I’ve watched SO MANY reacts to this clip, and as much as I freakin LOVE the song, I’m finding myself watching for the reactors reactions.. the total amazement on their faces.. the “is that a banjo?”.. and then the absolutely insane reaction when she hits high gear! For over 20 years I was a stagehand and in all that time there was only a handful of unforgettable moments... I was working on the "Day on the green" festival in a country town (Australia) and as the band was playing, Kasey walked up on stage with (I assume) her daughter hand in hand, long before she was supposed to go on and perform. Now as stagehands, we always move aside, make ourselves small and let the artist do their thing. We had all backed ourselves into a corner and she walked straight to us and asked how we all were. Now understand that we are all long haired, tattooed degenerate looking folk and she stayed and made conversation with us all...forced us to talk with her. She was one of the most genuine people I've ever met in the industry. A beautiful human being.

She really is. I have met her a couple times through my work and she genuinely takes the time to stop and speak to everyone around her. There is also a men's rehab facility on the central coast that she regularly goes to visit without promoting it online. She visits often and sings for the men and spends hours listening to their stories. Kasey is truely one of a kind.

Kasey has faced her own trials and tribulations, but has always come through, stronger for the endeavour. At one stage, she ws having problems getting airplay on commercial radio stations; even though she was putting out hit song, so she wrote a song as a commentary about that called "Not Pretty Enough" as she didn't fit the mainstream idea of a performer.

Fantastic reaction! Not many reactors have been able to articulate the complexity of her emotions in this piece. Kasey is music royalty here in Australia. She is an independent artist who describes her genre as alt.country which often meanders into other lanes. Her first single, The Captain, was released when she was 19 (I think) and is a fantastic contrast to Ain't No Little Girl, which she wrote much later in life. Both well worth checking out, along with pretty much everything she does cos she's just that good.

I read an interview with her and thought she said she contacted Em directly for permission. Firstly, my understanding is she doesn't need permission to perform it, she does have to have permission to record it for release or video. She had the audio recording but not video as that was not planned. To get the video, after getting permission from whomever, she sent a message out on some platform asking for any footage from cell phone recordings taken that night. She then did the editing to put what you've just seen together. I'm fairly certain she would have sent the sound file to get permission and the final copy for Em to see, but there was no mention of it. Em's team would be foolish not to allow this. It is so demonstrative of the brilliance of Em's lyrics...they transcend time, genre, gender...they are powerful and show a mastery that most don't process. From what I read, Kasey did release music here in the US on the country music scene with very moderate success and even wrote a song, I believe titled "Am I Not Pretty Enough" which is directed at the country music industry here in the US. This part was 2nd hand information. I don't follow country music so I don't know what else she's released here.

@@dmj4966 Copyrights aren't "released". What would be naive would be to think this company just said " ok, sure em, well just release our ownership of publishing rights to this song because you like it". If she's using this song to make money then she's paying for some licensing right to use it. The company that does own the rights, eight mile style, is currently suing spotify for illegally streaming 235 Eminem songs that they own right to. Kasey isn't a struggling artist barely scraping by needing handouts and pity from Eminem and eight mile style to sing this. I don't know where this story of Eminem "releasing" the copyright came from or thinking em surely had to have been consulted, because, obviously.... Her cover is better than every other artist that has done this song, but to think she isn't paying for the legal right to use it, while she's making money off it, is some naive romanticized telling of a story that never happened.

Eminem certainly still has a voice in these decisions. For example, he is the one that demanded a politician stop using this song when he was campaigning. I mean, look at the name of the outfit that "owns the rights"... think about it.

Absolutely brilliant reaction mate. You totally understand why she did this version.I understand Eminem has given Kasey permission to put this on Spotify. Kasey is a legend here in Australia. She has had her struggles getting her music out to the public. Radio stations wouldn't air her music because of her genre. But she beat the narrow minded idiots that wouldn't promote her, purely over a genre. She wrote a couple of songs that made the music charts. While most talent managers and/or lawyers are able to green light monetizing another artists cover, a lot of artists who have a strong connection with their craft won't allow it unless they themselves approve. Kasey illustrates the genius of emnem’s lyrics, because it’s those lyrics that resonated with her so much that it brought out THIS. And she and the band did have to go this hard and this nasty, because it’s what she’s feeling. That’s emotion made form in music, and that pain and rage and resentment is made beautiful in its truth and in its power.

