Excellent video will show it to my technicians. Wanted to add that something I've found many times is the contactor blowing the fuse at the air handler when calling for cooling. When that happens usually de resistance of the contactor is like between 1-7 ohms. Ohms should read between 9-17 most of the times.
@atticrat7270
@atticrat7270 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, was disappointed he didn't show more of that.. these contactor coils are causing problems these days, with shorts. You ohm out the coil and it's generally around 1 or so, a lot of techs don't know about to do that.

My outside a/c unit fan runs constantly whether the compressor is on or off, and when off, the fan runs at a slower speed. So the unit is still cooling, but when the compressor shurs off, the condenser fan still runs. Faulty contactor switch?

Thank you, great explanation. I have a single pole contactor, points are on the right, shunt is on the left. The replacement is the opposite. I'm figuring to keep the wiring correct I should put the new contactor upside down. Is that right? Thanks.
@bernardocisneros4402
@bernardocisneros4402 9 күн бұрын
It doesn't matter. It's just a switch. It's like installing a switch that powers a light in your home upside down. It will work just fine but it will be in the up position when the light is off and in the down position when the light is on. Same with the coil terminals on the contactor. You can reverse the leads on that too and the coil will still energige.

why do i have 2 contactors on my heat strips versus the one i see on most modern package units today? one is ahead of the strips before it gets to the dual post sequencer and the other is after they pass through the strips before it returns and completes the current and i also do not have any safety thermal disconnects. it also seems to have came that way. is this common?
@richardshandross3453
@richardshandross3453 2 ай бұрын
At 12:07 or so, you measured 6V of voltage drop - but the blower side of the contact is not connected to anything. So, there must be an internal short somewhere between the input and output connections, because you can only get a voltage drop across the resistance of the pitted contacts if there is current flowing and no current would flow without there being a short. Not sure what path that short could possibly take - do you have any thoughts on that? Great video, thanks!
@bernardocisneros4402
@bernardocisneros4402 9 күн бұрын
There has to be a short because you can't have VD without current flow.

On the voltage drop test, what do i need to set my meter to? I keep seeing 120v?
@bernardocisneros4402
@bernardocisneros4402 9 күн бұрын
On the voltage drop test, you set your meter to Volts AC. Place one voltmeter probe on L1 and the other probe on T1. You have to turn on the unit to see the voltage drop because there has to be current flow in order to have voltage drop. The reason you're seing 120V is because the contactor is not energized and there's 120V on the L side and 0V on the T side. The voltmeter measures the difference in voltage between its 2 probes.

My max current rating on my outdoor unit says 30amp.. and the contactor that was in it already was a 25FLA, which it burned… does this mean whoever put replaced the contactor before used a wrong one? It should’ve been 30FLA or 35FLA?
@bernardocisneros4402
@bernardocisneros4402 9 күн бұрын
You're 100% correct. The person that installed it probably didn't have a 30 or higher only 25, so he said "25 FLA it is"
@NeilPho
@NeilPho Жыл бұрын
The voltage drop across the contacts is not convincing. You need current flowing to really demonstrate the problem. Using Low-Z on the meter may well have brought the apparent voltage drop down to zero given there was no current flow through the contacts. Also it would have been worth pointing out the first contactor had one permanently connected pole in addition to the single switched pole (sometimes called a shunt or one and a half poles)

I definitely agree with everything you said there, but for us seasoned technicians, we already knew that. But for those that learning, that would have been the better way to explain it.

How close to LRA rating could a load be allowed to run without potential problems

Should be at RLA
@mrgreen9086
@mrgreen9086 Жыл бұрын
@@maness2112 my wording here was wrong. What I meant to say is how close to LRA on startup would a load like a compressor be too high. For example I got 102 inrush amps with a LRA of 105 on a compressor
@Balticblue93
@Balticblue93 Жыл бұрын
@@mrgreen9086 In that case, I would replace the contactor with a high LRA overhead and most likely install a hard start kit. 5-2-1 is the ideal hard start that I install, i don't do the two wire cheap units. But you are still within spec at 102 of 105 but I can't see I see many LRA units as low as 105. Usually, it is 150-200 for the models that I buy and install for my clients.

LRA locked rotor amps: the rotor is "locked" and not rotating at all. Anything higher than the LRA, the contact will be rendered useless. (Burned up).
