From what I can tell it’s mostly 4/4 but there’s rhythms with duplet and triplet pulses laid over one another. I know there’s a more precise way to articulate that, but it’s been a million years since I took music theory.

Right on man! I’m way out of practice on my musical theory, but it’s fascinating what they can do with the rhythms and accents over the bar lines! It really makes me take in the music as a listener as I can’t analyze what is happening!

@@StanDotsethMusic I’m a drummer and a very rhythmically oriented person in general, so sadly I have to actively turn off the impulse to analyze rhythmically complex stuff because in college that was informally drilled into our heads as a competitive thing (amongst drummers). I hear stuff like this and I’m like “aha, a challenge is it???” Anyway, really dig the channel. Keep it up!

@@caseyrogers573 I love it! I have a harder time with crazy rhythms, and totally relate on how you hear it. For me it’s the harmony, chords and melodies that become a game :)

I know Im gonna get crucified for this by the djent/prog kids but after years of listening to AAL and waiting for them to write emotive music I just can't stay into their material. It is always very technically impressive and I will never say they aren't awe inspiring musicians but their output just feels like emotionless riff salad to me. There are some really cool rhythmic ideas and some cool licks in there...Gartska's drumming is phenomenal but at the end of the song I cannot remember much of it. The constituent parts are great but combined its just "hey look at what I can do"and It just gets a "that was cool" and then its gone. I want it to resonate with me but it just....doesnt.

Have you only listened to their heavier stuff over the years? Or have you listened Songs like Brain Dance, The Glass Bridge, Para Mexer, On Impulse, Odessa and can't feel the emotion they are trying to convey? AAL has been pretty versatile so to call their music riff salad just sounds like you haven't actually listened to some of their compositions as a whole.
