What if they charge you for classes ( If so what is the average price for it because the price is $2000)
@ActingCareerCenter
@ActingCareerCenter 4 жыл бұрын
@@therealesj In my experience, acting classes cost between $100 - $300 per month. If there is a class that costs $2000, I would be very skeptical, especially if it is being offered by a talent agent. That is a conflict of interest. Agents should offer representation only. Acting teachers should offer classes.

If you can't afford acting classes. Be creative and hustle. Offer to clean the theater. Offer to clean the toilets, sweep the floors, mop the floors, clean the stage, in return for free acting classes. They have to pay someone to maintain the studio, it might as well be you. How do you think that George Clooney paid for his acting classes when he was dead broke and couldn't afford them. George Clooney offered to clean the the theater, at the Beverly hills playhouse. And that was the start of his acting career.

This is amazing advice. I recently began filming/producing/starring in an original web series and call me hopeful but I feel like it has potential to be something big. So, it’s gotten me to think about all the big questions about agents and representation and all that Jazz. I feel like once my first season comes out, it could also be a talking point when talking to other creatives and agents. I feel AMAZING 🤩

After being scammed myself I had serious doubts about pursuing my dream as it hits hard when you believe in the good in people and trust that the individual has no reason to hurt you especially being on the spectrum but never the less the dream lives on and coming from a small town in Scotland it only pushes me harder and after seeing this video, my good sir I am greatly fortunate to have come across this tonight as I’ve understood a great deal I did not before and for this I thank you. My little niece was in the dance recital she was probably about 8 years old at the time. Although I was there to watch my niece, I seen a little 8-year-old boy from another dance school on stage, he was so full of energy charismatic and he took command of the whole stage. I was able to follow him from the stage back to his parents. I asked the parents if they ever considered placing their son in the films and commercials, long story short, they came in, he auditioned, we signed him. He was a natural and he was booking left and right.

The self submission ironically was the easiest for me, but then again I haven't tried any other ways. I Googled top Agencies in my area and then picked 5 of my choices, did as much research on them as I could and submitted to 2 of them via their online instructions. Never heard back from the first attempted choice, but then got an interview with the second choice and then offered a contract right after the interview (studied my lil 5 second monologue all day before and forgot all that stuff during the interview smh 😂 but quickly made up something). This was in the mist of Covid...and deciding to finally try such a career is a diff story lol. I can just say it's a blessing from God to get represented by a good reputable agency; especially when you're just starting out. I'm grateful 🙏🏾 and think about that moment all the time. Kurt is da knowledge man 🙌🏾

I started improv classes two weeks ago through the acting school you recommended in one of your most recent videos. The school is out of Cleveland. I am enjoying it immensely. I have headshots tomorrow just to get some professional photos up on the casting sites. There's a a HVAC supplier and installer in the state that I live in that reached out to me on Backstage with regards to me acting as an HVAC installer for one of their corporate videos. I'm not sure of what to expect but I know that without your videos, I likely wouldn't have even considered this.

My biggest dream is to just simply act; to do what I love more than anything in the world and get paid to do what I love more than anything in the world (and I do). I don't care if it's in a film on TV or on a stage. Fall in love with the CRAFT of acting and the rest will take care of itself. If all that you want is to be in a film and you don't care about acting - well that's easy, sign up at Central Casting. Anybody can do "extra" work and some people make a decent living at it. Some Extras (aka "background actors") are also delusional because they think they're going to get famous by standing in the background; going to get "lucky" one day or get "discovered" while NOT acting. The top of the mountain isn't going to come to you - you have to climb it. You might get "discovered" if you're already performing in a play and a producer or casting director sees your performance and they decide they want to cast you in a film - that's exactly what happened to me. I was performing in a play in Hollywood and one night there just happened to be a producer in the audience. He contacted me 24 hours later and offered me a lead role in a TV "spec" pilot, which never ended up getting picked up by networks, but that's the job that made me SAG eligible.

4th point was a great tip! I'm contemplating separating from one of my reps and feeling a little anxious that by doing so, I'll cut myself off from getting the better auditions if you know what I mean. I'm confident that I can book small gigs, and using that as leverage makes a lot of sense. Thank you!

Excellent tips. It’s a lot easier to get an agent, to enter the entertainment industry but it’s a lot harder to stay in the industry. I did the New Orleans film festival, a small role for Disney and a short film and doing music gigs plus a theatre degree. So I am a lot more confident in returning to work should I decide to find another agent or management in near future just nerve wrecking because you’d want to stay in the industry and do well.