Ok, a couple of things I have to say. Firstly I am thankful to Kasey for allowing me to have a better appreciation for Eminems lyrical ability. Was never a fan of rap ir him, but Kaseys version forced me to take a second look, and he is quite the wordsmith. Secondly and by extension, I have now through Kasey discovered your channel. There is a fine line with reaction channels. Some just barely manage to nod along to the beat and yell "that's amazing " every so often, and some reactors think they are the star and just dribble on abiut nothing. You on the other hand seemed to have struck a nice balance between tge two and actually add to the experience of sharing the original material. Third : Kasey is essentially a C and W singer with occasional forays into popular music. Don't expect any of her originals to be like Lose Yourself. There is a nice little unintentional trilogy she has put together over the years. 1. Am I not pretty enough 2. The Captain and 3. Ain't no little girl. Check them out in that order. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺

This performance is made even more powerful knowing that the man playing guitar is her dad, and that she grew up the child of a working musician, so there's two generations in this story. Also, the interesting visual style is because they didn't record video, but when they realized how special this performance was--they reached out to fans and got video from them, and stitched it together. You have a lot of recommendations to watch her most popular stuff, but my favorites are: Rattlin' Bones, Wheelbarrow, and the amazing live performance of Runaway Train

It isn't so much crying that you are hearing, but emotional keening like you hear with Irish singers, I believe. Kasey started with her family's band "The Dead Ringer Band". The family when not on a country circuit spent the rest of the year hunting foxes and rabbits [vermin] for pelts on the Nullarbor Plain [semi-arid desert area]. So the family knew what it was to have a sort of feast and famine lifestyle I suppose you could call it. She is a contemporary of Eminem's and was having her own struggles, when this came out she had written her break through song "Ain't Pretty Enough" because she wasn't exactly in any genre, and radio stations ignored her. That song got radio play and led to an ARIA . It is so nice to hear someone appreciate her talent. She leaves nothing on the stage. "Ain't No Little Girl" is another of her own and well worth a listen, whether live or official video you will get the emotion from Kasey.

I normally hate the sound of steel guitar in country and western music, but in a lot of moody Bluegrass it just sounds and feels so different. And in this performance Bill Chambers just makes that lap steel wail and moan. Years ago a friend showed me a vid she took at a studio session. it was about 10 minutes of Bill and Kasey just having fun, dueling lap steels, and it was mind blowing.

Wonderful honest reaction! I cry every time I hear this song, particularly when she sings "He goes home and barely knows his own daughter" because, as a father of three, this hits hard. And like you, I went through an extremely rough period a few years ago. For most of my working life I had it so easy, earning ridiculous money and never having to worry about where the next buck came from. Then, at 60, job opportunities dried up and I was unemployed for almost 2 years without any unemployment benefit. I had to dig into savings, all the while deluding myself that things would get better. Then I had to face the reality and had to explain to my kids that I couldn't afford birthday or Christmas presents. I remember walking around the city, in the cold, watching everyone around carrying big bags of gifts and feeling so useless, a failure. But as you said, the kids picked up on my predicament and were extremely supportive. The whole experience has actually made better people out of all of us, me and the kids. I'm sure you feel the same way and I wish you a brighter future. One love!

I first saw Kasey live in 2002 or 2003, She's an amazing artist and is so great at connecting emotionally with her music, and projecting that to the crowd. I liked Em's version of this, like pretty much guy around my age, but I never really listened to the lyrics, Kasey made me really feel them. There are so many great songs of Kaseys that you should hear, I was trying to come up with a list, but it was almost her whole discography. The Captain was her first big single from her first album, she wrote Not Pretty Enough about the fact that she couldn't get played on mainstream radio, and ironically it became a huge mainstream hit, I also love Nullabor Song, Million Tears, This Mountain, Falling Into You, and If I Were You from the same album. Wayward Angel was a song to her son, promising that she won't be perfect, but she'll always be there for him, Mother is another one I love from that album, I could go on forever.

For some reason I recognize her name, but she was new to me. What a performance! Thanks for sharing your emotions to it, Brandon. Last night, when I watched another video you did, I kind of realized that you must have had some issues yourself, when ended the video the way you always do.... Be strong, my friend, but cry if you have to. Don't give up.

Kasey predates the KZbin generation - she's an established artist here in Australia. I think for artists of that generation, youtube views and the like do not show their popularity. Kasey was part of her family's country band (her dad plays slide guitar on this video) before trying to go solo. That was tough as she wasn't getting airtime on popular radio stations with her style of music. That changed with the release of the heart-on-her-sleeve, heart-wrenching but easy listening pop ballad "Am I not pretty enough?" back in the 90s.If you want to listen to something very different but just as genuine, that's a good place to start.

