MARTIN J-40 JUMBO
Classic styling with a tight-waisted jumbo body shape, the J-40 acoustic guitar has solid East Indian rosewood back and sides, Sitka spruce top, polished gloss finish and a hand-fit dovetail neck joint. It produces a tone that is beautifully balanced with powerful response and volume, enhancing the art of the singer-songwriter. An absolute power house of a guitar. Comes complete with a Martin hard case.

Finally, someone who can actually tune a J40 BEFORE doing a demo! Sweet. Wish I could play my J40 that well. Thank you!

@@marksoftime Congratulations and welcome to the club! I have a new (to me)1995 J-40 with standard bracing. I've had it for two weeks and still believe it is, "The One." On my guitar the finger picking sweet spot for the most volume and overtones resides over the sound hole near the end of the fret board. An inch from there is another sweet spot above the fret board hovering around the last fret which has more overtones with less volume. I'm not sure where sweet spot locations are located on the new "Re-imagined" J-40's with the forward shifted bracing but it doesn't take long to find them.

I just found and bought a 2018 like-new one! Haven't even got it yet! I'm selling a 2002 OM 21 and a GPC14f to offset the J40 cost!

I play a J-40 as part of an acoustic duo. She's about 9 years old..really settled into wonderful overtones with insane projection and sustain. I chased different strings, but ended up coming back to Martin's acoustic series. Interesting when you look at the specs and compare it to the legendary D-45, outside the different neck inlays, the other dimensions, tone woods, neck shape, etc, are identical. Even the bout depth is the same. The differences are that the J-40 is slightly longer,..and the case width is just a bit wider. I couldn't see spending another 6K for a D-45. I won't ever leave this guitar....

I have one, lefty, 10yrs old. It is great. I can't really understand why they're not more popular. I think calling them 'jumbos' may have put people off. They don't feel big. They're more comfortable than a dreadnought due to the narrow waist. Mine needed a neck reset after 8 years, but that's the nature of Martins. If it were half-hinched, I'd buy another (although they're 20% more expensive now than 10 years ago!). I'd like to think that if John Fahey were still with us, he'd play one.

Yes, I think you're right. "Jumbo" should be called "Awesome", and their popularity will skyrocket.

Or "Jumbos" should be called "Grand Auditoriums" or something similar (hope that doesn't sound too much like a Taylor!).

I have a 30 year old HD28 and a Marty Stewart commemorative from 96 I believe and neither instrument requires a neck reset. I'm not sure where this myth originated but Martin's are no more susceptible to neck resets than any guitar.

The J model and the M model have the same dimensions EXCEPT for depth, were the J is 5/8ths inch deeper on the upper bout, and 3/8ths inch deeper on lower.

They're both great guitars. The Jumbo has a little bit more, especially in the bass, but the M-36 still has incredible balance with plenty of bass for "most" players (I've owned a J-40, now have two custom shop J's, and also own an M-36, all lefty).

Michael McInnis this is the older model and not the 2018. I own the 2018 and the tuners are different. Here you can see they’re the closed back, standard tuners. The 2018 has the open back ones.
