#acne #SkinBlemishes #TreatingAcne
MEDICAL ANIMATION TRANSCRIPT: Acne is a skin disease consisting of blemishes that can occur on your face, neck, chest, shoulders, and back. Acne is very common during the teen years but it can affect you during adulthood as well. So you keep your hair and skin well lubricated your body depends on sebaceous glands which sit just under your skin. These glands secrete an oily substance called sebum which coats your skin and hair to prevent them from drying out. Sebum travels up hair follicles and out through your pores onto the surface of your skin. Your hair follicles routinely shed dead skin cells which sebum carries out of your body. When your body produces extra sebum and dead skin cells, they can stick together and clog your pores resulting in skin blemishes. Then bacteria that normally exist in small amounts on your skin can flourish in the sebum in the clogged pore leading to inflammation. Depending on where the clog is located and if you have inflammation, acne may appear as whiteheads which are clogged follicles closed off from the air, blackheads which are clogged follicles that turn a darker color when the clog is exposed to air, pustules commonly called pimples which are inflamed follicles clogged with puss, or cysts which are larger, painful, puss-filled lumps going deep under the skin. Hormonal changes, particularly a rise in testosterone, can lead to sebum overproduction which is why acne often occurs during the teen years. However it can occur at any age. Other factors contributing to the development of acne are bacteria, certain medications, and genetics. If you have a mild case of acne your doctor may recommend an over the counter lotion with one of several active ingredients. Benzoyl peroxide kills bacteria, dries excess oil, and removes dead skin cells clogging pores. Salicylic acid slows the loss of skin cells to prevent clogged pores. It may also break down whiteheads and blackheads. Alpha hydroxy acids such as lactic acid help remove dead skin cells, reduce inflammation, and stimulate the growth of new smoother skin. Sulfur removes dead skin cells and dries excess oil. These are strong chemicals that may irritate your skin. Follow the directions for use exactly. If over the counter products are not effective, your dermatologist may prescribe stronger prescription lotions such as vitamin A which reduces the buildup of dead skin cells in your pores, topical antibiotics which kill bacteria on your skin, or a combination of benzoyl peroxide and topical antibiotics. For moderate to severe cases your dermatologist may prescribe an oral medication alone or in combination with a topical treatment. These medications include oral antibiotics which kill bacteria and reduce inflammation and isotretinoin which is used only for the most severe cases. A corticosteroid injection may be given to relieve your pain and help clear up a particularly large lesion. For women birth control pills containing estrogen may be prescribed to minimize the effects of testosterone. Regardless of the treatment your doctor recommends, good skin care is essential. For example wash problem areas twice daily with a mild soap and wash gently without scrubbing. If you have dry or peeling skin use an oil-free water-based moisturizer. When choosing any product to put on your skin look for an oil-free or noncomedogenic label, which means it won't clog your pores. Avoid picking or squeezing blemishes as these actions may lead to infection or scarring. And avoid touching your face with your hands, your hair, or any object such as a cell phone.

Society puts too much emphasis on acne being a Teen related social issue rather than an actual medical problem. Severe acne looks damn painful and those suffering from it deserve help, not humiliation. Really hope you guys can get treatment if needed.

I used to suffer from acne for more than half of my life. I've always thought it's important to wash throughly like twice a day with the most expensive products and have been through 2 cycles of Accutane. I got super miserable and depressed in a period that I didn't bother to wash my face routinely, but that was it and found the main cause of my acne. I was washing and applying topical creams twice a day which caused my skin to irritate and removing the protective barrier (not sure what it's called) but this also produced so much oil on my face. My solution was washing my face once every 2 days with a gentle face wash. My favorite is CeraVe hydrating facial cleanser. DONT scrub your face with the cleanser just pat it on and gently massage and gently rinse off just to leave some of the product on your skin, and pat dry. Always treat your skin like to super sensitive. I know there are various causes to breakouts but this is my remedy and im just giving my suggestion for others to test out. BTW I'm a male 29 years old and it's been working for me 3 years. Wish you all the best.

