One of the hardest things to master as a beginner acrylic paint pouring artist is paint mixing. The paint consistency is key to getting the desired results in a fluid paint pour. There are a few steps you can take to make sure you are always getting the same mixture time after time.
In this episode we will review the five steps to mixing paint.
1. Weigh your paint and pouring medium
2. Scrap sides and stick
3. Test your consistency
a. Drip/mound method
b. Build up on stirring stick method
c. Finger scrape method
4. Wait at least 5 minutes between mixes
5. Log your mixture and paints used
Comment acrylic pour paint mixing ratios:
►Craft Paint - 1:1 - 1 part paint to 1 part pouring medium
►Student or soft body paint - 1:2 - 1 part paint to 2 parts pouring medium
►Artist quality paint - 1:3(5) - 1 part paint to 3 (up to 5) parts pouring medium

I love how you showed different ways to test consistency. 16:36 Here's my tip. BEGINNER TIP: For me as a beginner, the best test was the paper flow test! It REALLY helped me to see when all the paints were at the same consistency! (I show it on my video posted 6/9/22, and in my description box I also give a link and credit to the person I first saw do it!) 1:30 "I'm not somebody that will just whip something together.... I follow a recipe." Me too David, me too!! Lol I love your "recipe" type approach for mixing! Obviously as we mature in the trade, maybe will start to have different methods 😉 BUT for beginners your methods are AMAZING!! THANK YOU!

Another way to test that the consistency of the paints you're using is the same is to drip each paint onto a card and tip the card. All the paints should travel, down the card, at the same rate
@LeftBrainedArtist

I've heard that a bunch. If you use different mediums in different paints that doesn't work as well but for sure would work when they are all the same.

I’ve been poring for 4 years and teaching groups for 2 years. I always weigh as a starting point. I always make sure my students scrape the stick every time they add something as it affects the trace left if there is paint on the stick. Pouring isn’t about talent, it’s all about consistency!

Really digging your systematic approach, fellow STEM professional here. I’m wondering about your pouring medium. In another video of yours, that is not a part of this series, you indicate that your elmer’s glue is actually 70% glue / 30% water. Are you measuring out straight glue in this video, or is it the 70/30 mix? Lastly, thank you for going through this training series for us newbs, it is very much appreciated!!
@LeftBrainedArtist
@LeftBrainedArtist 3 жыл бұрын
I almost always start with my 70/30 mix unless I am doing experimentation where I want really thick medium. Just make sure if you pre-mix those that you shake/mix that bottle before using because the glue and water do start to separate after a few days.

From newbie to newbie...my tip. I was finding that the mixing of paints takes time and takes away from the time I could be creating. So I got some squeeze bottles and mixed up a few colours of paints...enough to do a few pours. This way I have them all mixed and ready to go and I can spend more time pouring and creating than doing one, then mixing up more paint before I can do another pour.

@LeftBrainedArtist
@LeftBrainedArtist 2 жыл бұрын
I print out a page with black and white lines and just paint a swatch of my color over it and let it dry. The more you can see the black lines the more transparent the paint is. The less you see the more opaque. That is if the paint doesn't say what it is right on the bottle. All paints will become more transparent as you add medium and water just because the paint is being thinned somewhat.

All I had on hand was school glue which i ran out of, so i dug up some brand name tacky glue after a quick Google said it was pva. It worked fine, maybe better than the school glue. Locally, I can get the tacky glue for $2.87/8oz, about .35-.36¢/oz. Have you tried tacky glue?

