since when did they start calling it a diesel engine instead of an oil engine

It has always been called a diesel engine, it was named after the inventor Rudolph Diesel.

@@nathanielsantana403 I'm not an expert but Diesel fuel is a form of oil. I think in the early years of automotive diesel engines, the fuel was referred to as Diesel oil.

That was between first and second world war. They didn't wanted to​ use german names as a consequence of first world war propaganda. The british royal family changed their name for the same reason.
