shadow and bone has been particularly painful for me because of how convoluted and muddled the plot is. six of crows deserved so much better and i just know if the script was given enough thought and the characters enough screen time it would have been incredible. juggling 10+ character povs clearly isn’t working out for them

Oh, my heart! 😖 Anne with an E is absolutely a superb show, and it did deserve more time, but it hurt to hear it called “Better Than the Book.” Those books are so life-giving for me. The show is too, but I think of them as just being separate entities, since the story is so different.

Game of Thrones... I would argue it was never a good adaptation, though I'm sure I'm in the minority there, but the first four seasons were good TV in their own right. The tone and vibe of the books is so different - it's much more steeped in mysticism, there's much less pointless violence and cruelty that the show revelled in, almost all of the characters are completely different people. And the key theme of the books is that revenge is pointless, and that just because the world is horrifically unjust and cruel does not mean it's pointless to be a good person. It's a story about hope. The show has never been that. I love Sansa Stark. In the books. I think what the show did to her after _the thing_ in season 5 (which does not happen in the books) is deeply misogynistic. I think the way the show portrays all its female characters after George left is deeply misogynistic. But turning Sansa into an emotionless girlboss who literally says if she could meet the people who abused her again, she would thank them for making her a stronger person is the most awful. Turning Arya into an emotionless girlboss who fully embraces the murderous philosophy of the cult she's supposedly escaped is a close second (Arya's arc in the books is a tragedy about a traumatised child being inducted into a death cult who want to erase her identity. In the show it's about a traumatised child becoming an awesome ninja so she can take her revenge). In the books Sansa's defining trait is her compassion. Her ending up as Queen in the North would be great because she's actually a great person who wants to be fair, and sees the best in everyone, but is also incredibly intelligent, and slowly learning how to tell whether or not someone is trustworthy. In the show she gets into pointless fights with Arya (to be fair, Arya instigated, which was also incredibly stupid, especially since they could've just asked their omniscient brother to clear up any misunderstandings), Jon and Dany, keeps tactical information to herself for no reason, keeps _Littlefinger_ as an advisor even though she knows he's completely untrustworthy. And that would all be fine if the show realised these were problems but it doesn't. Game of Thrones post-GRRM is, in my opinion, the epitome of the "strong female character" wherein male writers and directors take "strong" to mean "physically capable and stoic" rather than well-written.
@momotozaki
@momotozaki Жыл бұрын
This! I haven't read the entirety of the book series but I agree about the slight tone change and the girlbossification of the female characters. Arya was my favourite character for such a long time but as the show went on, my feelings changed. By the end, she was pretty much unrecognisable to me, to be honest. I love Sansa too but again, I agree that the way the showrunners dealt with her character was pretty upsetting at times. It's truly a shame. I too, feel that the first 4 seasons were pretty great. I've rewatched them so many times. I need to finish the book series too. 😅

I love that statement sooo much as some one who really, really liked the books I couldn’t watch more than three seasons. The books and the show are at some point just two totally different stories. And I couldn’t more agree with your opinion about Sansa and Arya. People told what happens to Arya in the show and I couldn’t believe it because it was so contrary to her book personality arc. And for Sansa I think they just mixed and matched every character trait that sounded fine to them.

Imagine still hating Sansa in 2023. People are so ignorant lmao for me she's one of the best character because she's realistic, and she had an insane character development throughout the show. She's my queen idc idc I prefer her over Arya who's straight up overrated.
@crazybiogeek
@crazybiogeek Жыл бұрын
Sansa was supposed to be less likeable than Arya at the beginning. Arya was portrayed as someone with basic common sense, more like her father, etc. Arya gets to do "cool" stuff like training to fight. Sansa was portrayed as more of a "typical" preteen girl, and honestly with more of her mother's traits and we all know Catelyn has flaws too. So there's nothing WRONG with not liking a character who isn't supposed to be likeable. It's the fact that she grew up, learned from her mistakes and worked to get revenge using the resources at her disposal is what makes Sansa awesome. Plus, in the books, she hasn't done as much as Sansa's show counterpart. In terms of her character in the show, she's had a lot more growth and has done a lot more and has had more screen time in general. Of course show Sansa is better. But folks who are hoping the book series might be finished someday are wondering if book Sansa will ever get to do anything fun, cause right now she's sitting around with Robyn Arryn and doing not much of anything. It's quite disappointing. And understandable if people are still not very happy with her POV if she hasn't been as awesome. Oh well, someday we might get that character growth we deserve. I wanna see Littlefinger go down.

as a former shadowhunters (tv) fan, i've come to the conclusion that sometimes bad things are more compelling because the potential is the perfect breeding ground for fan culture. yes it's bad, but my memories from that time in the fandom are top tier. some of my favourite shadowhunters tv moments have nothing to do with the actual show, just the fandom around it (true sh tv fans remember the brot3, the many canon divergence jimon fics around that one episode with the seelie queen, the truly feral reaction to dominic sherwood saying a slur on a livestream, etc.)

