Hezu, about Gwen’s “inconsistency” regarding her behavior, it’s actually common to switch how you act in certain settings, you could be ignored, abused and disrespected, depressed, gloomy, Etc when in school, while your bundle of sunshine at home, you could be an actor who’s happy on set, rude off set, also I think the movie did a great job showing how she’s really conflicted, how she switches up between doing one thing and being mad or frustrated about another, she’s trying to be a good friend to Miles and make him happy while trying to stay in the Spider Society, when she can’t do both because they’re opposing natures and she had to choose which one, except she couldn’t, because Miguel in his frustration and already harbored resentment towards Gwen and Miles, kicks her out in a moment of frustration and bias, also at 12:11 I think of it more as side effects of Spider-Verse 1, rather than “imploding in on itself”, 34:22 I view it in my opinion that the universe is kinda like a mug, it can be broken, unfixable, some are fragile, some are stronger, but you can put the pieces back together, it can maintain its shape without it being broken forever, Earth 42 is a broken mug that compensated itself from collapsing on itself, and mapped itself out from there, if the mug however is too broken, it can’t be fixed, 2099 broken the world’s mug and now it can’t be fixed, if Miles tries to save his dad as an anomaly, then he can’t fix his world after that, it is what it is and Miles believes he can fix it, but Miguel doesn’t

The Parental Themes hit home especially for Hispanic / Latino viewers because family is so important. But also, Spider-Man comics were always about the relationships / regular life of the character beneath the mask. Where the first film was moreso focused on Miles and his dad and Uncle, his black heritage & how black family is like, this film focused on his Hispanic heritage & his relationship with his mom. But also emphasizing how, for us Latinos at least, family is more than just blood or even culture. You dont need be Latino / Hispanic to be included in family. Nor does being half non Latino make you less so. Rio is speaking to Miles about general growth and life stuff but its also as much reflective of culture. Miles wishes to be more independent & Rio is coming to terms accepting that when, in Latino families, closeness is emphasized. We help each other out, stay in contact, etc. Also the emphasis on family and how you can have both found and blood family I think hits home Hispanic families even harder. Miles has foundish family with fellow Spider people like Gwen, Hobie, and Peter. They have found families with each other especially the more isolatef Spiders. But they still have non Spider loved ones. What they fight for is their families & friends. Thats why parental figures & family is emphasized. What interest would thete be in a superhero with nothing to fight and put your all for?

