An 83 day, 1700 kilometre canoe expedition across the seldom explored Labrador wild. Presented as a docuseries. This is episode #1. There are 6 episodes.
Full series playlist: • DOCUSERIES: Across Lab...
At 1.4 million km², the Labrador Peninsula is one of the last great wilderness areas on the planet. In 2018 I set a goal to cross its width by canoe.
From the Labrador Sea to Hudson Bay it was an estimated 1700 kilometre journey that would last 83 days.
With only my dog Saku, I would travel, up and down remote rivers, across enormous lakes, and over portages that were littered with both beauty and danger.
We would witness and camp in wilderness that few, if any, have ever seen and rewind back to a time when life was simpler.
Along the way I filmed our experiences. Now, in a docuseries format, we bring it to life for you, right here on KZbin.
Don't forget to subscribe and hit the bell for notifications so you don't miss any of the action and please tell your outdoor loving friends. Thanks for watching!

Man. This brings me back to my youth. Doing 350km or more three week trips in the middle of Quebec in an old 85 pound aluminum Grumman Canoe and an old canvas pack. I even had a black lab with a white crest named Ruby along for the ride for company and warmth. Never seen a dog tree more black bears than her. I could almost taste the sand in the tea and feel it in my sleeping bag while watching this. Not to mention that soaked to the bone feeling from paddling for hours in the pouring rain. Very few people know that incredible feeling at the end of the day when you're muscles burst with ache and you crawl into that dry sleeping bag inside the warm tent. Paradise. I was even jealous of those palm blisters in your hand from working the paddle all day long until they hardened like leather baseball gloves after the first week or so. So glad I watched this. Oh to be young again. You're living the good life lad. Enjoy every minute of it.

Not only are you battling the rivers but those storms were crazy... when I seen you setting up your tent so close to the river I had a gut feeling that that could happen and it did... The challenges you must have faced and overcome cannot be understated, its hard world out there and you pushed through every inch of it. Congrats brother, there aren't many people in the history of the world that have seen the beauty you have, that my friend, is the rarest of gifts. Godspeed brother!

Justin you are truly a modern explorer, may I add a note that in 1936 my Father Newfoundland Ranger #25 traveled from Okak north of Nain, to cartwright and back , a distance of 1,400 miles by dog sled carrying a body for an autopsy, the trip took over 2 months. I am looking forward to this series thank you.

Brought back a lot of memories of bygone years. In the early seventies I did medical clinics in NW river twice a year, that was the era of cable car crossing the river. Also remover a number of moose hunting trips into granite and Victoria lake, on a road in through Miller town that often did a bad job on our camping equipment. While living on the west coast and northern peninsula my wife and i spent the best part of fifteen years canoeing, salmon fishing and camping in the main brook and rodickton systems. Keep up the good work, looking forward to seeing your next posting. Dan

I'm stuck in southern California city life... blessing and a curse, but I love the outdoors, have been to Alaska a few times with my grandparents when I was young (not saying it's exactly the same as newfoundland, but reminds me of it) and want to bring my 7 yo daughter back someday, hopefully many times... Long story short, watching your videos brings me back, brings back the emotions and feelings of being there, stuck in tricky spots while we were canoeing, encountering bears, the beautiful untouched wilderness, the bugs, the plants, the trees, the views, The extreme tides, the unfamiliar schedule of the sunlight and short nights. Your videos evoke emotion for me, so thank you... And of course Saku. Great job on your content, I know that it adds a lot of extra work to your exploration, but sharing with the world is truly beneficial.

WOW, rugged and so beautiful in that black bear country. Hoping it gets a bit easier for you and Saku. A water dog extraordinar! You both exhaust me after an hour or so. Also, it's nice to know the decisions you make for yours and Saku well being is great and a relief! Better safe the sorry my father always said to me while escaping beyond our back yard which was thousands of arcers of forests in every direction with lakes, rivers, creeks and wildlife that I love, love, love to this day. The most Northern parts of California. I could ski in the morning, day and be on the beaches in the afternoon. I always thought, a cool combo but never wanted to life there. Higher elevations is where my mind and body sings! Less humans, more wildlife, the better I like it. Once we know the ways and character of the wild the safer I feel among them.Jeessh, enough about me, Thanks for the ride, Justin!! Blessings, BE safe, BE well, Keep on, Keppin On....... (smiling)

Incredible first installment of what promises to be an exciting series! I actually got your book for Christmas but I would love a copy for my grandfather. He was born in St. Anthony in 1935 as a British citizen. He'll be 85 this year and sadly, was recently diagnosed with cancer. He hasn't been to Newfoundland in years and it's doubtful that he'll make it back in this life. I think he'd really enjoy your book and I'll certainly be sharing my copy with him. Looking forward to the next video!

I'm seeing a side of Saku that i've apparently not fully noticed until now - he's really matured into a fine, strong adult dog. He seems to be getting around like a real wilderness canine athlete at peak performance; almost a bit wolf-like sometimes! It's obvious that you are taking great care of his nutritional needs. That Inukshuk dog food must be some kickin' stuff. Lovin' the series A LOT!

Justin, fricken amazing brother. Watching that bank erode and the rain as well as the river flow after was crazy. Saku is also amazing to have on the trip. MSR Hubba Hubba one year saved us, a storm rolled in and water around the tub was 6" and we stayed dry in the tent.At 32:41 that drop in the water is all too familiar when lining, and its, dont let go of the canoe....that canoe as well is trooper Justin....looking forward to the rest of the trip.....Fred ,Thunder Bay,Ontario

Not gonna lie, watching this is very emotional for me! For having traveled by kayak in the area myself about 8 years ago, a dog in less and starting from the sea (in Minganie, Quebec), watching this is something very special! Had to put aside the adventurer side of me for a while in order to make a living, and now to see to free like that, with your dog on top of it... just wow! I'm so envious my brother! Just found your channel and I'm barely 12 minutes in, but I had to pause and express my gratitude for that video! Also as a side note, I don't understand how you managed to film it all, while in a boat, while having to deal with a dog on top of it! Props to you for that alone! Can't wait to watch the whole thing!

Looks to be a great series, can't wait for the next episode! Ps: What happened to your tooth that first night? It's there at 7:45 and gone at 11:35?

A grand start my friend. Funny thing. I live in a big river area. And when it was pouring down I though "he`ll be lucky if he aint got his toes in the water come morning" Ha sure enough. LOL. I`d like to ask why you choose to start down river. But then again, where would be the adventure in making it easy eh?
@JustinBarbournlexplorer

If you plan on travelling a long distance in a canoe the old way eventually you have to go up a river to go done the next. May as well start that way. Thanks for watching Craig!

Thank you for sharing your adventure. 20 years ago I was part of an expedition of Cadets (Canadian and UK) and Junior Rangers that paddled across Northern Quebec. 500km from Hudson bay to Ungava Bay. Brings back fond Memories

@@JustinBarbournlexplorer it was an awesome trip, the majority of the trip was on Lac Minto and Rivière des Feuilles. A few smaller rivers between Hudson Bay and Lac Minto. Trip was from north of Umijuaq to Tasiujaq.

I, like many others, have been patiently waiting for this series and with just the first episode, you certainly delivered. I love the outdoors but could never envision doing a trip such as this. That's what makes it so great to be able to tag along with you and Saku. Why you do not have 4 times the subscribers is amazing to me. Well done and thanks. Cannot wait for the next one. All the best....

You are a beast. Most men would just have turned their canoes around and went back down the river. Watched enough of your videos to know that's not happening. Great starting episode. Saku rocks.
