11:23 I read “A Study in Drowning” during the summer, and I have to say it is one of my FAVORITE books of all time. Even though this is clearly a fantasy in a fictional world, I could clearly tell the author wanted to tell the story of Zelda Fitzgerald (The wife of the author who wrote “The Great Gatsby” and the subject of the real life conspiracy that this book is based on) with respect. She clearly did her research. I lived near Zelda’s birth city, so we are well aware of her history. It touches my heart as a woman and as a creative.

For reading Dracula I can really recommend participating in Dracula Daily. Since every chapter in the book has a date you get send the chapters on that date and get to experience the story as it unfolds on the real timeline. It’s like watching a show where the episodes come out each week. I think it starts in the beginning of May each year.

I live in England, and recently I visited where the Brontë sisters grew up in Haworth, Yorkshire. It was so beautiful for a start, but the museum was so lovely. I actually picked up in their gift shop ‘the tenant of wildfell hall’ by Anne Brontë. She’s the only sister I haven’t read yet, and Jane Eyre is one of my favourite classic books as somebody who isn’t well read or a huge fan of classics

If you like mushroom horror, I would recommend Fruiting Bodies by Kathryn Harlan. It's a short story collection with a story that features that theme, and the rest of the collection is really good too. I read it about 2 years ago, and I think about the story "Fiddler, Fool, Pair" all the time. Definitely one of my favorite short story collections that I've read.

dracula is 100% as good as you were led to believe, you have to check it out! the majority of adaptations leave out pieces of the story OR alter it for the worse; so dracula will have a lot of surprises. its beautifully written and is full of gloom, despair and suffering, but also hope and resilience; and sometimes peculiar funny phrasings (''foul bauble of man's vanity'' you will always be famous) there is also a literal cowboy there. just chillin

If you like Ava Reid's work then I recommend reading Angela Carter, especially her short stories in The Bloody Chamber, as well as in Burning Your Boats. She has this luscious, dark, gothic atmosphere in her work, and she really is just splendid to read. I find Ava Reid the new Angela Carter in a way, because of the fairy tale retelling stuff, but also because they both have the same atmosphere in their works that just so perfect for autumn/fall.

I'm glad you enjoyed Lady Macbeth because unfortunately for me it was a disappointing read. It was also the first Ava Reid book that I didn't like. I think I had some particular expectations of what I wanted it to be and that's why I didn't like it. Like I was hoping to see the og Lady Macbeth (cunning, ambitious and ruthless) but it felt like Ava Reid made her into a completely different character. I felt like she had no agency and things were told to us rather than shown like we're constantly told she's observant and smart but every plan just backfires. I understand what Ava was trying to do but i think I wouldn't liked it better had this been a new story of it own rather than a Macbeth retelling.

@loriwilson76662 ай бұрын
Completely agree re: Heathcliff!! What is the new adaptation? I hadn't heard of this until you mentioned it! Heathcliff is described as a dark-skinned, dark-haired child of unknown origins. When he is brought to Wuthering Heights by Mr. Earnshaw, the family speculates about his background. His mysterious origins lead characters like Hindley and others to refer to him in racially charged terms, calling him a "gipsy" (a term commonly used in the UK int the past for for Romani or non-native people). Others refer to him as a "Lascar," a term that historically described sailors from South or Southeast Asia or the Middle East. Brontë never provides a clear answer and scholars have debated for years whether Heathcliff could be of Romani, Indian, Middle Eastern, or African descent. Not only is casting another white male a massive misrepresentation of what Brontë intended but his dark skin is a metaphor for his outsider status in the novel and his ambiguous origins amplify his role as a "dark" and tragic figure in both the social and emotional landscapes. I really hope they get the casting right this time round.