Correction: Gwen isn't mad that Miguel wasn't "hard enough" on Miles, she's mad because Miguel was handling the situation the wrong way from the get-go. Miguel was straight up aggressive with Miles because he believes the boy to be an anomaly. Gwen believed that maybe she could convince Miguel to take a different approach by meeting with Miles, but Miguel, stubborn in his ways, tries to control Miles for his own agenda. And then, when Gwen confronts Miguel about his behavior towards Miles, she wounds his ego by saying they were "supposed to be the good guys". This shows that even though Gwen made some rash decisions, she still cares about Miles and wants the best for him.
@silverbells24 Жыл бұрын
I can agree with this! Bro was really throwing dukes with a fucking teenager. But yeah, I felt Miguel was just an egotistical asshole the whole 2nd half of the film. I liked Miguel in the first 10 minutes of the film, but suddenly, he switched from a badass to a jerkass in the span of a couple hours or weeks "idk how time works in the spider society". But yeah, Gwen made some weird decisions, but in the end, she still tried everything to defend Miles despite Miguel literally attempting to murder the guy multiple times.
@joeprovo3627 Жыл бұрын
@silverhawk23 Yeah, you get it. Miguel was literally telling Miles not to save his dad, and when he doesn't get the answer he wants, he gets mad and attempts to beat the kid into submission until he loses him. That's not what a spider-man should do. That's not an ideal Spider-Man would strive for. And there's also a bunch more evidence, both overt and subtle, to support how Miguel himself doesn't fully understand how the spiderverse works.
@LauraM96829 Жыл бұрын
I think the inconsistency in how the canon works is meant to indicate that Miguel’s thinking towards Canon Events and Anomalies is incredibly flawed and mainly him projecting his own trauma. As you said, Pavitr’s dimension collapsing could be entirely because of the Spot, and it just happened to occur after Miles saved the inspector. But Miguel insists it’s because it’s the cannon and doesn’t even entertain the possibility when Miles brings it up. And if Miles isn’t supposed to be Spider-Man, why does it matter if he breaks his own canon or not. Likewise, Mayday shouldn’t even exist, since according to Miguel, if Miles wasn’t bitten, the collider would’ve been destroyed before it went off, and Miles and Peter B would never had met. Peter B states that he only had Mayday because of Miles. So if Miles is an anomaly, then that means his influence on Peter B’s life should’ve also meant his universe should’ve collapsed like Pavitr’s. I think it’s more that Miguel is so driven by guilt and trauma, he’s catastrophizing everything. In reality, he might not fully understand or know what caused the universe with his daughter to collapse, and is just running with the first theory that makes sense, while ignoring some of the obvious evidence that says that the canon isn’t entirely set in stone. It also explains why he is so insistent that Miles not break the cannon, even though he doesn’t even view Miles as a Spider-Man. I think when he sees Miles trying to say he can do both, he’s reminded of himself trying to have it all with his family, and is projecting all his guilt and self hatred onto Miles. My personal theory is that breaking the canon events comes down to who it is doing the breaking. Miguel replacing himself and Miles saving Pavitr’s captain was harmful because they were outsiders directly influencing events as they happened. But something like Gwen’s dad quitting, Miles being Spider-Man, and Peter B having Mayday are fine because they were the results of actions made by Spider people in their native universes. Even though Gwen and Peter B were inspired by Miles, it was ultimately their own actions and choices that changed the course of their stories.

I enjoyed this video a lot! Still, I really disagree about the parenthood themes being too much. It was a major theme of the film--take it away, and there's still lots of stuff about Gwen and spider society and Miles uncovering things, but the parenthood thing really provides a consistent thematic through line in a way that I don't think anything else quite does. On top of that, I think it's really important to have those scenes to establish the parents as people. And a really good way to show humanity is to show a character's struggle. If we don't spend a good chunk of time with them, the only reason we would care about their safety is because of the way it would affect their kids (which could work just fine in some stories, but I don't think would have been enough in a trilogy like this). We got to know Miles' dad in the first movie, but his mom was almost not even there, so giving her the majority of parenthood scenes in this film makes sense. Tie that in with the scenes with Miles' dad, Gwen's dad, Peter B., and heck, why not throw Uncle Aaron and Jessica Drew in there too, and we get (in my opinion) a really interesting spectrum of authority figures and support systems! You said that most of Miles' issues with his parents could be resolved by them knowing that he's Spider-Man. Put aside the legitimate worries they might have about his safety and the restrictions they might put on him because of it, I don't know that it would solve everything. Look at Peter B.--he knows everything! He can fully sympathize with Miles! But that doesn't mean there aren't still issues and mistrust between them. So many movies aimed at a younger demographic paint parents as overbearing and unreasonable, and when they show a sympathetic side, they do so without dwelling too heavily on the parents' motivations. Parenting is hard. Relationships with your kids are tough to navigate, especially when they're teenagers and you're having to constantly renegotiate the power balance because they really need support and encouragement but they're also kinda dumb and lack a lot of experience (but they're constantly gaining more experience and becoming better at navigating life!). I think parents and older adults can relate to harsh but sympathetic parents (like Stoick from How to Train Your Dragon) by putting together the pieces and using their experience, and I'm sure some kids can too. But I also think it's really refreshing to have a movie lay that struggle out clearly in a way that clearly shows the parents' thoughts and feelings to the kids in the audience. My mom told me a lot of stuff as a teenager that I didn't really get at the time, but it makes total sense now. Movies are special because they can give you a way to depersonalize and sympathize with a parent when it might be hard or confusing to do that in your own life because it's so emotionally charged. In conclusion, yes. I think the parenting themes were explicit and could maybe even be perceived as a bit heavy-handed. I totally understand not jiving with those parts and wishing the movie was more focused on the stuff you did jive with. However, I think it was a good thing to have at least one major scene focused on each of the major parental figures in the film, and I think comparing those scenes would even result in a lot of neat parallels and messages I didn't get into here. I think it deserves to be examined and discussed as much as any of the other major themes in the film. I've seen a lot of the sentiments about parenting play out in real life, and my hunch is that a lot of other people have too, and will have something really neat to relate to or learn from! I feel like I could've written a whole essay about this (kinda did... oh well. I could make it a lot longer, maybe I will when I have more time lol) so I'm sure I missed a lot.

