Best Cordless Lawn Mower Head-to-Head Test
*** CORRECTION **
EGO tied for the best mower with the 21" Greenworks mower. Third place went to the 25" Greenworks and Black and Decker coming in 6-points behind the top two mowers.
A subscriber pointed out an error in one of the calculated values. When we recalculated the battery voltage the Greenworks did better on an Sq ft/ watt hr basis. That’s why it moved up to a tie.

We received 12 mower - 2 different models from 2 manufacturers including Greenworks and Kobalt. The models we tested included:
Black & Decker CM2060C
DEWALT DCMW220X2C
EGO LM2130SP
Greenworks 21" 2520102
Greenworks 25" 2510802
Hart HLPM021
Kobalt 80v KMP 6080-06
Kobalt40v KMP 2580-06
Makita XML08PT1
Ryobi RY401130
Skil SM4910-10
Stihl RMA 510 V
Cut Quality - Winner EGO Power+
To evaluate the cut quality we mowed adjacent areas with each mower side by side.
After cutting the grass we evaluated how well the grass was cut. The cut quality of the grass areas was excellent.
Noise Winner - Makita
Makita took the win with 80.5 dB and was noticeably quieter even without a decibel meter. HART came in second place with 82.4 dB and EGO was third with 84.1 dB.
Run-Time
Run-time is a big question on the minds of people considering the purchase of battery-powered mowers. So, how do you make any sense of that in order to determine the best runtime? We measured the performance of the mowers “out of the box,” and also normalized performance on the basis of the energy available. [Using Watt-Hours]
Watt-Hours is calculated by multiplying the voltage (actual load voltage, not the MAX that some companies advertise) by the battery pack Amp-Hours.
Run-time Procedure
The Kobalt 80v took first place, it ran 85.5 minutes and mowed 38,600 sq. ft. That’s 4.2 miles!Second place went to the MAKITA, it ran 83 minutes, and mowed 35,000 Sq. Ft. [3.8 miles] Third place went to the Greenworks 60V 21″ mower which ran for 65 minutes and mowed 27,700 Sq Ft. [3 miles]
The HART mower ran the least at 22 minutes and mowed 8,400 Sq. Ft.
Ergonomics - Winner 25″ Greenworks
The Greenworks mowers were virtually identical in a number of ergonomic categories and scored very well in those. In close second place was the EGO mower.
Handle Comfort & Adjustment Winner
Both of the Greenworks mowers were superior to the group in terms of comfort, handle height and adjustments.
Maneuverability Winner - Black & Decker. We evaluated how easily the mowers were to push and to cut around trees. This category is largely factored based on the mower weight, self-propulsion, and wheelbase design.
Black and Decker and DEWALT were more maneuverable than the rest of the mowers because they were NOT self-propelled.
The 25″ Greenworks was the best maneuverability in the self-propelled mowers. This was due because of the short wheelbase front to back.
The mowers with the longest wheelbase ranked towards the bottom.
Deck Height Adjustability Winner - Ryobi
The Ryobi mower was a dramatic stand out with a grab handle that allowed the user to lift or drop the mower while adjusting the height.
EGO took second place with the deck height adjustment out on the deck, clear of any obstructions.
Third place went to the Skil, the large handle and reinforced plastic detent plate worked smoothly and easily. Some mowers had knuckle-busting setups that would cause the user to hit the lower part of the handle assembly when adjusting the mower for taller cutting.
Compact Design & Storage Size Winner - EGO LM2130SP
The EGO really blew away the competition with their very easy to store design. Both Greenworks and the HART models also fold up fairly small.
Fit & Finish Winner - Makita
Makita stands out in this category.
This mower was built for daily nonstop use by professional landscapers. It’s a BEAST! The Makita features large-diameter rubber over-molded wheels, a steel deck, and everything about it is tight and made to stand up to some hard use.
Best Value Winner -Greenworks 21″
At the time of publication, the 21″ Greenworks mower was priced at about $349 with a 4.0Ah battery given the performance and overall quality this was a solid pick for the best value. This mower tied for 1st place overall and is the second least expensive in the group.
So who has the Best Cordless Lawn Mower?
EGO took 1st place as the BEST cordless lawn mower with and the 21″ Greenworks one-point behind it. Third place went to the 25″ Greenworks.
The fourth place was Black and Decker who had a SOLID showing.

