Painter and teacher Barclay Sheaks did a similar thing with landscapes and portraits, using a soft lithography crayon. Using the drawing as a resist really intrigues me, but I have never tried it. I may have to now, just for fun.

Thanks for indicating that oil pastel can be used. I had used oil charcoal ,which was not working seamless.

You can buy regular spray sealant for chacoal and pastels, or you could try hairspray if that's what you have at home.
