@Steph C Why should she not be considered a strong female just because she loves unconditionally? And she jumped off a cliff to see Edward, yes. Did she do it just because of that? No. She feels lost in her world, doesn't feel like she belongs. Because of Edward she finds where she belong, a world where she doesn't feel like she's stumbling through life anymore. So when she loses him, appart from losing the person she thought would be with her for the rest of her life, she loses her whole world again. She goes back to feeling like she doesn't belong.

@@steph2994 it's not even just Edward though (in reference to her cliff diving). She lost her best friend when Alice left too. It's like what she said here "This wasn't a choice between you and Jacob. This was a choice between who I should be and who I am. I've always felt out of step... I've never felt normal. I don't wanna be. I've faced death, and loss, and pain in your world, but I've also never felt stronger... like more real, more myself. Because it's my world too." So she seeks self empowerment and goes against the grain despite what might be ostensibly right, safe, for her. She's the epitome of heart vs head and she goes with heart which is admirable even if that isn't for everyone.

Maddie Lobdell she also loved Books. And she took care of her parents, often feeling like she was more the mother than her mom was. She had personalities and hobbies. But she was like 16 and in a new place she hated with no friends, then her life became a mess of vampires and werewolves. She knew what she wanted. Many people have goals of raising a family. I think people are too harsh on Bella’s character.

@@ashthebookbakery1785 Yup! Tho I personally could do without the "let us marry off the 19 year old and give her a baby" storyline. I still like Bella tho! I always read her as her own person. And I did not think she was bland. The books were cheesy and boy-crazy... but like? They were meant to be? It was a fantasy romance novel? Twilight did cheesy justice. Breaking Dawn was a struggle for me - I did not like it and where it took the story at all (the marriage + kids part). But I still love the characters.

Arunima Tiwari Agree on Breaking dawn! That book disappointed me. I remember when It got spoiled online pre-release and I thought it was fake cause that storyline was ridiculous. But yeah. It was supposed to be a cheesy vampire romance. It did its job. haha. And book Bella wasnt that bad. But Movie bella kind of ruined it for me. Yes Bella isnt an arrogant “I dont need anyone and can beat up everyone” female character like is popular in YA today but I thought she was a realistic love struck 16 year old girl. Sorry but most teens dont have strong personalities or know what they want in life in my opinion. Some due (or think they do) but She was pretty realistic for many teens I grew up with. lol.

@@ashthebookbakery1785 *WARNING!* A ridiculously long rant lies ahead, coming from nowhere and headed towards no sane direction. Proceed at your own risk. I feel like a lot of Twilight got twisted around to make the whole thing look bad. Extremely terrible. But it wasn't really that bad? It is really just another case of a mediocre piece of media getting way too popular resulting in backlash against it which is similarly passionate. That and people just cannot tolerate young women's interests in entertainment when it is cheesy. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Like you can argue up and down about how damaging the depiction of depression is in New Moon. That it is too extreme and Bella is too stupid. But kids are stupid lmao. And the way she copes with her depression by doing dangerous things is not depicted as a positive! Infact, for me the portrayal of sadness was so real in New Moon that I could never even properly read the chapters where she was depressed. It was just too real. I wish people back then talked about the actual damaging features of the books that I could not spot as a non-American. About how racist Meyer was, in appropriating and twisting the culture of the tribe she put her werewolf characters in. Or how the fact that Jasper was a Confederate soldier is discussed but slavery is never brought up? Criticism of Edward as a romantic lead is valid to me. But again, I always read him as a caricature (possessive, wants to take care of her in every way possible, is completely devoted to her to the point of lunacy - like every other dude in a Mills and Boons novel lmao) and did not take him as a guide of "My Boyfriend Must Be This". Give women some credit. I liked my romances creepy and obsessive, still do tbh, but I can also differentiate between fiction and reality. Ooh! And I do wish she had given Jacob an actual character arc and not made him violate Bella's consent just to make out with her. Twice! We have literally no mainstream native americans characters who are well known in media. Why did she do him like that... Infact everything about the werewolf clan in Breaking Dawn is ludicrous to me. Anyway. I now cope by going through headcanons Twilight fans on Tumblr come up with. The headcanons are hella gay and healthy and funny. They flesh out the frankly very interesting characters Meyer gave us (but did not do much with). You should check them out if you haven't. Okay. Rant over.

