I've been anticipating this moment since I started watching. I can't imagine what it was like for You 2, waiting literally years for it. I've never built a boat this size before but I reckon I will sometime. However for me I'll have to order my lumber as I don't have the timber required. My smaller boats are all from combined new & reclaimed lumber. Old barns & houses are often a great resource. Watching the 2 of you in your endeavors reminds me of days with Dad that have left me with some of my fondest memories. Even today as I move through the stages of boat building, I always think back on the time Dad taught me that specific task. Wish I had found Your channel sooner.

Wow I can't imagine 400 500 years ago and building a boat from wood without power tools although I'm sure they had all sorts of tools but no electricity oh boy what a rough go well I just got the most amazing rush of serenity from either between the music and the hand tools and putting in those brass screws, it just sent the most amazing rush of calm through my brain.

What a lovely sight to see that garboard finally home and a joy to watch you use a brace and bit to snug those screws home. My yankee screwdriver is sitting at the bottom of Lymington River after I dropped it in the drink whilst working on a yacht from a dinghy.

The rest of the world doesn't know what it's missing. This is the most ZEN experience on the internet. As a woodworker for most of my worklife I often giggled to myself while working with the thought of how fortunate I have been to actually get paid for doing something I love so much. This project is manna to me, thank you.

Very satisfying seeing the garboard going on. I about a week away from starting my planking on my Haven. Love the tip about the dividers. Interesting what you said about advise, weigh it and do what you where going to anyway. Well done with the air lines!! Fun seeing it on the boat this summer. It is a twisty turny tail.

Great job guys! Time spent in preparing infrastructure is never wasted. I've refitted three farm workshops over the years and on each one I've been asked the same question: "why so many electrical outlets and air line spigots?" until the first time the shop gets used in anger then people realise the benefits of no trailing leads / airlines.

When I started watching this episode it had been posted for 11 hours and there were 338 comments listed! Man you guys are doing great. This episode was full of fun things. You need a friend that does drywall taping to do the dolphinite on the rabbet. They can spread mud like nobody else. It was nice to see someone using a yankee screw driver. Haven't seen one of those in a long time even though they are extremely handy. Just be careful you don't get your finger tips between the chuck and the handle as it will leave one heck of a blood blister. Great work on this whole episode from the Arabella team.l Thanks ladies and gentlemen. Have a great weekend.

I have to say, I admire the way you "get there in the end". A team of "pro" boat builders, with years of experience, would no doubt, have wrung that garboard's neck and bent it to there will in short order. That is not the point. I've seen enough to know, you two will get the job done, in time, and it will be a splendid vessel, of which you will be justly proud.

I still have a brace with ratchet and a small collection of bits including a blade screw driver or two for it that my grandad gave me almost 50 yrs ago. I learned to use it and importantly to sharpen the bits under his guidance. Sadly it never gets used anymore as I have mains power and battery drills to do the work and there are precious few fasteners around which don't have Phillips or hex heads. Seeing one in use to tighten in your bronze screws brings back memories. Thanks for that.
@robinturner23005 жыл бұрын
David Robinson I bought my spiral ratchet screwdriver , brace and bits 50 years ago and was pleased to see these tools being used on Arabella. I do still use mine especially but not exclusively for slotted head screws and where I want the feel that it gives me. This is especially true when using brass or bronze screws in oak when it would be a real pain if you snap one off. Impact drivers etc have their place but where you want finesse old school takes some beating.

Another well done video gentlemen. Thank you for allowing us to go on this journey with you. I admire your amazing patience with the process and taking the time to ensure everything is just right before you move on to the next step. I'm sure that at times you're tempted to accept a lesser standard but instead you discipline yourselves to stay the course and produce quality results. I love woodworking and I find time in my shop making sawdust to be very therapeutic and I can tell by your videos that while you face frustrations from time to time you too find comfort in your passion for Arabella and the process of building her. This soothing tone really resonated as I watched this video. Big kudos to Ben for the musical score at the end of the video. The guitar piece at the end of the video was great. Keep up the good work lads. You've got a winner going here. All the best to you all. Cheers and God speed Alex, Steve, and team!

Next week - the larboard garboard? Q- why is the forward leading edge of the garboard not faired completely into the bedding? Looks like it is a good half-inch hanging out. Great series - always look forward to seeing each week's episode. Really admire you for the way you attend to detail and your organizational planning. That you've done this along a residential street in makeshift surroundings...love the entire series. The music is stellar as well.

That's a strong-looking garboard plank. It gives me an even better feeling about the strength of the whole structure. It's a tank! I'm curious to see how you fair it. Plus, there's that raised part of the keel timber below the rabbet line that I'm curious about. I assume you'll take some wood off of that, too. I'll find out soon enough... I like the Thad Danielson episodes. There seems to be a good vibe with him. Pretty laid back. The shots of Akiva are nice. He's a very busy dog. Always alert, always working. Nothing would get by him. That's his boat shop. But he does let others into the pack. Either that or he doesn't mind taking a short break from his duties for some attention and petting. Then back to work as the eyes and nose of the shop.
@charles.neuman18 Жыл бұрын
P.S. I was wondering about that question mentioned at the very end: is it TOO stiff? I'm not concerned about the boat "breaking" per se, but I have wondered whether it allows for the natural movement of the wood. I think it does (from my non-professional opinion). It's extremely stiff where it matters: at the keel and floors. But I think the frames and upper planks will have room to "breathe". It's not like you sheathed the whole thing in fiberglass!
