Act II: Die Walküre | The Ring Cycle

Opera North’s acclaimed concert staging of Wagner’s Ring cycle, filmed in Leeds, UK, June 2016.
In Die Walküre, it is human emotion that takes centre stage. The musical highlights are many: ‘Winterstürme’, Siegmund’s hymn of praise to the coming of spring and the awakening of love; the Ride of the Valkyries; the Magic Fire music. Above all, there is the great confrontation between the god Wotan and his favourite daughter, Brünnhilde - the Valkyrie of the title - who love each other deeply, yet whose relationship has been irreparably broken by her disobedience.

I agree too. Especially excellent facial and gesture acting. Some vocal nuances could perhaps be deepened by some of Joyce DiDonato's masterclasses, but maybe that's just due to the technical delivery constrictions over the web. It would be nice to experience this bunch live.

(1:29:16) Jetzt folgt die Szene, die von vielen Regisseuren falsch verstanden wird. Das schlußendiche "Geh!" von Wotan zu Hunding ist viel wirkungsvoller, wenn es verächtlich mit wegwerfender Hanbewegung in normaler Lautstärke vorgebracht wird, nicht im aufschreiend Tone (wofür deutsche Bühnen berüchtigt sind), die Dramatik des Moments bringt das Orchester deutlich zum Ausdruck. - Heinz

I call this wonderful production the "Discount Ring" swingers swnd orchestra on stsge ingers wearing formals rather than costumes and no ridiculous today updating set design nonsense to infuriate me snde I'm sure other Wagner traditionalists.

En version concert bien sûr, c'est délectable cette proximité entre chanteurs et orchestre. Mais si l'opéra est monté, la volonté de Wagner est pour moi la bonne, elle est quasi cinématographique, en avance sur son temps.

I also love how they got the story info wrong Wotan standing next to his four-winged horse, Wrong, Sleipnir his horse has eight legs NOT four wings even the Valkyrie rode wingless horses they were able to gallop in the sky from Vlhaslla down to mid-gard to collect the human souls to take back with them to Valhalla.

Wagner took many artistic liberties in addition to this. There are no Rhine-daughters in Norse myth either.