29:09 I'd say the theme of the movie is also about belonging. Gwen trying to find a place where she fits in, her “band.” (and in the end, she starts her own - she makes herself a place where she does fit in.) Miles wants to find somewhere where there's people he can talk to and relate to with his problems living a double-life (the spider-society) and also what rio said: “And he doesn't let ANYONE at those BIG FANCY PLACES he’s gonna be in… tell him he doesn't belong there.” and lastly, Miguel telling Miles “you don't belong. you NEVER did.” Parenting is a big part of the movie too, though - and I like how they show multiple sides of parenting. Gwen and her dad were more distant and had trouble communicating with one another, but they clearly love eachother deep down. Miles' parents are more supportive of him but also can be strict sometimes, they do try to listen to Miles but are still learning. Though.. I think Peter B's part with Mayday might be overdoing it. Another really fun thing is the little clues for the more observant about Miles being in the wrong universe. First of all the movie shows you he's going to Earth-42 when his earth is Earth-1016,a detail easy to miss if not paying close attention. Then we got the subtle differences,Miles' hoodie and jacket combo is green and purple instead of red and black,her mother's eyes are green instead of brown,she mentions Comic-Con when it was established there's no Comic-Con in Miles' universe,her reaction about Miles' hair,her reaction to his comment about his dad. The differences start building and building up until the terrifying reveal. Miles being so scared and Miles-42 probably being internally freaked out himself makes a lot of sense,and it even makes you think how truly dark what Miguel did (replace an alternate him who died) is. It's just fascinating,touching upon that uncanny territory that could be multiple you existing. I *love* it. I personally hope Miles-42 is indeed a vigilante who makes justice best as he can his own way,it honestly would kinda prove Miguel wrong on his assumption that dimension is completely unprotected,sure it means Earth-42 is basically Gotham but I don't mind the idea Miles-42 still has a good heart but he's been broken down by the world around him and yet got up as he always does,just with a different perspective

The idea is that Miguel is convinced that if terrible things don't happen to Spider-Man, the world ends... (E.G You can only be Spider-Man if you had an Uncle Ben figure who died, and that XYZ canon events happened...) I don't think anyone is arguing "Nothing bad should happen to Spider-Man, there should be no conflict in the story at all!" I think they're just saying... "Do we really need to adhere to the canon of 'dead relative pushes spider-person to become spider person" It's not saying that Peter Parker shouldn't have a dead Uncle, or that bad things shouldn't happen to Spider-Man, but that "Is a Spider-verse alt relativity spider-person without a dead Uncle Ben equivalent still Spider-man"... Im sure everyone else has talked about the cannon stuff already but i want to put my thoughts on it. My theory as to why miles's universe isnt gone is because the cannon events arent as set in stone as miguel makes them out to be. For instance, the moment that the spider bit miles is teleported into his universe, prowler miles's universe shouldn't exsit at that point. But yet it's still there and it's ruled by crime. And during the movie, peter b tells miles that he had mayday because of miles. If cannon events were supposed to be super connected, than peter's universe shouldve collapsed when he either had mayday or got back with mj. His story was supposed to be him being super down on his luck and never have anything good. But after meeting miles hes a proud dad and is proud to be spiderman. Now with all in that in mind, the reason why miguel talks about the cannon events like the way he does is because he understands that most spider people have to go through specific tramatic/amazing events in order for their universe to stay intact. However, not all of the events are all alike nor do they need to happen. The reason why miguel is so adamant about keeping the cannon intact is because of his experience messing with the cannon. He believes that because of the universe that was destroyed because he was in it, was a direct response for him messing with the cannon. Theres no true explanation as to why that universe collapsed and why the rest of the spiderverse hasnt collapsed. Miguels reasoning for stopping future anomalies for being in different universe's is because is him projecting his fears onto others. Thats why he's so dark and bruding with anger about everything. Hes a flawed character for a reason. He doesnt have the answers for everything but he thinks he does because he went through and experience that he believed was his fault. So in conclusion, cannon events aren't all black and white. We're ment to believe that because of miguel and his reasoning for creating the spider society. But in reality the cannon can be shifted.