I also loved The Daisy Jones and the Six book so much. I totally see what you mean about those last few episodes, it did feel like the “two women fighting over a man” cliche. In the book, I loved Camila’s complicated relationship with Daisy and the difficult friendship they had. But I actually really liked the show’s rendition that pivotal scene of their conversation. I felt like Camila deserved to be angry at her, because while Billy was mostly in the wrong, Daisy was too. I thought it was a realistic reaction for her to have, while still restoring their mutual respect for each other in the long run. I like to think of the different endings from the book and show as two alternate universes; I think they both have their values. This was a lot, but I’ve been DYING to talk about it with someone, I’m so glad you brought it up. Love your videos by the way.

Noooooo, was not expecting that opinion from you Hannah! I feel like even though you didn’t enjoy George’s book, you should know that the progression of Dany’s story in the books is vastly different from the show! I think a lot of people, myself included, get very passionate about her ending being so tainted and wrong because that’s not the Dany we know. From season 4 or 5 maybe I feel like GOT lost the essence of who she is (no coincidence being that’s when they lost the source material lol). I PASSIONATELY don’t see her fate to be turning into a tirant, if the author ever does decide to finish the books. I may not see her sitting in the Throne either, but that’s because I believe her destiny not to be to restore her family’s glory and name, but to be better than her ancestrals and to fulfill her journey as TPTWP.

People who hate Sansa aren't misogynists who dislike Sansa's intelligence. They hate that Sansa's character starts off being "illogical" and "traditionally feminine" (they assume innocence and compassion are traditionally feminine traits). I personally like Sansa, because I understand that losing her innocence and learning to manipulate people is part of her character arc. It's the same reason I'm okay with Anakin Skywalker being childish in _The Phantom Menace_ because it's important that we become acquainted with his innocence so that when it is taken away with the death of his mother in _Attack of the Clones_ it is all the more impactful.

I’d have to disagree with game of thrones, just because I tried reading it years before but I couldn’t get through it then picked it up again after house of the dragon started, and honestly, the books are kind of amazing. George’s writing isn’t the greatest, he’s not the best when it comes to writing women, children and sex but the story is amazing. He’s constructed such an incredible and elaborate world and the characters are so much deeper than they are in the show which I didn’t think was possible. Also the fantasy aspect of it is much more prominent which the show runners actively tried to minimize. I’d really recommend trying it again if you’re ever in a reading slump or something because I truly loved it which surprised me so much because I genuinely couldn’t get through it like 5/6 years ago

I also respect your opinion but Elrond kinda sucks in Rings of Power. Generally the Rings of Power series is pretty bad for several reasons. The main one for me being Galadriel. I don't have a problem with the actress that played her but her character was awful. Also, her facial expressions were incredibly weird. Every time she was talking to someone she was behaving like a robot, only moving her mouth as if the rest of her face was stuck

i feel like once you read the a song of ice and fire books you realize why they're worth reading and that the problems w the show started a lot earlier than the last season. i watched the show first and i still adore it, it's enjoyable in it's own right. for example margaery is my fave character in the show but not the books, not that there's anything wrong w book margaery serving a different purpose for the story. my favorite character in the books is sansa, and i feel the show never fully understood/appreciated her character and the arc they gave her irks me. same is true of a lot of characters. not that the books are perfect either but i think if ur a fan ur missing out on the full picture if you don't read the books

the unedited scene in the first season of 13 reasons is BURNED into my memory. i vividly remember watching it at night in my dorm room and being horrified that they would let that be in a show. i kept waiting for the camera to cut away and it just DIDNT. also felt like i was in such shock that i couldn’t look away 😭 i had no interest in watching the second season after that and am so glad that i didn’t have to encounter the unedited one from that…. cant believe that show was marketed towards teens with such triggering material. not even in a way that’s supposed to inform or educate, merely for the sake of shock value :( makes me so sad

