Kundasang, Borneo, Malaysia: 14 October 2019
The Sandakan Prisoner of War camp was established by the Japanese in World War II on the island of Borneo. Of the 2,434 Allied prisoners - mostly British and Australia - sent to Sandakan, only six, all Australians, survived. Most were killed on “death marches” from Sandakan to Ranau.
During a meeting of the Council of the Church in East Asia, a regional group of Anglican Churches on the continent, a memorial service was held at the Sandakan memorial. It was attended by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, and the Archbishop of Melbourne and Primate of the Anglican Church of Australia, Philip Freier.
With little time for planning, I handed a couple of cameras to colleagues and filmed the entire service and used the footage to put together this edit.
