Acorn to Arabella - Journey of a Wooden Boat - Episode 62: Fitting the Engine Beds

We pushed really hard to get the bronze floors finished up so they could be sitting in their places during the open house. In this episode we show how we got the floors ready to start fabricating the supports for the engine beds. Since everything fits in such a small space here and has to be fairly precise, we had to work on fabricating the floors while working wit the actual engine beds we are going to install. We therefore worked on each piece simultaneously to end up with a perfect fit.
The stern floors are so much higher in order to be at an appropriate height to accommodate and support the engine which also meant very large wings up the frames. If the ones down the rest of the center line took a while, these were that much more time consuming again! To put the correct twist and bend in a piece of bronze strapping one half inch thick by twenty four inches in length on a small A-frame press was challenging to say the least!
Thank you for following along and supporting our endeavor and we would like to thank everyone that came to our Open House! We had a blast!

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Same here. Getting the boat build is great fun. Seeing progress on a weekly basis I find very enjoyable. It will be a great moment when it is all done. But sad as well no more building video’s. I guess they will keep it for a while and do some sailing. Will they sell and build another boat?

@@scynx , I've worked in boat yards over 43yrs. and can tell you 100% you can build a small boat faster. These days with all the new tools, Internet, plans at your fingertips, overnight shipping. They are trying to make everything perfect and are new to building or rebuilding a boat. They should be having all the planking stock cut, planed, squared and stacked ready to go. Think the bronze flooring brackets slowed them down instead of using wood. As far as watching sailboat builds there's many on Y.T. Guess people saw these guy's really moved along in the beginning now it's a few of this and another few that done each video. Hopefully they will start to kick ass planking the boat? That goes fast and I always liked to do the planking because you will see the true lines of the boat.

@@MegaBait1616 No doubt you can build them faster, but as you said, you actually worked in a boatyard. These two had pretty much no clue about boatbuilding before this project. I agree that you can get bogged down in trying to make everything perfect, but considering how they're not doing this as a business, they don't have to be very efficient with their time spent.

Keep those Akiva cameos coming. The pace reflects the nature of wooden boat building. Pace is great. Each of the bronze floors is a work of art in its own right. It's way too late but after watching all the challenges of shaping and welding, my guess is that you two could have sand cast them in about the same amount of time. Keep on doing the amazing work!

I’ve built a few small boats, canoes & kayaks, far from perfect. But each one built a little better than the last. I’ve learned to think about each small part as an individual project, taking satisfaction in it when it’s done. As I got better at boat building, I got the patience that comes with understanding the effect that more careful work would have on the final product - a beautiful boat. This video is an outstanding example of that method. I’d say you guys show a lot of boat building maturity in taking your time, and being “perfectionists” in your work. You’re making a boat to be proud of, and are an example for us who have less patience. Perhaps more important, your work, the building, is the point and the joy. It’s not a race, we’re not hoping for it to be over! As Robert Hastings said about an imaginary train trip through life, it’s all about the journey; “the station will come soon enough.”

Guys, long story so please forgive, When I was 12 my Grandpa brought home a 40 foot yacht that he was going to restore. We lived in North Carolina not far from the outer banks, the boat ended up having Termites and was non repairable. It was built in Boston around 1910, We ended up disassembling it to keep what was useable, forward to when I was 18 He passed. I had the remaining wood used to make furniture, the brass hardware I gave to a boat builder in VA but I still have planks of Teak that I am saving. Thanks for letting me live my childhood dream thru the Arabella. Have watched since the first episodes.

I know the feeling, as I am working on a 1957 runabout boat restoration , people drop in from time to time and I can tell that they are thinking "Is that all you have done ?" There are many countless hours spent on designing, planning, fitting, jigs & fixtures that they don't understand... And never will !! Just remember you're dream and the end result, It will be well worth it !! How many times has " Life" gotten in your way ? ....So far ??? Don't worry about it !! I know you get asked "when will it be done ?" I get asked that all the time . Both of you seem to have the right frame of mind, patience and drive !!! keep up the excellent work !!! Jim

Work at your own pace guys. Long term build projects where each part is fitted simply take time. It's not like you are building 100 of the exact part and you can jig up for such an effort. This isn't mass production after all. It's just a mass of work and we enjoy the videos.