Yes love your opinions on Daisy Jones & the Six show!! I very much did not like, I only finished it because I kept hoping it would get better and it only got worse. It’s very much a surface level understanding of the characters, especially the Camila-Billy-Daisy dynamic. Like I feel like the writers really did not care about Camila & they didn’t think that Billy really loved her/would have been with her if not for Julia and it just!! Took away all of the nuance and anguish and I can never watch it again

I really honestly suggest reading at least sansa's chapters because her story is so dramatically different. there are a lot of little things they changed really that ended up making a big issue later on but honestly the failure of the show heavily hinges on them butchering Sansa, stannis, Tyrion and so on. reading about their reasoning for completing destroying half the plot to place Sansa with the Boltons honestly made me feel ill. the books can be tedious and it's been years since I read them but I do remember deeply adoring certain characters. if you ever decide to try and read asoiaf/GoT again, I highly suggest going with reading until you find a pov that frustrates you then start skipping that pov until you get to a point where some other pov references a character you've skipped becomes interesting then start catching up with their chapters. I'm not sure if I'm explaining well. when I was reading honestly Danny and Jon were getting on my nerves pacing wise because they were so disconnected so I started skipping them. at a certain point I went back and caught up with them in a big chunk and it honestly made the books so much better for me.
@ringofbrass
@ringofbrass Жыл бұрын
I believe I actually would do this for quite a few characters, essentially isolating different sets of characters that were connected then catching up on another set. sometime during the 3rd or 4th book I was invested enough in everyone to read the books straight through... I think. it's been about ten years as I read the books between season one and two.

I recently read "Daisy Jones & the Six" with a friend of mine and really enjoyed the book. I've been trying to get into the show, but to me the characters initially felt inauthentic to the book. While I'm not opposed to changing some things when adapting to a new medium (most of the time its necessary), I felt that most of the changes they made either didn't have a clear purpose or altered key things that I really appreciated about the characters and storylines from the book. Atmospherically, it also felt way too polished to me. Like, the show is supposed to be about rock 'n roll in the '70s and it didn't feel gritty or messy enough. I want to watch the entire thing, but it's been difficult for me to get through!

Daisy Jones is also one of my favorite books of all time as well. I honestly had to stop the show part of the way through because it upset me so much from how much they changed from the book. I should have known not to go further after Chuck went to Dental School instead of being drafted and dying in war. It didn't feel like the harsh reality of that time period at all that Taylor Jenkins Reid really personifies in her writing. Like you said there was no depth in anything. Eddie had no personality compared to the books. Warren was fine but I missed the Bones subplot. When Billy and Daisy first dueted at the part I got chills. SPOILERS I HATED HOW THEY KISSED IN THE PARKING LOT THAT DEFEATED LIKE AN ENTIRE THEME OF THE ENTIRE BOOK UGH!

i think part of the problem with Rings of Power was due to the lockdown, they were initially filming in NZ, I worked at the hotel where the SFX and stunt downs were staying and nzs lockdown was really strict so they had to stop working for quite a while but the studio kept the same timeline for them to finish and hired new people in the UK to finish off the work

IM HERE FOR THE SANSA LOVE OH MY GOD LET ME RANT. when ppl criticize GRRM for not knowing how to write women i get soooo mad (this is not to say there is no criticism whatsoever to be had about the treatment of women in the GOT universe) because the ABSOLUTE range of amazing female characters GRRM has is insane (arya, cersei, brienne, catelyn and so on) and faaaaar faaaar more feminist, complex and well written than how a good majority of ya/na fantasy authors write their "badass FMC". I'm so sick and tired of the ideology that for a female character to be strong she has to be cutthroat or bloodthristy or heartless or masculine. Sansa has always and will always be my favourite fictional female character. I don't think i will ever relate to a character the way i do with her. her arc and character deveopment is the best in both the books and the show. Also, i think that even with how rushed the ending of the show was, she still managed to have the most complete and earned storyline. And i think this is the best example that YES, men can write amazing characters that are also women. A Song Of Ice And Fire is my favorite book series of all time (if u couldn't tell), i hope one day you'll give it a chance, cause i've litteraly never read something that i had already watched the adaptation of and that still managed to make me feel this passionate.

I totally agree with you sansa's storyline was the only one that gave me some kind of satisfaction out of that whole mess of a finale (it was rushed but yes she slayed) . Game of thrones for me is especially sad because THAT character's ending only makes sense where the show wanted it to go. In the books the writer gives so many hints that that is not the path that it's supposed to lead to and he's said it MULTIPLE times on interviews. So it's a special pain for me. But if someone only knows the show, I can see how that's the ending they'd think makes sense, because they really went another route with the whole thing.