This was an EXCELLENT review. Wow. I grew up working with my dad doing landscaping and lawn maintenance. I have a small yard now and it was hard to not buy a gas mower on principle but your review has given me a lot of confidence in any of these mowers. And that's after watching a lot of other reviews from non-professionals who didn't have the perspective I needed. Impressive. Have a subscribe! For the record, I am going with a Greenworks 40V 20 inch Cordless Twin Force Lawn Mower 25302 since it's on sale today.

i read/watched a lot of reviews last year when my 23 year old Black and Decker corded mower died. All of those reviews placed the 80 volt self propelled Kobalt as one of the highest rated of the mowers tested. I purchased it because of so many positive reviews and because of the 5 year warranty. I am very happy with it and it will even cut my yard when the grass is wet and overgrown which is something my previous corded mower would not do.

I agree - The presentation was excellent - and the cadence was about right -allowing the listener to comfortably absorb what is being said without the need to be hyper-focused when one is in a verbal speed challenge or perhaps incontinent and having to rush because of the urgent need to visit the Toilette. I am evaluating which brand of battery-powered mower to purchase. The AUSTRALIAN made VICTA is similar to the U.S. KOBALT 80v - except that our VICTA has a steel chassis and uses the same BRIGGS AND STRATTON electric motor $499 AUD with a 2ah battery and charger $799 AUD with a 4ah battery and charger - which in my view is excessive pricing

Great effort overall on the head-to-head! Respectfully, however, I think there are some significant errors with the Greenworks 21" evaluation. Especially your "best value" recommendation for the GW21. "Best value" was stated as being based on a $350 price tag with a 4 AH battery. Price is incorrect and the rankings were based on 9AH worth of batteries. First, the price quoted for the Greenworks 21" is incorrect. It was quoted at $350 with a 4AH battery verbally (21:45), but the screen shot clearly says $450 (accurate). From the website (at time of publication), this year's model is not available for less than $380 in the Tool Only version. Still not a bad value relatively, but it's definitely not the "2nd lease expensive". For only $50 more, the 25" is available with 6AH worth of batteries (4+2), however this may only be a temporary holiday sale price (7/7/2020). A strong case could be made for the Black and Decker at it's price point. On top of that, Greenworks does NOT offer a 5.0+4.0 battery package with this year's 21" model, which was what was used for the Watt Hours calculation (10:30). GW21 was given 3rd place in that category based on batteries that are not included with the mower (12:35). And it is certainly not available with those batteries at either of the prices quoted verbally or on-screen.

Spent a lot of time researching and bought the twin blade EGO self-propelled. What a beast. Best looking lawn I've ever had and mowed my yard, the 100' X 50' city walkway next to my house, and my neighbor's very long, dense and wet lawn, all on one charge with about 10-15% left. I couldn't be happier. Replacement batteries aren't cheap, but worth it to me to get rid of noisy, polluting gas mower. I expect the battery to last longer than five years at any rate based on other cordless devices I've used.

Jeremy Smith You wrote I have a small yard (thank god) So I am wondering - to which god are you referring to ? I am assuming it is the god of Lawnmowers. As there is a big difference between God ( The creator of the universe) UPPER CASE G to denote a proper noun and god - lower case g - means any other god except the One and Only God the Creator Besides this - God is not a Semitic word and was never used nor heard of in the Middle East. The word God derives from the word Gott - from the Yiddish language - which is a Low-Level Germanic language. In Semitic langiages it is Alloh in aramaic Allah in arabic Ellah in ancient hebrew. Which is why the National airline is Isra'el is EL AL The two words for the creator - in both hebrew and arabic/aramaic The arabs had a language long before Jews existed - and hebrew borrows heavily from arabic. Of course, there are many words in the English language that originates from arabic two of which are alcohol and coffee There are many others.

