. Rowan is too severe and quite frankly whipped beyond all measures and has given up all previous personality traits that made him.. him? Like how did he all of a sudden become a "fragile" heart after literally centuries of being so emotionally unmoving.... Aelin is similar in that she is so disrespectful and unlikeable in the latest book and treats everyone horribly. Her character advancement is completely unrecognizable. AND she refuses to admit her faults! Mix both crazy, controlling characters together and you get... a horrible relationship. I am the same way with the Mortal Instruments as well! I read it when I was younger and loved it and now I'm terrified to reread in fear I would ruin the image I have of it.

These are my exact thoughts on both The Mortal Instruments/Shadowhunter Chronicles and CelaenaxRowan. I also read TMI in middle school, quickly became obsessed, and have continued to read all of CC's books eight years later. I realise now that they're not written well, are not at all creative, and are most likely plagiarised but despite all that, I still can't shake them. Every time I read the latest book it brings me right back to being thirteen and I feel nostalgic for weeks after. I'm almost embarrassed to still be reading books that I've accepted are pretty bad and trashy but they've been part of my life for so long now that I don't think I'll ever be able to stop loving them. As for Celaena and Rowan... no chemistry, no clues that they were going to be together before BAM they were, and no real reason to be together at all in my opinion. I thought the relationships in the first TOG were pretty natural but every single one in EOS felt painfully contrived and forced. It's like Sarah J Maas decided that no character of hers would be single for more than a month and then spun a wheel to see who'd end up with who.

My favourite Clare's character will always be will herondale. I thought jace was my favourite but I liked Simon more in TMI and when I read TID I fell head over heels for will herondale. PS. I might not read TID again because of the epilogue

Hmm. I definitely see where you're coming from when you describe Julian as territorial cause while it didn't bother me as much as it for you, it was freaking ridiculous at times. I personally like him as a character cause he's different from all the other male protagonists we've had in previous books and he's intense in a scary way... Lol. He in general has a lot of potential.

I nodded my head so much when you talked about Rowan and Aelin and the territorial bf trope it physically hurt. I don't agree with all of these but it's nice to see how you give reasons for your opinions. I've never seen anyone talk about the Gone series by Michael Grant anywhere. I started reading it years ago and reread/finished it last year (which is why I stuck to reading it in Norwegian. My friend said the Norwegian version had a ton of typos, but I didn't even notice.). I loved it so much. I felt like the concept was so fascinating, original and terrifying in a way. I will say I do think it gets better as it goes on, but I loved the characters from book one, I loved the diversity of characters, and I was blown away by how disturbing and terrible everything got as the series progressed. I really wished more people talked about it, but apparently it's bad or just really unpopular. What a shame ):

thank you so much for articulating my dislike of aelin/rowan. i can't stand their relationship at all. they would've been much better as friends. after reading heir of fire and seeing how rowan spoke to aelin/beat the crap out of her, i can't understand how people adore the ship so much but to each their own i guess

I agree with your comments on Julian. I didn’t necessarily hate Julian, but he didn’t really intrigue me the way Mark did or the way the other male characters did. I felt he was really just a more intense version of Edward: being territorial, being almost aggressive in protecting his family to the point where it’s actually harming them, and just being “too beaten and broken”. I honestly felt there was no development with him like there was with Emma which is what typically makes or breaks a character for me.

8:35 Actually, they're trying to sell more copies by introducing all those "strong female characters" that have male traits (they're basically men with boobs) and making the male characters look stupid ,so that the heroine can look better.
@bitterlyfun8 жыл бұрын
I agree with the trope you dislike, Beautiful Disaster and Fifty Shades of Grey were ones that ticked me off with this, especially when the female protagonist tries to prove she's independent and strong only to make excuses for these men in their lives and why they act like they do and do what they say when it is clearly a terrible relationship. The fact we romanticize it is terrible!
@LittleWhiteBookshelf8 жыл бұрын
For your tropes portion, I completely agree. A Court of Thorns and Roses and the sequel have a very territorial male, but that sets the plot for the sequel into motion and it is recognized as bad news, so I can get on board with it in that case.

I personally love Rowaelin. At first I thought Dorian and celaena seemed quite forced as a couple and was relieved when they fell apart but remained friends bc they are perfect as friends and I shipped Chaoleana sooooooo much in crown of midnight but after the second book I hated chaol and it was never the same. I shipped Sam and celaena as well in the assasins blade and Sam remains my favourite character from the series but rowaelin is perfect for me, not everyone needs to feel the same way I’m just expressing my opinion.

Julian Blackthorn definitely has an odd personality that makes it hard to like him, but at the same time he has some traits that remind me of my best friend and therefore, I really like him.
@baileydavidson30927 жыл бұрын
About the trope you mentioned, I think Tamlin in A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas is a prime example. However, that trait is massively important to the second book, and Maas, in my opinion, does a really great job of addressing it.
@sylla_headhunter47257 жыл бұрын
I also think that this trope is... well. Kinda accurate and it CAN be great. For instance, I would very much like my boyfriend to be a bit jealous about some things I do (or don't but COULD to, if you get what I mean xD) to "see if he cares about me". And YES, I know, you shouldn't test someone you love and I'm pretty sure I can say I wouldn't do it because of that but sometimes... I just want to be held and told that he loves me and won't let me go. I am that simple xD It can be portrayed REALLY bad (like Twilight.. I'm sorry, had to throw that in xD) but I actually like it in SJM's books. Well, I like her books but that's not the point! xD I mean... let's be real. Character who's name I won't say but we know who I mean in ACOMAF is also kinda overprotective but it's great (okay, he isn't as overp. as Rowan and not as... territorial, but still^^) 'cause he lets his girl be who she wants to be and talks with her about all this stuff. And Rowan... he and Aelin are not presented as "She's my bitch and I fuck her, so deal with it and get your hands off her, even though you're her cousin!!". That's just... not it in my humblest opinion. Yeah, he IS a bit like that but Aelin constantly mocks him for it and basically tells him to knock that shit off and they agree upon that... at least that's how I see it. And sorry for babbling so much, I hope, you don't mind it xD