@@oof-rr5nf Twilight is one of the worst things I've ever read, and the only thing that springs to mind as worse is better written, but features some rather unfortunate rape scenes. It's not just mediocre, it's awful. It follows the motions of a romance story, but lack substance. It's not just cheesy. Cheese can be fun... if it's got heart. Twilight is heartless. "Boohoo my sort of boyfriend I barely know left me, and now I'm going to self-destructively mope about it forever. I will eventually start developing out of self-misery and pursue healthy relationships, but I will immediately ruin this with self-destructive behaviour because it induces weird memory/hallucinations of my long-gone sort-of-boyfriend." Of course that's not portrayed as positive. How could it be? You might make that into an interesting story about a teenager not coping with loss well, but this doesn't happen, instead it's validated by them getting back together, and everything being fine. It's not racist to twist a culture into a form that suits your narrative. Nobody with a functioning brain would claim it was. I'm also guaranteeing if it was a European culture being twisted you wouldn't blink an eye. Not addressing slavery makes sense. Why would a romance novel delve into slavery, just because it gave a character a backstory that they were a confederate soldier? Why is that what the book should focus on? If I mention the confederacy, should I now give a lecture on slavery and it's place in American history? Or maybe you just want some contrived self-righteous preaching about what the "correct" values to have are? Why is this channel infested with SJW nonsense? That blurb about Edward is just meaningless, as is everything thereafter. "He's a terrible boyfriend, and I like fiction that romanticizes terrible boyfriends, but I can differentiate fiction by reality, so gIvE wOmEn SoMe CrEdIt"

Honestly, as a huge fan of Cassandra Clare, I get why some people don't like her books. If I read TMI for the first time now, without being attached to any of the characters, I would hate it too. And I reread TID a while ago and found Tessa insufferable and I love her as an adult. But what I like about her books is how everything's entertwined, there are so many lovable characters, the worldbuilding is quite unique, I really enjoy her writing, she could literally write about a week in the lives of my favourite characters where nothing happens and I'd pay her for it. And I get that that's not for everyone because her books kind of rely on the love you have for the characters. Sure, you don't HAVE to have read every book and novella to to understand but I guess if you haven't, you won't understand why suddenly so many characters are appearing that our main characters already know or why they get engaged and married on page or what a lot of references are. You have to read everything to truly appreciate all the books, I assume. But what I absolutely cannot stand is that there are literal anti blogs out there, spreading lies about her being homophobic because she didn't give Malec focus in TMI when she literally tried and couldn't because it was 2007! And her books have gotten more inclusive and so much better over the years. Just look at the amount of queer people and queer people of colour in the newer books and novellas, you cannot claim she's homophobic. I just tried to write down all the representation we've gotten in Queen alone and it was so much, I couldn't even remember everything. Like, most authors will give you barely anything, maybe a queer side character or one queer couple if you're lucky but Cassandra Clare has given us so many happy queer characters, main queer characters, queer characters with a POV - hell, she created an entire bisexual species. You don't have to like her personality or her books but we should all appreciate that she's giving us the representation that especially the fantasy genre desperately needs.

This is super old, but I actually do have a problem with the way she wrote Alec and Magnus in TMI. I understand why their relationship was like 70% off page in the first trilogy (hello 2007), but in the latter half of the series they are written so badly because their storyline revolved around a supposed conflict that was in their relationship in the first trilogy. Alec's character arcs/development in the latter trilogy have no buildup whatsoever; he goes through breakneck personality changes every couple books, and his actions seem irrational because we aren't given any context to rectify his feelings in the first three books. Magnus also barely gets any depth until book 6. So yeah, I know that they were a big deal for representation back in the day, but I think it's weird that CC gets so much praise for Malec, even though Alec has to be the worst written main character in TMI I feel like she only went on to write Alec and Magnus so cool in later books to distract from how badly written they are in TMI. I also feel like she only wrote TEC because they got popular, and began to include more prominent gay or bisexual male characters to ride the Malec hype and make it more marketable to her audience of mainly teenage girls. It also bothered me how she wrote homophobia out of TSC past CoHF, which I believe she did so she could add more LGBT characters but not have to deal with the struggles that were established earlier in the series. It really had "Alec came out and suddenly changed the mind of all the old ass Shadowhunters involved in the Clave" energy. Simply reading TDA it wouldn't have bothered me, but it does because I think she did a bad job at writing Alec's experiences as an out gay man. He is closeted for 3 books because of alleged homophobia, but then she never actually writes him experiencing any of it. She has him mention his struggle like twice in books 4,5, and 6 combined, and then shoehorns in this moment with his dad at the end of book 6 that rehashes of a conversation they had that took place off page 3 books ago

So this is kinda weird but with the mention of fanfiction being better than the books and the mention of Bella Swan’s total lack of characterization, I have a fanfic recommendation for anyone who used to love Twilight but has since recognized its flaws: “Luminosity” is a twilight fic that rewrites the whole series with the premise “what if everything was the same except Bella was super competent, smart, and ambitious?” and it goes on to do the craziest, most impressive stuff with the worldbuilding that it’s clear Stephenie Meyer NEVER could have thought of... that fic is what I always think of when ppl talk about fic being better than the canon.