It really is a BEAST like you mentioned! I cut a huge yard with 14" grass, and it did awesome! Went through 4 battery changes, but I think normal maintenance mowing it could be done with 2 battery changes. But with the 4 batteries it comes with, plus 2 I already had, I never had any downtime! The Makita is definitely made to last for MANY years and is an absolute joy to operate. Like you said toward the beginning, I was also amazed at how quiet it is!! With that much power? It seems impossible, but it's real!! I think they put more engineering into the Makita than the other mowers.

Love my self propelled EGO mower , I believe it’s the only battery where you can charge it up straight after removing it from the mower. The battery will also self discharge down to storage charge if you haven’t used it for a while which means the battery will last longer. Mine is now 4 years old and is still perfect. Subbed and liked 😎👍

The best cordless lawn mower comparison video out there. Not only did you cover a lot of categories but you included a wide array of manufacturers. A lot of comparisons would not have included products from Hart or B&D as the perception of those manufacturers is not as high as others like DeWalt and Makita. The average consumer of these products is driven by price. At the same time, they want to know if they're getting their money's worth. A video like this does them a great service by providing them with enough data to make an informed decision. Personally, I just purchased the Greenworks 40v 21" mower. It arrives in a few days so I haven't used it yet. When this video popped up on my feed, I had to watch. While the model I chose was not reviewed in this test, I am confident that I made a good choice with a Greenworks product. I can't wait to take for a spin. Thank you for all you do, Rob. There are only a handful of channels that to well rounded reviews and this is one of the best. And hey, my name is Rob, too, so there has to be something to that, right?

thank you for this video, I'm 60 yr old and my yard guy doesn't come regularly and so my grass is over my yorkies head, gonna have to suck it up and get a mower. I have a gas mower but don't have the strength to pull the string to start it and I just had both knees replaced. The area I need to mow is about 600 sq feet. This video was very useful to help me decide.

@@Sophia-zk3tw I am going with a greenworks self propelled 24(x2) battery operated only because we have something called a 'sale barn' in my county that sells everything for 50% off retail and they just happed to get this mower in that is normally $499 but they will sell it to me for $250. Had that not come available home depot had a Ryobi on sale for $349, that was the next choice. The ones not self propelled are cheaper and I've watched a ton of videos that say the plastic deck ones are much lighter so non-self propelled may have worked. For me I thought the extra $100 or so for self propelled would be worth it.

Love my Ryobi 40v just bought it, its quiet, and good battery power. I ran out of grass to cut so kept cutting until the batter died. The deck height lever is positioned well. Has on board battery storage for swapping out.. Love that it mulches or bags. Love that there isnt a side discharge, eliminated dangerous eye debris and dust/dirt. Much more quiet than a gas mower

I was totally sold on the EGO & the Greenworks. The most important factor that changed my decision for me was which tools I already owned. Since 2010 my Dad started a collection of DeWalt power tools. Consequently, after moving out I chose DeWalt tools myself because that's pretty much all I'd used. Therefore, I'll be getting the DeWalt mower as I've got so many batteries to swap from which = infinite running time. Easily could've been any other brand. This is very important to consider for anyone looking at these machines.

EGO is the real deal. I Love the mower, trimmer, and blower of theirs that I bought. Zero problems and outstanding performance and quality. They came with a 5 year warranty too. Getting ready to buy their Hedger next. I will never go back to gas power again. No more gas fumes, oil changes, spark plug changes, clogged carburetors, pulling cord to start, and lets not forget the way louder operation noise level either and the heavier weight of gas powered equipment. You say good bye to all of that when you buy EGO instead. Pop battery in and just press start. Start with their lawnmower first and you will be an instant believer of their products trust me !!!

