I really appreciate your videos like this, because I can't afford lessons. I'm disabled and almost died from a severe car crash, and painting is one of the only things I can enjoy. This is one of my favourite acrylic tutorials! It got me really excited about glazing and how much it can really enhance your artwork. I’d had a bottle of glazing fluid on my shelf for months not really knowing what to do with it until watching your tutorial. I painted this one twice and I’m leveraging these techniques for another fish painting. Every Sunday, my dogs have sardines with their dinner - we call it “Sardine Sunday.” I hung one of my sardine paintings just above my dog’s dish so he can enjoy sardines all week long. lol Thank you for this amazing tutorial!

This is wonderful. I’ve been an artist all my life. I’m in my fifties now, since raising my children, I’ve just now have gotten back into it. I drew comics and whimsical art when I was younger, and started arts-n-crafts when my children were younger. I’ve been doing crafts now for about six months and I’m so drawn to painting that that’s all I want to do now. I started painting on rocks but I’m ready for the canvas. I’ll follow you from now on and learn what you’re teaching. You’re very patient and and an awesome teacher! Thank you so much. Is there an order to your videos?

So glad to see you back with more videos! You mentioned a stay wet pallet? What is that?? Keeping paint from drying out too soon is an ongoing challenge for me.
@willkempartschool6 жыл бұрын
Hi Carol, yes it's a sheet of absorbent paper (or sponge) that is soaked with water and has another sheet of greaseproof paper placed on top. You place the acrylics on top of the greaseproof paper. As your acrylics dry by evaporation, the water content is replaced into the paint through osmosis from the water reservoir underneath. You can purchase them from art stores or have a go at making your own with some paper towel, greaseproof paper and an empty ice cream tub! Cheers, Will

Thanks Will for this, and all your videos. You really explain things so well. I'm just wondering how your beautiful burnt umber string on the tear-off palette seems to stay so creamy and doesn't dry out. Is it part of the "open' series??
@willkempartschool6 жыл бұрын
Hi Anne, thanks very much, the string on the tear-off palette stays wet due to the volume of paint that I've laid out, the colours are part of the standard heavy body range. Cheers, Will

Would you mind if I asked you about the trick of your palette: how do you manage to keep the paints on it, while the palette is put vertical? Every time I try this my paints are pouring down. Is it a gel of some sort? Or do you simply use a very specific heavy body brand of paint? Thank you :)
@willkempartschool5 жыл бұрын
Hi Adam, yes that's right it's due to the heavy body of the paint, there isn't anything added to the paint. Cheers, Will

Great stuff as always, and wonderfully presented! Why not just use ultramarine for the blues, did you decide beforehand to use a slightly different colour palette than in the reference image?
@willkempartschool7 жыл бұрын
Hi Teemu, yes, I wanted to demo the glazing properties of the Phthalo and keep to a limited palette for beginners, but you could definitely work with an Ultramarine Blue rather than tweaking with the Crimson, but then would need to switch to the Phthalo for its glazing properties (or a Manganese Blue if you wanted a super subtle glaze) Cheers, Will

good work! one question can a finished painting be considered a painting study or does the painting have to be rough and just in tone color to be considered a painting study? i am a bit confused because i was asked to do a painting study and my outcome looks very much like the finished product, and i am not sure if its acceptable. please if anyone can answer this question it will be highly appreciated thanks.

Hi Will, greetings from Finland. I would like to ask You about Acrylic Glazing Techniques... I use Daler-rowney acrylic paints (System 3- series) and when glazing I use only water to thin the paint. Some people say You can use just water to make very thin acrylic glazes but is it safe for the paint layers ? I would like to save some money , but do You recommend to go an buy some medium ? and thanks for good videos and articles of Your website , helped me a lot since I started painting.
@willkempartschool6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jukka, I find when working at an easel using a glazing medium is pretty essential to prevent the paint from pouring down the canvas, if you're working on a very absorbent surface (like watercolour paper) you can just about get away with it but a glazing medium will create a stronger bond to the paint film. You might find this article of interest especially the section form Sarah Sands from Golden paints on thinning acrylics: willkempartschool.com/getting-started-how-to-choose-what-to-paint-on/ Cheers, Will

Hi Will, always enjoy your teaching, your art. Would you mind I have a question for you. I bought an Art Spectrum acid free 400 gsm acrylic paper pad. I gessoed it with two coats before I started painting. Well, the paint didn’t want to stay on the paper but moved around my brush. Was it because I gessoed it? Many thanks
@willkempartschool5 жыл бұрын
Hi Vincent, sometimes on acrylic papers there is a seal that's been used to protect the paper that can repel the water, you can try adding a few drops of an acrylic flow release medium to your water, this is called a surfactant that reduces surface tension and helps the paint to adhere. Cheers, Will