I'll grumble a little bit on your behalf. You are giving us a fantastic gift by allowing us to view aspects of a project that I would have a virtually 0% chance of being involved in. The cautious and thoughtful approach does take time and I enjoy watching nearly every second of the process. Taking the time to savor the work that you are doing is one of the highlights of my week.

I agree with most of the comments on here too. What makes this project great is the time and meticulous effort you're all putting into this. Faster updates either mean rushed project or less meaningful videos. Thanks guys.

Loved this video! Y'all are doing the right thing by taking the time to perfect each piece. Don't worry about people wanting it faster. If they want something done quicker, they should build their own boat. People's lives will ultimately depend on Arabella being built right when she's sailing on the water & there's no need to rush for that reason alone.

I usually don't comment on youtube videos but, I feel compelled to this time. Being a craftsman for more years than I'd like to admit (Pipe organ builder), I know first hand how people who have never done this kind of work feel that the pace is to slow. I think you are showing the proper attitude toward these comments. It seems that you realize that this perception is not made out of any negativity, but only a lack of perspective for the task. In my never to be humble opinion, you handled this well (and better than many). For this you, again, in my opinion, have earned a great deal of praise. As to your videos and timeline, I think they are both perfect and wouldn't change a thing. As a woodworker and sailor, I look forward to the release of each video. So my advice would be (remembering that it is free advice and worth every penny you're paying for it) is, Stay the course, Keep true and hold fast. Cheers

I think it's very important that your videos capture the level of effort required, and the time it takes, to really build a boat of this size, using traditional wood construction techniques. That is in itself valuable for education. People who want the videos to "move faster" aren't getting it. Greg

As it appears the huge majority say - just build YOUR boat in YOUR time lads! You are doing a terrific job! I definitely understand why Alix made that point! I think we all, who are trying to realise our dreams and goals, get pressure from some who just want to see the end result, the last page without the story.

Don't rush anything. Plenty of thinking will avoid cock ups. Those who want you to go faster can build their own bloody boat. Many subscribers, like me, know little about boat building, we want to see the detail. Go at your own chosen speed (sorry Bob). I also agree with Pete Nash, The rate of progress and the content is just perfect. It's your boat. What is it with some people, they just can't stand to take more than 5 minutes to do anything? They are rushing through their lives and will soon find it has all gone behind them without them noticing. Smell the coffee, enjoy the journey. This boat build is a great story.

I had to pause the video to comment, which I do not like doing. You guys are doing something very special by sharing this project with us and I for one, while I am rooting for your eventual completion and next step, really am enjoying your videos of the progress. I am a contractor and some days it feels as though nothing has been done but a step back to plan ahead or fabrication that needs to be done is completed. I usually do not worry about those who comment about things you had to stop the video to address. Just enjoy the journey and realize there is no real destination only more journey. Thanks again you two for everything, I tell everyone about this channel.

Also, I like the pace of the videos. It is a time investment on our part that makes us feel like we are involved in the build in some small way. Time lapse contruction videos are a dime a dozen, but they do not get the viewer emotionally involved. The build of Arabella is a long term investment that has me cheering you all on every time I watch. Well done. On a side note, it does seem like I can see a little burnout setting in. Perhaps a video of you guys on a weekend vacation would be good for you, and get some views.

The first large boat I built was a Ted Brewer design. I was young then and planed on 2 years to build it, 6 years later I was finished. Don't rush it you will be much happier with with the outcome if you take your time. As builders when looking at the finished boat we tend to see all the little flaws and not the beautiful boat that sits in the water in front of us. So take your time you will be happier in the end.