Considering the magnitude of just how much less it costs than anything else and how similar performance levels were across the board between nearly everything evaluated I'm somewhat surprised it wasn't the budget pick. One big consideration people should look at if they're not already buying based on existing battery platform, is the weight of the mower. In this comparison there's a 40ish pound spread among the models. I could see some people buying and thinking it'll fold up nice to hang on a garage/shed wall, then having to wrestle it like a 80lb bag of concrete.

Bought the 21 inch Greenworks self propelled for half price in October (paid $249)and it's a GREAT mower. Easy to adjust handle height and speed so my wife is finally starting to mow the lawn. Only issue is sometimes it powers down and gives you the low battery signal - and if you let it cool down it starts up again. Cuts beautifully too.

Despite what their marketing claims, battery mowers have nowhere near the same power as gas mowers. They are about 2.5 HP tops, or half of an entry level gas mower. They make up for this a bit with torque and by using smaller blades, but you still need HP to do work.

I don't understand how a mower which is the quietest, best built, long run time and "commercial design beast" with Makita's quality, OPE and tool options finished behind Black and Decker. It won more categories and finished 6th? Who cares that the handle doesn't fold. I prefer it doesn't and when I look at all the plastic parts on Ego and Greenworks, those WILL break. Plastic deck mowers are too light, steel deck mowers WILL rust. Makita offers an aluminum deck (DLM533Z, which is the mower that I have) and it will be around far longer than most if not all in the test. Same can be said about Makita's batteries and brushless motor. Also, there is a reason it doesn't have rubber on the handle, let's see how good the rubber overmold is on the Ego in three years. The other thing this review doesn't do is talk about batteries and chargers. I can mow non-stop using two batteries in the mower (5Ah) and by the time I deplete two, the other two on the charger are full. The last thing I will say is that the Makita is even MORE quiet in quiet mode. The Makita should have been number 1 or 2 in this review, certainly NOT 6.

Well done on this test! I am sure this took quite a while to test and compile all the results especially for this many units. Just one quick note regarding the EGO products which I have. From my research another thing that is a benefit from what I see is the very short charge time for the batteries. The 5.0 Ah batteries take approx. 35 minutes to fully charge from 10% using the rapid charger which is really amazing.

My 2 cents: bought a country property a year ago and the prior owners had the greenworks mower/small chainsaw/ and pole saw combo. They left all to me as they downsized on property. Appreciated it very much as I wanted to see how the battery packs held up. I'm a construction contractor so I have a slew of battery operated tools of all kinds. The combo was bought 2.5 years prior to me owning it. Once the season of mowing started I got the mower out and the mower wouldn't recognize the batteries were installed. I can build and fix just about anything. Inspecting underneath the mower and one of the blades were missing, further inspection the shaft the blade attaches to was extremely wobbling and looked like the bearings the shaft attaches to were broken. I have a 4 year old Honda gas mower that is a beast. There was an old yard machine with Briggs and Stratton engine in the shed on the property that had not been ran in years. So derelict it had an inch of dirt accumulated in the gas tank. After cleaning it out, changing oil, and spark plug, it fired right up no problem. The greeworks mower is so light it feels like my kids toy, positive thing if it worked. The chainsaw is barely faster than using an axe. Haven't used the pole saw yet. The durability and longevity of this system is subpar. If you're on a 1/4 acre lot and a tiny yard then it may last but in my experience, it's garbage. The push to get rid of combustion engines and manufacturers trying to put out ill engineered machines is just not there yet. My gas powered Honda mower is a Cadillac compared to the rinky dinky greenworks 90% plastic "toy."

Really? You let it get rained on constantly like that? Every video on that mower talks about how crucial it is to not allow the mower to get wet by cleaning it with a water hose because getting water in the mortar will destroy. In the instruction booklet it basically says on every page multiple times to not allow the mortar to get wet! And to not clean the mower with a water hose or pressure washer hose like at a car wash. Given that the vents for the motor are on the sides at the top of the mower right below where the battery open and close protector lid shuts makes it seem like what you are saying is either untrue or they over exaggerate greatly about water getting in the vents into the motor which will cause significant damage to the motor!
