I did 2 corn knives that were my great-grandfathers. They were also too pitted to grind out so I used Evapo-Rust to remove the rust and then cold blued the blades. I did one handle out of quarter-sawn sycamore and the other out of black walnut from a blow down in the woods behind my house. I couldn't find any tube brass for the lanyard ferrules so I cut the necks and bases off .223 cases and removed the burrs with a chamfer tool. I really enjoyed the whole process so now I'm looking for something else to restore.
@AcmeRestorations3 жыл бұрын
Very cool. I'm working on another project where I'm going to actually blue some steel. Hard to get that process dialed in but the results should be fantastic.

Nice handle. Polishing the blade not important?
@AcmeRestorations4 жыл бұрын
Not a lot you can do with 1.5mm thick steel that's been pitted by rust. Polished it would look like crap and you run the risk of removing material. So I went with acid etched. Not everything can be restored to it's original condition.

Everyone likes different looks, but that dark etch protects from rust on high carbon Steel. It wouldn't last long if he polished the blade to be shiny.

personally i would have added 3 fullers on each side and modified the handle and added a D-guard turning it into a cutlass but pretty good restoration
@AcmeRestorations4 жыл бұрын
Yeah but I don't want a cutlass; I'm going to use this as a machete :). I thought about fullers and a top saw, but the blade is hardened and I didn't have any way to grind those with any sort of precision, and i don't have anyway of re-heat treating something as long as a machete.

Legit question to anyone who knows because I don't: why bother with the Scotch Brite if you just follow with bead blasting? Doesn't the bead blasting do what the Scotch Brite did? Thx for any info.
@AcmeRestorations4 жыл бұрын
Sometimes plans change in the middle of a project :). I was going to sand it like you would a knife normally, but then realized the pitting was too deep so I went for the glass bead blasting to get the matte finish.

that was a great job ..tho a few things I may point out..not to judge you but just as a pointer maybe..my opinions only of course. 1. at the lanyard hole in the handle why insert a hollow brass pin thru it when the matterial itself is brass? Cause its jarringly noticble ..and also i would have thinned that area down some. 2. I prolly would have used a pin in the guard to secure it and not just trust the epoxy to hold it. 3. Um..sorry to sound kinda rude but..you really need to learn how to sharpen the blade better. using a file can be fine after blunting it by shaping..but wow..even if its using a belt grinder on it or a belt sander...or a sharpening stone used correctly. A just a curiosity...why did you go thru so many steps for the rust removal on the blade? I mean if in the end you were going to sandblast it..why do all the other steps? Just start off with a sandblasting and then polish it up and etch it. Other than that..it really was a great video and the handle looked amazing other than the few things i stated. Great job! Ya got a subscriber.
