Floetrol has a different formula, but likely works about the same. It contains Vinyl acetate, n-butyl acrylate polymer and water.

A lil FYI,boiling does not remove impurities. It does kill most organisms but it does not remove dissolved solids/minerals,etc. or those now dead organisms. If you were to boil the water and catch the vapor in another container and cool it (same way a still works) you will have removed most of the impurities....and have yourself distilled water.

Clive, this popped up on my feed and I shall try and get some. Vaping is banned in my country of residence so I'll still have a shuffti. This could really help me as it is hot and even with a wet tray the paint dries too fast to use it except in the wet season. Well played that man! x

Propylene glycol is used in Tons of things besides Vaping. It's used in foods, you can actually buy this in a grocery store. It's used in pharmaceuticals, beauty products, soaps, print making, tons of drinks and beverages ... on and on and on. This stuff is available everywhere, and for everything. Doesn't matter if you buy food grade, or medical grade Propylene glycol... because you are only using it for paint. And I hate to say it, but Clive was wrong about it being dangerous to put it in your body.... it is literally in tons pf food and drinks, along with medicines lol. Cheers

Propilen glycol прекрасно себя ведет как добавка к гуашевым и акварельным краскам! Это ПАВ подобно oxi gall - бычьей желчи, потому подмалевок не размывается! Не грязнит лессировки. Допустим подмалевок это гуашь, лессировки - гуашь или акварель и все это на чудесном растворе на PG!

@@veronikavenetulis5929 короче говоря пропиленгликоль это такая маслянистая жидкость, которая применяется в очень многих случаях, даже как пищевая добавка! Зефир и крема с ним долго не высыхают. Продается в Леонардо. Если сделать раствор в воде 1: 10 на таком растворе можно разводить гуашь как я делаю при помощи мастихина маленького красить таким раствором очень приятно, разносится ровненько, долго не высыхает, можно подмешивать оттенки прямо на бумаге, смыватьдо бумаги и т. д. Теперь этот слой просох, и при нанесении следующего слоя, ничего не размазывается снизу, то есть будто бы масло или акрил.

I just discovered your channel and I’m so grateful I found you! I’ve been painting for over 30 years and I’m still learning. I recently returned to acrylics and I’m struggling with this. I do youse a wet box pallette and I do like it. But, my question is, if my pallette is laid out with acrylics, do I need to take the time to mix in the Poly Glycol to each paint? Can it be sprayed on top of them? Would that work? Thank you!!!

Thank you for sharing this. Can you or anyone tell me if I can make acrylic ink pads with this and acrylic paint? Would that work? And what type of pad would be best, felt or foam? I have both. I suppose I will experiment. Should I use glycerin instead of pg or both? Thanks for any help. I do know I can stamp with straight acrylic paint. Good video, thanks! It seems a lot of different glycerin(?) could be used. I've picked up a bottle of Glycerol since I read it off wikipedia's page about Paint Retarder, after finding out what those tiny "artist paint retarder" bottles cost. Crazy, lol.

He says ‘you can add it to the mixture as well’ so I would think that it was propylene and water he added the medium too. I was thinking of making a small color chart of neat paint, water and paint, mixture and paint and then mixture with various mediums… gloss, Matt, textured etc… to see how they dry in my normal temperatures, somewhere dry and hot and somewhere cold and damp. This will give me a good guide to possible issues to watch out for where I am (actually not a million miles from where Clive comes from 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿).

An important note. There are two very different types of acrylic varnish. One which is solvent/mineral oil based and cannot be mixed with water. The other is water based varnish. There are manufacturers that sell Acrylic varnish and do not clearly state solvent or water based on there bottles! Beware!

I use rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle to remove acrylic paint from clothes and my painting. I would think this would work for you also.

No. PolyETHYLENE Glycol 3350 (Miralax) is not the same thing as PROPYLENE Glycol. One is a solvent, one is a polyether compound. They’re in no way interchangeable in chemistry, or painting. If you’re using Polyethylene Glycol 3350 powder mixed in water, you’ll get the same results just using water.

After reading your comment @@SaltNBattery to my now-deleted comment, I got curious again what was in some of these commercial flow agents, including Liquitex Flow Aid. I found again the safety data sheet that says it's made of Polyethylene glycol octylphenyl ether. [Its directions say it's a concentrate and to dilute it 20/1, but not less than 10/1.] Since it's kinda pricey I had searched and found that MiraLax is made of the same ingredient, so that's where my original comment came from. I also just found that the brand Floetrol is much more economical [ though not a concentrate] and contains Vinyl acetate, n-butyl acrylate polymer and water. So far that's 3 similar acrylic paint flow additives: Propylene Glycol [commonly found online], Polyethylene Glycol [Liquitex Flow Aid] and the vinyl acetate mixture in Floetrol. I'd love your thoughts on this, since you seem to know your stuff. @@SaltNBattery

Hmm that's interesting. I stand corrected. Are you sure it's specifically PEG 3350? If I remember correctly the 3350 refers to the molecular weight, I'm not sure exactly how it's accomplished but it has to do with the length of the polymer chains. PEG goes all the way up to 20,000 (I think). 3350 is used specifically as a "laxative"/stool softener because of it's lower molecular weight makes it more hydroscopic than even PEG 4000 or

Wow! That's quite an answer and a little past my pay grade m'friend! Thank you. The video here [and my own interest] is on thinning the paint without desaturation of color. That's specifically what LQTX Flow Aid does. RE: am I sure it's PEG 3350? Not sure about Flow Aid, but yes about MiraLax. My understanding is flow aids or flow agents are "additives" and Flow Aid Additive is considered by Liquitex as a "medium" but is a thin, non-viscous, liquid concentrate that reduces the surface tension, and thins the paint, making it easier to spread and/or pour. It's especially useful for paint by number paints that often arrive partly or totally dried up and rubbery. You can usually use drops of flow agent to resurrect "nearly dead" paints and keep them from getting too thick. Pouring medium [sometimes confusingly called flow medium. ARGHH!] is generally more viscous and sometimes has silicone oil or acrylic binders added to aid pourability, limiting premature thickening and drying. It's often used by paint pouring artists. I add gloss pouring medium to make my matte paints smoother and more glossy. You may already know, retarder [aka extender] extends the open time on the palette or container, as well as the drying time to allow for blending and other cool techniques I've not tried. Don't hold me to it, but I think glycerine adds some viscosity and smoothness to the medium or paint. Not sure what else or what it does to color saturation or drying time. @@SaltNBattery