Well, IDK the web that connects all the Spiderman is called "The Web of Life and Destiny" enfasis in DESTINY. Many things if you know the comics happened (Like Hobbie killing Norman Osborn, or Peny losing or her Family) Some other themes in this movie apart of parenthood, is about Destiny and the Changes, yet Miguel things about algorithms and other things

My favorite art styles were Hobie's and Gwen. Gwen with her Pastels repping the trans flag and reminding me of degas and her connection to the world of dance and ballet. As well as Hobie's, which perfectly encapsulated the look and feel of punk rock posters and DIY mags. Back in the day, punk rock bands would play in underground venues, and print their own posters, usually making a collage and xeroxing it, then coloring bits and pieces in whatever implements they had to color, before pasting them up all over town. Personally I love the chaotic and quick shifts in color, but I also love neons and the bright, strobing lights of 80s anime. Personally, I didn't think most of the accents were that thick, except Hobies, and that was worst during his intoduction, and I have audio processing issues, but also I've lived and/or worked in big cities surrounded by foreigners all my life, and got used to a ton of accents

Since the whole point of Miles story is that he doesn't need to be spider-man in the same way, in other words he doesn't need to follow what people view as Spider-man's cannon. It indicates that Miguel is wrong with the cannon's importance

31:08 thats a reference to the final panel of Spider-Man #50 aka “Spider-Man no more” which has become so iconic every variant has its own version, the story line (and i guess the cannon event in the movie) is that being a spider-person has become such a burden they just give up and throw the towel, but eventually realize how important Spider-Man/Woman is and dawn the webs again.

29:48 COGRATULATIONS YOU'RE ASKING ALL THE RIGHT QUESTIONS!! So. I've seen this being called Schröndinger's Plothole,as in,this may be the plot making no sense once you think about it hard enough *OR* it's all on purpose to make yo question Miguel's logic and how important Canon Events truly are. We know Miguel replaced someone from another dimension to be a father and feel happiness,this all went wrong and the dimension broke completely. My first question was always how long Miguel got to spend in that universe,cause it seems it was a while but allegedly Pavitr's universe started collapsing almost immediately (even if is most likely Spot's doing). Miles makes reasonable arguments that Miguel is simply obeying an AI and an algorithm telling him what supposedly must happen (meta commentary on the various story beats Spider-Man follows time and time again,even Miles himself with Uncle Aaron's death). Now if his Canon Events theory turns out to be incorrect and these aren't things that must happen no matter what,that leaves the question of what happened with that dimension Miguel went to,some explain it with the MCU bc it stablishes a thing about someone from another universe staying in the wrong universe too long or whatever but idk it's weird to bring MCU logic to a Sony product Anyway. Part of me feels the movie does want you to ask these questions. Ask what qualifies as an anomaly and what doesn't,ask why Pavitr's dimension was gonna be affected by something not meant to exist such as The Spot,ask how much can a Canon Event be stretched on its various requirements,and even ask why both Earth-42 and Earth-1016 have actually been okay,sure Earth-42 is a mess according to concept art sharing this universe is run by villains with only vigilante The Prowler there to do anything about it,but other than that they never started collapsing or anything I'm not saying Miguel is wrong or an idiot,personally I feel a lot of what he says makes sense (mostly if you truly see his perspective as a traumatized individual with huge amounts of guilt and regret on his shoulders) but maybe not even he knows everything,maybe he has misunderstood too and has only let paranoia and anger consume him. We'll have to see

