Arabella's keel area is looking mighty strong now. I love watching the network of bow and stern and frames, floors, knees and planks all coming together into one skeleton like structure, getting stronger with each new element, it makes me feel happy :) Happy Christmas to you all!

All my woodworking experience is with old houses. I know how a small error can multiply over distance. However, houses (mostly) stand still. You're dealing with a beast that flexes with the seas. I can only imagine the challenges. Your slow, meticulous approach is the only way to go. You roped me in before the ballast keel had been poured. Your production quality and content continue to amaze with improvements I had not foreseen as possibilities. Excellent, outstanding work in all respects!

In addition to your continuing craftsmanship and problem solving, the new intro, cinematography and video continuity are FANTASTIC!! Watching the project from the keel pouring I am amazed at the work you've put in, and what it must have taken "back in the day" to build boats without modern tools and appliances.

Great seeing the garboards in place. They look smooth down the line of the ship. They look to have been fit really well. It took that tree a hundred years to grow, now its going to take some time for it to get comfortable in it's new position. Nice job guys.

Fantastic work chaps,, I am totally addicted to your project and although have seen some of the latest episodes, I have started right at the beginning and am now up to this episode. As an engineer, I love the way you show and describe all the different tools and the quality of your workmanship, and as for Akiva, she is so laid back and keeps an eye on you all, wonderful. here in the UK we are used to rain but yours is something else, if you could invent a "rain turbine" you could get some free electricity...ha ha.

As I watch this series I think about how the ancient civilizations built amazing ships. Peoples like the Greeks, Carthaginians and to a lesser extent the Romans built ships without any power tools. Even the Vikings did, later the great ships of European countries like England, France and Spain sailing across the the oceans with them. It just amazes me how you guys did this and to think about the ancient people doing it is awe inspiring. Keep on going I am thoroughly enjoying this. I did work on a double-ender similar to this boat many years ago but the owner's work was not up to this quality and craftsmanship.

And to think all this work has been done for thousands of years without any machines always blows my mind.

@@ariebenschop4632 get it close and let it swell once in the water; would be my guess. Also, several people bailing the water out while the timbers swell up.
@ryanjuntunen81345 жыл бұрын
@@ariebenschop4632 Why do you say that? Fitting planks like this isn't a new technique. People have been making wooden boats for thousands of years. Of course the styles and techniques have changed over the centuries, but fitting a piece of wood to another is not a modern concept, neither is the skill required to do it well. Precision and perfectionism is what allowed the Egyptians, Romans, Japanese, Mayans, and every other empire to build the things they built. Japanese pagodas are a perfect example. Even the violin requires precise handwork to fit the bass bar and to carve the scroll, both of which have been used in instruments far longer than the 500 years the violin has existed, and both of which are done with nothing more than a knife, scraper, and plane (even today). There are a ton of examples you could list (Pumapunku, Machu Picchu, Roman Aqueducts, the Great Pyramids), but the idea that the ability to measure something and then precisely fit an object to it, even something as complex as a boat, is a modern ability seems to be pretty common. It's a shame that even though Stephen and Alix are showing the work and skill that went into a project like this for centuries, people still don't realize that people have been able to make complex things with a high level of precision for many thousands of years.
@ariebenschop46325 жыл бұрын
@@ryanjuntunen8134 I'm not saying they didn't have the capability to do it... And of course it's the same technique. But just not every wooden boat is built like a violin 😉 because there wasn't always the time to do that. This is a 'hobby' project, but back in the day they just needed to make boats to go fishing or make war or whatever. They needed the job done quick, sometimes at least

Hi guys.... I enjoy watching your “slow magic” as I’ve always called it having been a boatwright for uncounted years before I became an RN and am now retired. As I watch you use an adze and planes etc, I’ve wondered if you ever use disc sanders at all. My favorite tool was my 8” disc sander as well as a 4” Mikita. Am just curious. It seems that with the right touch the disc sanders would be a bit quicker and, from my experience, accurate. I must say that I am impressed by your use of the adze etc.... You guys are doing what so many of us love. And we live vicariously through You. THANK YOU! Tim Kerr, Eureka, CA. I am proud and pleased to be a sponsor of Arabella!