My unpopular opinion: Harry Potter is an amazing series! Here’s why. I think a lot of people compare it to other series they have read, but the other series they have read are YA or adult. Harry Potter is a children’s book. You find it in the children’s section of the library and bookstore. The protagonist is 11 when we first meet him. When compared to the likes of Roald Dahl and Beverly Cleary, the HP series can and do hold their own. It is the only series in its genre that has a story that complex. What other children’s series compares to HP? For me the books are at the pinnacle of its genre.

@@user-sq2px5pb2s Granted this is just anecdotal evidence, but I have come across more people that think that Harry Potter is overrated than people who agree with me. I have also come across a ton of people who don't like the series as much after re-reading it as an adult. I am not surprised that an adult would not find the familiar plot of a children's book that complex or compelling. I think there are fair criticisms to be made regarding the series (lack of diversity for instance), but in this point in time, Harry Potter has few rivals in its genre.

It is a really good serie. But if you tell some people it has flaws, they will bite your head off. And to your question "What other children’s series compares to HP ?", I will always respond that "His Dark Materials" is vastly better to me. It held so much better when I reread it as an adult.

That's only because of book marketing having changed so that what was previously marketed 10 to 13 age category is now marked as ya. Harry Potter I think is suitable for younger ages especially the earlier books. beverly clearly books and Roald Dahl are for a waay younger audience. I've read many books that that dealt with more complex or dark things at that age that previously weren't considered ya but are now. Basically kids have been getting less challenging content and censorship and somehow hp has survived largely because of the early books. Northern lights? Goodnight mister Tom little women. Holes the giver, hobbit, Patrick Ness. For some reason these are all in ya now. Even books like freaking Alex rider.

It’s interesting that you said that because you had to reread Harry Potter for school, you saw the flaws of the series/that a lot of the series is actually it’s nostalgia. I’ve actually taught the Harry Potter series in a college class (an upper division GE) and actually seeing the detail, references, and world building in the original series reinforces the craft of the series. You have to remember that before HP, there simply weren’t children’s books like it. I understand that it’s has flaws but honestly, no other series in our time receives such criticism as HP simply because of its universal popularity. Yet we forget why it was universally popular lol It’s becoming popular now with the bad HP films and play that have come out to say that the original series wasn’t even that great, but that actually comes from lack of knowledge of the history of YA novels prior to HP as well as lack of knowledge of a lot of the detail worked into the series. Sorry for the long comment but I’ve literally studied and crafted an entire college course on this lol

On the Harry Potter thing, as someone who is fully immersed in the fandom day in and day out (I’m writing this wearing my Ravenclaw jacket in a room painted bronze and blue with a deathly hallows poster on the wall), I fully accept that part of my love for the series is nostalgia, and certainly the reason I’m so in love with it is because I read it at such a young age (6 or 7, I think). But, as a part of the fandom, I critique the books and the plot and the characters a lot, and I still love the series, so I’d say that while nostalgia should be taken into account, the incredible world building and character creation should not be discredited. (Btw, I’m not bashing that submission, this is just my take)

My *personal* unpopular Harry Potter themed opinion: Harry shouldn't have been the person this series is centred around and even now that he is that, there are so many things that just never made sense to me. For one, the one kid who could defend the evil magical overlord of evil lives in an abusive environment and instead of getting him out of there and letting him live with someone else, they send him back there year after year, even though he could die of neglect or physical abuse or become so traumatized that he won't be able to do shit anymore, etc, etc.. 2. Instead of idk putting him through a lot of training and giving him extra lessons and lectures, they just let him run around with his friends, he has girlfriends and all that stuff while there's a war going on and he's supposedly the only one who could stop it??? Focus, kids! 3. Draco deserved a real redemption arc in the books and either he or Hermione should have been the one to actually safe the day. Hermione because she was better suited for this than Harry, also better prepared because she actually did her damn homework. Draco would've been cool because that'd be the ultimate solution to that inner conflict that granted was better done in the movies than the books imo. Anyway, would've made for an amazing ending. Bonus unpopular opinion: JK Rowling is annoying

Listening to you talk about Draco in the book versus in the movie, I had a minor epiphany about why I also shipped Dramione when I was younger. I think you're so right about Tom Felton's portrayal of Draco. It definitely lent to a more sympathetic read of Draco as a character. Of course, I was also at a stage of life where I was very much into the bad boy with a redemption arc who is only 'bad' because of his tortured past but could change with the ~right woman~. I am BEYOND curious about the angle the person who said Bella is a strong female character is coming from.

I actually thought Harry Potter was more relatable, and wholeheartedly disagree that he's a bland protagonist, I felt that he was a lot more like me and Hermione a lot more like someone I'd want as a best friend which is perfect considering how the series was actually written. It's definitely a personal preference thing it was just weird to me that she was almost universally the favorite and most relatable, not just like, the favorite of some people who are actually like her.