Love the video- regarding the anomalies and canon events I’m fairly sure the point is that it doesn’t make sense the more you look at it. It’s not supposed to make sense because it doesn’t, all the imploding universes are caused by other things and are mistaken to be caused by anomalies. When gwen’s dad quits she has a look of realisation on her face which i think is supposed to be taken as her realising that canon events aren’t set in stone and can be prevented. Just my thoughts on it :)
@Rednetthall2 Жыл бұрын
Two things that point towards Miguel being full of: 1. If miles is the original anomaly but Peter b Parker has Mayday because of Miles doesn't mean that Mayday is also an anomaly? So is Miguel going to kill a baby to "stop universe from collapsing in on"? 2. A running theme with Miles about the fact that if you can't have your cake and eat it too then just bring two cakes. In some of the supplemental material it stated that prowler miles is actually a vigilante. Doing things like stealing medication from mega corpse. So in other words there's a good chance that Miles and prowler miles might work together because they are- "The two cakes"~

Migeul's projection is even more intresting, he's the biggest anomaly of all the spiderpeople, even more the miles in a way. He's the only spider-person who chose the job, and as he notes the only one who hates it. Everyone else was literally chosen by the spider, where he saw the need and took it upon himself. As for if migeul is a tragic hero or a villain....he's a tragic antagonist, he's wrong about canon, he fucked up, he doesn't want anyone else to fuck up like that, and no one else is even trying to answer the question of "universes are being lost". Also it's not a plot hole, he's wrong about why universes implode, he's just wrong.

For your point on canon events, in the movie itself they mention how they use an algorithmic model to predict events, giving a hint that it's not 100% accurate. I believe there's intentionally some discrepancies within the logic of them, as a setup for the resolution, where Miles proves that the canon doesn't exist and he in fact can save his dad. Also with Hobie the reason his colors are so inconsistent is because he even states in the movie that he doesn't believe in consistency. He's anti-establishment through and through, even to the point that each part if his body is animated at different frames per second to bring the point full circle. Lastly the focus on parenting was prevalent in the first movie as well, with Miles' strained relationship with his dad and the fact that approval from his father is what helped him become his own Spider-Man. Also the fact that Uncle Aaron and Peter B. Parker acted more like the father he wanted in different ways, but both missed key aspects that made Miles realize how much he loved his own dad. You also have Peter treating Miles like his own kid, making him want to have kids himself. Then with Kingpin his whole plan with the collider centered around him wanting to have his family back to properly father his son since he failed him and then he died. Familial bonds is a huge theme in these movies, and the sequel only just deepened the commentary by adding more nuance and maturity too it is all. Still a really solid review, just a few things I felt could give some insight.

I think all the parental Motifs were intentionally left in because as a movie for Miles it's sort of just the set up for the 2nd part he's even left on a cliff hanger, which I see as a nuisance. across the universe isn't about Miles' story not at first at least, the Spiderman across the universe Starts with Gwen's story and her story ends it the with her getting the band back together and reconciling with her Dad. Across the spiderverse is just as much about Gwen's loneliness and her communicating with her Dad as it is about Spots apotheosis (aren't you glad I didn't say Miles?)

