WOW. Bertie Carvel is superb. His nuanced portrayal of Dalgliesh is spot on and the best I’ve seen. Bravo. I‘ve watched it 3 times already and see something new each time.

I'm enjoying this new series and now I'm going to read P.D. James' books. I hope the cast and crew are making more of these because I want to see more. They're very well done.

I ordered all her books from 2nd hand websites. While each book is freestanding, It's good to start from the beginning with Cover Her Face (published in 1962 when she was 42) as Dalgliesh himself is revealed slowly over the series. She is the Henry James of the dectective novel, and was related to him. She is not an "action" writer. She was interested in the psychology of the crime and it's impact on the people affected by it. Her books are long and dense so settle in for a really good read. The books are packed with literary allusions and philosophy. Her descriptions of locations pull you right in to the story. Her characters are wonderfully developed...except for Dalgliesh. She gives him a great deal of privacy, forcing the reader to focus on the people and the crime rather than on Dalgliesh.

I loved this show. Bertie Carvel was fantastic, and he is usually playing a funny/awkward guy. It was so nice to see him play a serious/tragic character. Can't wait for Season 2.

I just watched it. I really liked it. It condensed the story down to the best cinematic form without being boring. PD James’ books are usually long and involved and need condensing for the screen. The 80’s miniseries was like 6 hours long with many of the side stories and side plot involved. This was good. I think it was an interesting choice to set it in the 70’s. The book was written in the 60’s I think. I can’t wait for the new stories to premiere. The trailer seems to show scenes from Nightingale and it looks like “The Black Tower” might be next.

I thought old fashioned cinema that squashed everything into under three hours was outdated. These days this should have been longer and more detailed, aimed at home experience viewing. It should have been better executed. This was a cop out. I felt this was an opportunity lost. Maybe it was made for people with attention span of a piece of rock. This felt like it was made 2000. It was at least fun finding all the mistakes they made about that era.

Not the best story to kick off the new Dalgliesh series. The series needs to up the poet/detective dynamic, and get rid of his assistant who insists on wearing off-the peg C&A suits.

The only problem when you lived through that time you see all the mistakes. I thought we were moving away from old fashioned cinema. Squash everything in vibe. I thought we would have better than old style cinema and have a detailed long series.

I have watched this series, whilst I like the settings and stories, I am also aware of a theme running through the last four episodes that seems to me to be a bit jarring and wrong. Having watched the TV show, Bent Coppers, the issue of racism in the police (a common attribute to the MET in the 1970s) is disturbingly white-washed in this series. Dalgleish seems to be man from the 21st century, rather than the 20th century in his attitudes, shaming another police officer for holding racist and sexist views about his mixed-raced colleague. Whilst I thought she was passing off as white in the Black Tower Episodes, it seems to me that they really wanted to push the whole idea of diversity in the police into a 1970s setting, Whilst there were certainly Black Police Officers in that period, they would have not likely have been women and would have been completely outnumbered by their white counterparts, as well as being unable to overcome a pretty racist culture amongst them. Dalgleish would not have had those anti-racist attitudes in a 1970s setting, because it would not have conformed well to the culture of the Force. I am in my 20s so can't say what it was like then, but know that any attempt to white-wash racism in police dramas set historically, or have unrealistic ethnic characters, seems to me to be an insult to those who tried to fight racism then by saying that the UK wasn't a racist country in the late twentieth century.

I'm all for diverse casting but I wish we'd stop rose washing history and keep historical dramas to some degree of historically accuracy. Watching period dramas aiming for realism, where everyone is progressive and people of colour are in positions that they were categorically denied in real life - is the most unrealistic thing and ignores the struggles minorities went through to get to where we are now. I don't mind it in things like Bridgerton which is pure sugarcoated fantasy but when I see it in the Alienist and other shows purporting to be realistic to their period - it takes me out of the show. By all means cast POC characters in roles but show life as it was, not as you wanted it to be.
@h.j7469 Жыл бұрын
@@blossom___blossom___blossom I think your being a bit to generous to Bridgerton, even if it is a fantasy. I would love to see some dramas about the African or Indian empires before colonisation by the British Their histories are pretty fascinating. We like to talk about decolonising history, but we really should do some shows about these periods that reflect archaeological and scholarly evidence that we know soo far.

I have to say I am a bit disappointed with this series. I loved the books and the original tv series although fairly long it really fleshed out all the characters and made for interesting viewing. This series feels like a lot of the drama was left on the cutting room floor you don’t really get to know the characters backgrounds. I guess if a person had not read the books or seen the old series with Roy Marsden it could be enjoyable.

Unfamiliar with the IP. The first two-episode story fell into the classic detective show blunder of making the red herring suspect far too suspicious-looking, and the murderer character too pretty, sensible, and likeable. She stuck out like a thumb, and the story slowly came around to tell me what already had to be true. Also, the plot nowhere near justified two episodes (do they ever?), and these TV detectives all come off as largely same-y -- clever, misunderstood, skeletons, yawn. There's still room for this show to be alright, but not the best foot forward.