I bet there's a whole lot of artists out there saying why didnt i think of doing that, A real surprise from Kasey who is more country bluegrass, The 2017 version of The Captain from paste studios New York is also very emotional a seemingly simple but heart felt song portrayed with real emotion

Thank you for this reaction … and for trusting us with such an intimate part of your life. As a parent myself, I think most of us have felt like we are failing our children in one way or another. How can we possibly be perfect at something we’ve never done before? As Ren said - “we must not forget that we ARE human beings”. As for Kasey … she is brilliant and this cover is absolutely my favourite version!

I appreciate the open emotion and honesty shown in this reaction. Kasey is a Gem of Australian artists and her years of touring and struggle and honing her craft are on full display. Australia is a tough and unforgiving land and has moulded the people in a similar way. To gain any success as an artist here is constant shows all over the country playing small and sometimes remote locations usually in the back corner of a Pub. The crowds, usually fuelled by a few brews, are not backward in expressing Their opinion of the performance. So either entertain the bastards with your talent, stagecraft, hopefully both or be prepared for the alcoholic fuelled criticism. The tough environment polishes Aussie artists to a level above. You should dive further into Kaseys catalog, she is a talent loved in Australia that the rest of the world is yet to discover. Australia has a lot of talented artists like this, It a very deep Rabbit Hole. For another emotional performance have a look at Matt Corby and “Brother” from Tripple Js “Like a Version”. You will not be disappointed. Cheers from Tassie

Thanks for the amazing reaction. One thing that no one ever touches on in these reactions is that Kasey is a mother as well as a performer so when she talks about being scared for her family it is real. I think you connected with this when you had the reaction you did as a parent. I agree with you that Kasey is criminally under appreciated in this country although a legend in Australia. Thanks for spreading the word.

❤ Thank you for appreciating Kasey’s voice. Kasey has always given 110% of herself in her live performances…that is why she has been Aussie music royalty for 25+ years! ❤ The performance is only enhanced by her Dad, Bill, playing slide. ❤ Have to say though that this has to be Kasey’s best live performance ever! The banjo playing is completely insane…who would think to play banjo in a rock setting! 😮

Thank you for being so strong & wearing your heart on your sleeve like that. Kasey's version honours Eminem well. For ears as sliw & old as mine I suddenly have a much better appreciation of his lyricism. And she's managed to keep his cadence to some extent. After seeing this I've looked at other artist's non-wrap covers & they seem to lose that (I'm looking at you, Kelly Clarkson). Kasey's only a few years younger than Eminem, was hitting (country) charts in the US about the same time as this song with her own complaint against the industry, and grew up in a family of performing musicians. So it would not surprise me if Kasey has first hand experience to back this song. Especially in Australia due to its size & shallowness of markets. Even so, she's made it into the ARIA Hall of Fame here.

Best cover of a song 🎶 ever 😮😮😮 😂💚💚💚💚 I loved your story bc I’ve been there and it is very traumatic - I was a single mom w no child help or financial support from my son’s dad for yrs and it leaves you scarred 😢 I once had only enough money to buy a bag of potatoes and one pound of hamburger meat to last for over a week or maybe it was two. I had a jar of pickles and that’s what I ate so my family could eat the food - I was in X-ray school on a free scholarship and I would count pennies for gas to go to school bc I knew it was my way out of this situation so That was my one shot and I knew I could not fail. I finished school w the second highest gpa and got the second highest score on my national registry test ( like a rn goes thru ) God bless all who struggle as parents to make a better life for their kids. 😢 I had to watch this twice ok so over and over and over 😮 I will be subscribing to your channel

It's nice to see I wasn't the only one mesmerised by her performance, emotions, and abilities to arrange such an amazing version. How gutsy for an Aussie alt country singer to take on one of Eminem's most popular songs. Lots of other Kasey's songs to listen to & so much more Aussie music for you to react to . Jimmy Barnes/Cold Chisel, John Farnham, Guy Sebastian, Midnight Oil, LRB, Billy Thorpe & the Aztecs, INXS, Crowded House...so much more to enjoy ❤

Eminem has seen this, loved it and gave Kasey and her band permission to put it on Spotify. Kasey is a country singer, here in Australia. She loves to wander into other genres sometimes and being an Eminem fan, she wanted to do a cover of this song but needed time to do the song justice. Covid lock downs gave them the opportunity. By not being able to tour, this is the arrangement they came up with. I love Eminem but this version drove the lyrics and feeling home for me. Wonderful reaction.

Don't think there's much acting in that performance. She actually feels this to the core.. She grew up in a musical family and did her "apprenticeship" traveling the country. She was very skilled even an a young age and ended up leading the family band. When she first tried to break out as a solo act she faced many negative people and closed doors. Radio stations would not play her new music. She persevered and her following grew until she had several No1 hits before and is now the youngest inducted into the hall of fame!! She lived this song!!
