I used my first Acorn (the BBC B) at Junior school in the early 80s and have followed them since. We had a beeb, A3000 and later a RiscPC at home and I took an upgraded A3010 to Uni. This exhibition was a brilliant day out (attended with my dad and son) and I even managed to find my d-block on the Doomsday system. My son enjoyed playing some of the games, a pacman clone on the Atom, Chuckie Egg and Granny's Garden on the BBC B and Zarch on the Archimedes. Having such a hands on environment makes the items on show makes them much more 'real'. Well worth the 2.5 hour each way trip.

The BBC is 40 years old this year. I have a NEW really good BBC competition pro style Joystick, on eBay that are only £50! (not like £100 like old BBC competition pros go for) - celebrate in style. Works great - I just completed Airwolf with it after 40 years! Really responsive. My BBC Master is even more cherished now I can really get good with games!!:)))

I attended a school for Blind children in the early 90s and we had some BBC Master computers and I think they all had touch screens, they may have been the same model as the one you showed where you drew the smiley face.

What a absolutely fantastic day. Went with my 5 year old, my 30 year old cousin, my self 42 and uncle 60ish. So covering all the years of Acorn. Will have to try and get myself a beeb for home now... get my son playing a real computer. Think I spoke to you at the end after 5pm on Sunday. Will Defford visit again. I hope you make the Acorn World bit Annual

Thanks :) Appreciate the kind words! We'll definitely be doing it again ... If you could leave the museum a review on Trip Advisor we would really appreciate it. Thanks!

I love the big red triangle sticker on the bottom of the Communicator. It shows it was prohibited from use with BT telephone networks, which means they wouldn't have made many sales in the UK.

There was demand for the Electron in Xmas 1983, but problems with the manufacturing of the ULA meant that Acorn couldn't produce machines in sufficient quantities to meet it. These had been overcome by the following year, but by this time the market for home computers was already saturated and consumer interest had waned. If the rollout of the Electron had gone as planned in 1983, the fortunes of the machine, and of Acorn itself, could have been much different.

Yes it is. Coded by Geoff Crammond, creator of Revs and Formula One GP (World Circuit Racing), This game came out in 1986 (I think!).

Could we get a video on the Acorn Communicator? Like what it looked like from the inside, how it worked and so on. Unless I'm mistaken and I'm going from memory here, it's got the 65816 CPU instead of the regular 6502. So I'm curious about things like whether you could BBC Basic on it, use more memory with it or run code faster.

The one is the video is my Communicator, I've taken some video of it here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6S2nWCPoKunfqs Beebmaster took some photos at the wakefield show. www.beebmaster.co.uk/Shows/Communicator.html Jonathan took a copy of the roms and a mame emulation is in progress. stardot.org.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=11425&start=30

Why is this exhibition open for only 2 days? What a shame. I wish I could go but I'm in Liverpool! Buggers! :)

What is being displayed at 24:43? Is it a game? Or visuals for a TV show?
@TheCentreforComputingHistory7 жыл бұрын
Visuals for a game show ... watch this space. We've got a brilliant video all about this coming soon ... :)

I did wonder, I had images from an old 90s game show that used "games" that people could play to get points, in my head for years. I'm wondering if this is it because it looks similar. I'll be sure to catch your video. BTW, excellent content! This is a fascinating trip through British computing in the 80s!

Isn't the lack of user port etc on the Beeb issue 1 because it is a model A?
@TheCentreforComputingHistory7 жыл бұрын
Yes it was a Model A ... Although it looks like they partially upgraded it to Model B by upgrading the RAM to 32k.
