This 1974 documentary examines the evolution of gear technology and the uses of gears from their invention to modern day applications.
The gear provides the best means for the efficient transfer of power from one direction to another. Today they are most widely used in the control of speed, which is determined by the respective number of teeth on each gear called the gear ratio.

Shell’s surprising and captivating Historic Film Archive dates from 1934 and covers a rich mix of topics from technology, science and engineering to craftsmanship, motorsport and travelogue.
The Shell Film Unit, responsible for the content, was a highly celebrated part of Britain’s Documentary Movement. Key figures from that movement were involved, including: Jack Beddington, Edgar Anstey, Arthur Elton, John Grierson, Kay Mander, Stuart Legg and Douglas Gordon.
Its films were wide reaching, often screened in cinemas and through the non-theatric film distribution circuit, which brought film to educational establishments and organisations across the UK. While many films covered technological themes related to Shell’s activities, others were entirely unrelated and served purely to educate the general public.
As Shell innovated in technologies that would provide oil and gas products for the world, the Shell Film Unit also innovated in the technological advancement of film, incorporating graphics and different forms of animation as early as the 1930s.
During WW2 the Shell Film Unit was co-opted into war effort, making films for the Ministry of Information’s film division. Its prowess in technological documentary suited the MoI’s need for technical training films.
While the name and the medium has changed many times over the years, the documentary tradition lives on at Shell. Its contemporary film team is part of Shell’s multi-disciplinary in-house agency, Creative Solutions. It continues making award-winning factual content that informs and educates the public, now usually released on social media platforms.

Very interesting video. One quibble is with terminology. Gear sets cannot increase or multiply power. They can multiply torque, but not power. They can increase torque with reduced RPM, or reduce torque with increased RPM. But the power after a gear set is the same as before the gear set (minus losses due to friction).

I was in Rotary International; I read in their history that some Engineers advised the Organization that the revised Gear Seal would do no work, and Professional Advice was enlisted to correct the issue in a new Version.

Great film, this is an updated version of the 1939 film TRANSFER OF POWER. In the US, it was LEVERAGE, with the Harlow Wilcox narration.

Even one synchromesh gearbox seems like a wonderland itself. I have to gear myself deeper into that great topic. I see how Jean Tinguely got fully absorbed by it. Thankyou :)

At about 12:27, it says that "one wheel with the cutting teeth of the correct profile, generates the same shape in a blank wheel, so vast numbers of identical wheels can be cut." While hobs (cutting wheel) can cut "vast numbers of identical wheels," and the shape of the cutting wheel needs to be "the correct profile," the cutting profile is never identical to the cut profile. The cutter profile is usually straight, whereas the cut profile is curved. A tooth profile is not formed to look like the cutter's profile, but rather a generated curve, specific to the number of teeth in the gear. A hob can be used to cut a wide range of tooth numbers, ranging from about 14 to infinity., each curved to a specific tooth number. count. There are tooth cutters that are straight like a rack, where the blank is "rolled" by the cutter as it reciprocates up and down generating the tooth profile. See "Maag" gear cutters.

It is my understanding that Roller Chains are more efficient than gears & that is why race motorcycles still use Chains. Victoria brand motorcycles used chains in.their gearbox instead of gears. Cycloid gears are used in Model T cars. It might be because Henry Ford liked working on watches & at the time most watches used Cycloid gears - that is just a guess? I have been told that the center distance between gears is more critical, when.using Cycloid gears as compared to Involute gears?

It is true that clocks use cycloid gears and that the distance between gears is critical. It's also true that cycloid gears work better when the driving gear is larger than the driven gear - which is as they are in clockwork.

There is no such thing as an involute curve as standard "involute" gears are generated from rack. However, one gear can be made to turn in velocity by adjusting the teeth face of the other. Epacyclodial curves, etc, are a perception of ignorance.
