Thank you for the excellent video and sharing your recipe, I like the results you're getting. Back in the stone age, I used to do faux finishes using Japan Colors, not even sure they still make them. These were an oil base highly pigmented product that was relatively fast drying. I would apply the colors with a mineral spirits feather it with a brush then spatter Denatured Alcohol into the blended areas to make a cell effect. Some of the cells would be blended by feathering, some would be stippled & some left. This technique created a beautiful faux marble on furniture or in architectural applications. Just thought I'd share this useless trivia with you.

I had to come back to find the Specific Gravity link, because I wanted to do my first attempt with only paint, water, and Floetrol. Using a mixture of house paint and craft paints, about a 50/50 Floetrol mix, and a little water, I had to guess at consistency. Since I don't eat honey, and have no concept of 'heavy' cream, I had to watch a lot of videos to see about how much water and about how much Floetrol to add to come closer to the right consistency. The paints were all different, to start with, but when I was done adding stuff, they were all pretty much the same. Then I had to guess at how much paint to actually use, but even that was a close guess. In the end, I got some nice cells of different sizes, a nice color mix, and some run-off but I managed to get something I like. Now to wait and see how the colors change as the Floetrol dries and becomes clear. More cells are popping up as I wait, so this specific gravity has a lot going for it! I just dread the idea of cleaning silicone off a painting... Thanks again for at least giving us an idea of how specific gravity of paint can give us the cells without silicone.

Thanks so much for sharing your research, and your terrific result! I'm new to this form of painting, and am wondering if you've tried the Pouring Medium, and decided that the GAC 800 and alcohol are best?
@DannyClarkArt7 жыл бұрын
I have used pouring mediums before and they work as far as making the paint flow. The GAC 800 is used to help with the paint drying. I use paints that are already fluid so there is no need to add more. The alcohol is a dispersing agent so it actually causes the paints to move apart. If your using tube paint, you would want to make your fluid paint first and then use the recipe for your pour. I hope that is not too confusing. Thanks for watching!
@screeningmimi7 жыл бұрын
This is a terrific answer, and I so much appreciate your taking the time to clear it up for me Danny. I just stumbled onto this form of painting a few days ago, and wondered if if was necessary to buy yet more 'stuff' on top of what I have! You've cleared that up for me nicely. - and to my great relief. Also, this is timely, in that I've had some small canvases collecting dust for a while, and this seems like the perfect way to get the hang of the process. Your demo and kind explanation comes at exactly the right time for me. I'll be watching and hoping you'll continue in your work, rejoicing in 'happy accidents' and sharing the joy...You're getting wonderful results, and it's extremely generous of you to share...Thanks so very much!

this did help and i am less frustrated - thanks. just one question (in 2 parts LOL) ... what kind of resin would you use to cover the painting and is it necessary to do that.

For small pieces I will use marine supply tabletop resin. for larger pieces I will use art resin. There is another video in my catalog on resin and canvas. Its not required, its only creative preference.

PS.... I cannot find any GAC 800 in any of the usual suppliers here in UK, but bought Liquitex Pouring Medium last night, before watching your video, I wonder if I will have similar effects? Thanks.
@DannyClarkArt7 жыл бұрын
Elaine Collins gac 800 seems to be backordered until mid April. The liquitex pouring medium is a different product. Gave 800 is used to elasticize the paint when drying. Acrylic is a plastic and when it dries fast it rips apart like a balloon. The gac prevents this from happening. Pouring medium adds viscosity to the pigment allowing it to move around on the canvas. I have another video going up today with a little more detail.