What I realise about acne is, curing them is one thing but achieving healthy skin barrier is actually the most essential starting step. Being so long battling with acne, especially hormonal ones, made me forgot that while acne could always be ever occurring there's also ways to create a better condition on your skin that will makes them won't appear or less severe, like learning about the soil instead keep killing the pests.

Very informative. One of the most important acne exacerbating factor that is often overlooked is stress. Stress raises cortisol levels, can exacerbate acne. Stress can affect a person's hormonal balance and the skin's immune function. The likelihood of having oily skin and clogged pores may rise as a result.

Actually there are lots of bacteria in our cell phones. And we usually don't clean it with some liquids to kill them. So it's like using a towel for 2 years and not even washing it but still using it. You'll notice towel gets really dirty but we usually don't see those on screens. So try buying some cleaner for your laptop keyboards, phones,tv/ac remote which you frequently use. So that will make big difference and help.

Normally acne that fluctuates with your menstrual cycle regularly is related to hormonal changes, rather than just sebum/skin cells/etc. Give it some time for your body to go through puberty and if your acne persists past the age of 18/19 then get it checked out. I'm still getting hormonal acne now, and I'm 17. Try not to let it bother you too much, it will just weigh you down, and it will pass.

When i was a teen i had the most terrible case of acne that left me so scarred... My dad took me to a doctor who perscribed a pill that i cant recall, and my cousin too, and it only made our faces bloat. It did nothing but make us look fat. Regular acne benzoil peroxide also did nothing as well. Only years later inmy late 20s did a doctor who was a family friend perscribe salycylic acid - and my terrible acne disappeared overnite virtually!!! Please, please, dont suffer acne or take advice from quack doctors, INSIST on salycylic acid only!! Do not accept anything else unless you want skin that looks like the surface of the moon for the rest of your life, like i have. Please, please listen to the voice of experience

My skin calmed down a lot ever since I gave up sugar and restricted my carb intake to a bare minimum. I did have a massive acne breakout recently, when I ran out of exfoliating serum (aka acid) and didn’t stock up for a few weeks. And since my IUD needs to be replaced soon, perhaps it’s losing the effectiveness at regulating my hormones…

I so agree with you on sugar, I suffered acne a great deal as well and it's in my 30's where I came to discover that sugar played a major role in my break outs. Since reducing sugar & sometimes using little measures of honey instead intake I've seen a great improvement & I don't break out as often.

Many things can cause acne. Don't think it's because you are dirty. Oils, hormones, even dry skin. Anything can send the skin out of balance to cause acne.

I developed acne in my late teens and was eventually successfully treated with tetracycline (for several years) and retinA. But I wish I had known then about the importance of diet. I gave up sugar, refined carbs, seed oils, and processed food 18 mos ago, and it has reduced inflammation and improved my health enormously, including my skin.

There have been times when I was too lazy to wash my face before sleeping, and I also used to switch between different, cheaper skincare products. However, I noticed that this caused frequent breakouts for me. Nowadays, I make it a point to always take a bath before sleeping and consistently follow a skincare routine in the morning and at night. I have also started changing my beddings and pillow cases twice a week and making sure to drink plenty of water. As a result, I no longer experience acne breakouts after months of struggling with them. I have learned my lesson and I won't go back to trying different skincare products that can harm my skin. It's been tough because I even feel self-conscious about going out, thinking that everyone will stare at my face. I do feel a bit guilty because I still drink coffee and stay up late at night, but despite that, my acne breakouts have stopped. I believe that being consistent with good hygiene and proper skincare is the key.

My son was prescribed low dose antibiotics as a teenager for his acne. I believe that the long-term use of the antibiotics impacted his gut flora. As an adult, he struggles with alcohol abuse, and morbid obesity. Research is now showing that gut flora impact so many of our physical and mental issues.

I’m no physician, but I do not believe that the use of antibiotics have anything to do with alcohol abuse. In a matter of fact I’m quite sure it doesn’t. Maybe it could change your “gut flora “ for a time but I don’t see that as the big issue with antibiotics at all. I am somewhat curious why you would bring up his alcohol abuse in a video about acne. Was his acne so bad that it depressed him and he started looking for ways to feel better about himself?