To answer your question about universes without spiders, I don’t know if this holds true for the Spider-Verse movies, but in the comics, there are certain Multiversal constants; every universe has a Spider, every universe has a Captain (America), and every universe has a Tony Stark (not necessarily Iron Man).
@nightynight1479 Жыл бұрын
I actually have a small theory on why certain events (like Spot being around) and how the watches detect canons. In the film, Miguel explains the events with case files (which fun fact one of the case files is actually a reference to the original Spider-Man comics) meaning there are more than one type of canon event. I think what this means is that you don't exactly have to lose an uncle or someone like a Police chief to become Spider-Man, but across the ENTIRE Spider-Verse it is the one that happens the most so it's used as an example. I think that's also how the watches detect them too, by lining up events and matching it with previously established case files.
@nightynight1479 Жыл бұрын
Jeff (Miles's dad) is falling into the same situations other police chiefs have had in the past. So the watches detect that and give off the alarm that an event may or may not take place. Now I don't think the watches can detect WHICH event will take place because each universe is vastly different while also still being similar in many ways. I think that's also why Gwen was kinda sitting back not only a little lost but more importantly was out of the way until Miles dived in to help out Pavitar. Like she didn't exactly know what was taking place at that moment for Pav but knew she couldn't interfere.
@antoine1486 Жыл бұрын
I don’t think Gwen was saying to Miguel, “Maybe you weren’t hard enough in him (Miles)” in the sense of he should’ve been harder. She was calling out sarcastically how he was too hard on him which is why Miles couldn’t possibly receive his point of view. She was defending Miles through the whole conversation switching her persuasive techniques based on how Miguel reacted.

Really glad you liked the movie. I loved it too. So it´s easy to please me with it being the longest western animated movie. Just wow. I love the character work, how they interact, act diffrently, got layers. I do like the contrast between Miles goal in normal life and as Spider-man to Miquel. I am curious how this cannon thing is gonna be used. I am afraid becuse movies tends to have this in and not give a explanation or satesfying one. Sure it might look logical they have to follow cannon and Miquel notice what connects the Spider-people. But that´s why I find it wierd he meets anyone who have´t gone through most if not all thier cannon events. Did he tell Indian Spiderman? Did he think he could delay or prevent it when he decided to try both becuse either he loses Gayatri´s father or he loses her becuse she is his Gwen. I think most Spider-people can have some diffrence like how Peter in Gwen´s world is her Gwen lose but in Into the Spider-verse part of her backstory she mentioned how she saved her father so I actually I am not sure if Peter is her Uncle Ben moment. And sure maybe Miquel faked it becuse he did´t want to tell Miles that he was an anomoly or Miles by becoming Spider-man sort of carries the cannon he had his Uncle die. And it´s confusing too becuse they jump dimension but not time. Now I am willing to ignore some details becuse I am sure many of this earths are similar but in diffrent times. Peni was from 3000 I think she said. I don´t need it to make perfect sense but I like it to be explained enough. Many think Miquel on purpose lies or for some reason they are all blind to The Spot. Even after Mumbattan they still don´t prioretize him. So I am curious if Beyond will have Gwen and the band in 42 or his dimendion fighting Spot. Or if Miquel and the others will fight Spot. Now I don´t think 42 Miles is evil but he dose´t hesitate to kill. It looks like they will explain a lot of his history so be ready if they do like they did with Gwen here so we get what 42 Mile has been through and we will see what our Miles have to go through dose he have to beat himself or make peace? I belive ally but who will get him so that he can face Spot? And I wonder what Miquels end goal will be. Many 2099 fans are mad he was the antagonist but I see him as way deeper and complex than that. There are hope for him yet and that would´t feel cheap, even Spot I think they will come to a head. Anyway I am sad to hear about the struggling work hours they put on the animators. To ad things 3 months before the movie realeases. Like yeah you decide during the animatic, maybe some pre-render but if they mean fully animate like it was finished. No absolutely not you don´t do that. I don´t belive the budget 100 mil is correct for this movie. Now hopefully they make it better, I am glad to hear they had so many working 1000 but that 100 had to jump is sad and I don´t know how payment is meet if they get part pay. I don´t want my favorite movies to be the source of people loosing hope and burn out. That gose against what this movie is about.
