It is nice that people feel that way about these beautiful creatures. But some people are heartless and cruel and I just witnessed a sick guy (here on YT) feed one of these to a Lizard. The idiot was just cackling like a hen while the poor moth was trying to get away in vain. It upset me very much at how cruel people can be. I mean if you don't want the moth any more, then let it go. I hatched a few of these moths this summer and it was a wonderful experience.

Think about it this way: while an individual moth may not live for very long, they have some sort of benefit from being short-lived (given that they're not extinct!), and therefore we get to see these beautiful creatures at all! 💚

Many moths and other insects have no mouths and do not eat in the ADULT stage. They do have mouths and are total eating machines as caterpillars, tho. They spend all their time eating to save up enough fat to get them through the adult stage, which consists of mating, laying eggs and then dying and usually only lasts a few days if that (some insects live only for a few HOURS as adults). Also, the adults usually die of exhaustion after mating, not starvation.

Now it will stay on Birch branches in our house till it's death, it is to precious to be left outside to suffer in rain and high wind for next day or so. We get them in our yard from June to August, here in Sudbury Ontario Canada.

It already mated with female at that time. We tried putting him in hollow of the tree and he just fell to the ground. His wings were demaged. Next year we had a whole bunch of them. My favorite American moth, though the Hyalophoras (cecropias and related moths) and Polyphemus are pretty spectacular too. Yours is a male, the wide featherlike antennae are the giveaway Females have thin antennae, and are nnot as commonly seen because they don't fly much -- they just sit and produce pheromones that attract the males - it's the males flying in search of females that get confused by porch lights and end up on our houses (or decks). :) They normally hold their wings this way - it's their natural resting position.

Have you ever seen one at night. They mate at night and they have a luminescence that is just beautiful. I think the female has some pink luminescence and that is the way they find each other. They only have about 48 hours to find a mate and procreate before dying. Many species of mayfly do the same. When they mature they trade mouth parts for sex organs, mate and fall on the river or lake and die leaving behind the eggs for future generations of mayflies. All the best, Sean

Actually, only the males live for 1 week because they have no mouths. The females do have a mouth so they can eat and live longer to make and lay the eggs. I should know, I'm doing a biology project on them. :D
@sazji10 жыл бұрын
Lace Gyver No silk moth of either sex has a mouth. The females produce their eggs completely from the energy they stored while growing up as caterpillars. They hatch, mate, lay their eggs and die, usually within a week or 10 days.
