Thanks for this. I find that more folks are being hired as chaplains without completing ACPE CPE, and thus lack the competencies of that solid process and preparation. Institutions, please know the depth of quality and formation that a chaplain candidate who has completed ACPE CPE has, and that a board-certified chaplain with ACP, NAJC, or NACC has. Your patients and staff deserve the best.

You are correct about the the level of training that goes into CPE. I only wish The pay would match the training and qualification. An M-Div; almost 1400 hrs of free work ( for those who take 1 unit at a time), the mental and psychological work that goes into divesting oneself of generational junk, combine with the insultS from incompetent young inexperienced Doctors who thinks they know it all required a lot more than $21 an hr. Than over that some medical institutions are very selective about the color of the person they hire and how much that person gets paid.

ACPE is not THE STANDARD. That is a self-proclaimed status. I am board certified with APC and CPSP and a CPE supervisor. I have 20 years of leadership in healthcare chaplaincy. I have found that CPSP is more advanced in their training competencies. You get what ACPE provides but more psychodynamic training. In addition hospitals with ACPE centers practice discriminatory hiring practices that only hire ACPE/APC chaplains. I sit on APC certifying boards and I would not certify half of the people chaplains that we push through. CPSP has higher competencies standards than APC so I just agree with the consensus.