I re-viewed this mixing video because I am not being successful in my projects. I blame it on my mixing ratios. I have taken the advice ( more than one person) who said they mix their pouring medium 60/40, meaning if I use glue all 60% then I'd need water 40%. This mixture is what I mix into my paint and hardly ever need to add water. I have a pouring bottle just for this. Now, you showed that you measured your glue separate from the water and then add the water after the glue and the paint are mixed. This is in contrast to what I have been doing. I wonder now if I'd been wrong. But the artists who use this 60/40 ratio (glue all and water) have been successful in their pouring. What am I doing wrong??? I am so desperate and want to give up. I have wasted paints, glue all, a dozen canvas, not to mention the mess I make with jars, bottles, a jug of Floetrol, leveling devices, etc.etc. Not one good one done to claim. This hobby is not for the frugal person, I understand. I am retired and just want to have something to make the day go by happily, aside from watching tv, etc. TY for your videos.
@LeftBrainedArtist
@LeftBrainedArtist 2 жыл бұрын
As long as you know which ratio works you can mix cup by cup or mix large quantities of medium (60/40 or 70/30) and then use that with the paint. Most beginners start with mixing cup by cup which is why my beginners course mentions this way. Your 60/40 is is also correct and my preference when I am painting a lot. If you paintings still aren't working out I would think the quality of the paints you use or the consistency is most likely the problem area. Without being able to see your mix or your final results I am just guess there though Elvira.

"Rerun"...aka - enjoying/needing this 1 a 2nd time. Perhaps more will stick in my mind where can retrieve it better? (sigh!) I think I can now see the difference of only having 1 functioning carotid artery left... Blessed that am not paralyzed (yet?), so MOT complaining! I just hadn't noticed any dramatic differences, until now. (Mostly penmanship, hard to focus, & lost 1/2 my readily available vocabulary. Play Wordle, Mini Crossword & Spelling Bee daily to make sure brain is still working & making new pathways. (Stalling the inevitable, I guess?!) But now, can see is much tougher "to learn & recall new things w/o review/repitition". Ha! The things I learn from watching you are more widespread than expected...smiles!😌

@@LeftBrainedArtist I try to anyway & most days succeed. It could be much worse, all things considered. When it's a sudden blockage - no warning & most folks are then paralyzed on 1 side, like my father-in-law was. I was blessed in that mine was slow, over time, until last bit of blockage & IF didn't have Kaiser telling my Dr what to do (or not to), he would've run tests & caught it before too late. Blessing is that when it takes long time to totally block, God had time to have my body find alternate paths to get blood flow to brain - smaller neck arteties are stretched to max & delivering blood to my brain for the side that's blocked. Pretty cool! People who don't know can't tell anything happened.😊 My brain has always been my fave body part, so am ever so thankful to have this time & try to keep brain fit long as I can. The part of brain at blockage is dead from no blood flow when it closed off, but our brains are incredible at what they can do! And God Is too! So am in best care/shape that I can be, considering state of medical care in this Country.

I'm a beginner at this from the UK and your videos are wonderful. Quick question. I saw another video about mixing colours and a colour wheel which makes me wonder, do you mix less paint (in final volume) for colours with more tint? I don't want to waste paint and I'm not sure how long it keeps once mixed. Sorry if this is a really basic question Claire x
@LeftBrainedArtist
@LeftBrainedArtist 7 ай бұрын
Overall total paint you have to have enough to cover the canvas. Paint that is a super tinter (aquamarine blue etc.) you just might want to use less off cause it will totally take over others. But if you needed 4 oz and you have 4 colors you still need a total of 4 oz you just might have 1.2 ounces of 3 colors and .4 oz of the super tinter color.

It is a possibility. Depends on the paints you use and if you varnish it well or not. I've had two paintings over the course of the last 3 years show yellowing. I think it is one of the best and cheapest materials to practice and gain expertise with. If you decide to really sell your art than you can transition over the more expensive mediums.

Hello, I commented on another one of your videos the other day and I’m wondering if I can ask a couple other questions. When you let your paints set for several hours or over night should you cover them? I’ve been finding that after I let my paints set for a while that they get a little clumpy and thicker. Is that normal? Also sometimes I also get small white dots on my paintings as they dry. I’ve been thinking it’s due to air bubbles. And I’ve been trying to mix my paints slower, letting them sit longer, and using my torch more but I’m still getting those dots. I’m wondering is there anything else I could be doing wrong? Thanks so much for your videos! They’ve been really helpful to me.

I don't cover mine. I have had a little lint and a bug get in but that is pretty much is it. I fyou are doing resin 100% you want a cover as any little things messes up your glass finish. Thicker, yes as the water evaporates. Clump is not normal. I almost always have some of these. Ideally changing your white might help this but it is hard to say without seeing an example.