I'd recommend reading as many books as you can about acting so you can learn as much as you can about the different "styles" of acting. Read "On Acting" by Sanford Meisner; read "The Meisner Approach" by Larry Silverberg (a four book series) and "An Actor Prepares" by Stanislavsky - there's many others. Once you know enough about how each system works - you'll know whether or not that teacher even has a clue as to what they're talking about. I went to a school here in Los Angeles for about four days but because I'd already read a few books and watched "Theaters Best Kept Secret" and the "Sanford Meisner Master Class DVD", I knew enough to realize that this guy had no clue what he was talking about - so I left that school after four days. A few weeks later I was going on a hiking trip in Angeles Crest National Forest with about five friends (all actors) and told one of them about this experience & asked him where he trained - he said "Playhouse West", I'd never heard of it. But later found out that it's the last place Sanford Meisner taught before he died and on day ONE at PW I KNEW I was in the right place. I'd also recommend (after doing some reading; watching more videos), make a list of every acting school in your area; visit EVERY one of them and audit classes at the ones that will allow you to audit a class for free and trust your instincts/intuition when making a decision. One of the schools I went to before PW just gave me bad vibes and that was enough of a reason for me to turn around and walk out without even auditing a class. Didn't like the snobby; condescending attitude of the teachers and this is a VERY well respected; well known school - it just wasn't for me.

Could you make a video about what having an agent does for an actor's "career" and why or how it works that way (versus no agent), along with insights about ways to decide which agent would be the best option for an actor by giving the actor the widest net access to acting opportunities/jobs. Such a video would be very valuable to me and A LOT of other "new" actors.

Find out if your school has an acting or "theater" class. If they don't, wait until you get into high school. I don't know how it is over there but almost every high school in America has a theater program. My first acting class ever was at the high school I went to in Texas but unfortunately it was useless. The teacher did nothing but read newspapers every day, it was a goof-off class where we did absolutely nothing. If I'd have known any better I'd have been reading books about acting while everybody else in class was goofing off (btw, this is something can can be doing RIGHT NOW, read as many books on acting as you can). I HIGHLY recommend the book "On Acting" by Sanford Meisner - you can see it on the shelf behind Kurt in every single one of this videos and there's probably a reason it's the ONLY book which is facing forward. "An Actor Prepares" by Stanislavsky is another good one. When you're old enough to get a job you might want to consider setting aside as much money as you can to pay for college or get a grant or some kind of financial aid so that you can go to a regular (non-acting) school and get a BETTER job which will enable you to pay for acting classes. Every actor has to have a regular job in the beginning in order to pay for classes; headshots; casting sites etc. Even when your acting career starts to take off you still need to have something you can fall back on during the slow season. You're kind of lucky that you already know what you want to do so early in life, you have plenty of time to plan out your strategy; plan out your future and you definitely need to have a plan if you want to be an actor - don't try to rely on "luck". If you failed to plan then you've planned to fail. Have a plan; write it down; make changes when necessary and maybe read the book "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People". This book is great when it comes to planning your future; setting goals - and achieving them, consistently. It's also required reading at Playhouse West in Los Angeles (the school founded by Jeff Goldblum). If you're not already in the group "Casting Directors for Actors" and "Talent Managers for Actors" (both on Facebook), I recommend joining both of these groups and PLEASE read the group description before you post anything in the group. The group description alone has so much valuable information in it that can help you as you move forward in your acting career. They have a few very simple rules but they also have REAL Casting Directors and REAL Talent Managers in both groups - they are a wealth of information. Both groups are run by Wendy Alane Wright: If you don't know who she is - just read her bio on IMDb: www.imdb.com/name/nm2397715/ www.imdb.com/name/nm2397715/bio?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm Good luck with everything; hope to see you on the big screen some day!

I live in England in the middle of nowhere. I live near enough to Manchester that if I was going to do acting classes, that’s where I’d have to go. The issue is that the acting scene is quite small, and I can’t find anything that looks legit. They all look super sketchy. I just wanna do acting classes

hey, I'm so grateful for your videos! I was wondering, How would you recommend finding agents and casting directors if you're new to an area? Like it would be easy to follow them and look them up if you knew what to look up yk

If you can't afford acting classes then you shouldn't be focusing on a career in acting - you should be focusing on going to a trade school; college or even the military in order to get trained in an occupation that's going to pay the bills; buy groceries and still have enough left over to pay for acting classes; headshots; casting sites etc. It also helps if you can find a career that's flexible enough with scheduling that you can take time off for auditions; rehearsals; performances; movie premieres etc. Kurt was a software engineer before he became an actor; so was my best friend. I did Information Technology work before I became an actor and the good thing about these two fields (or any engineering job) is that you can work contract jobs which means you'll work your regular job for anywhere from two to six months - you'll make enough money during the six month period to cover rent for the next few months... so you can then afford to take a few months off to just focus on acting. Then when the money starts to run out it's time to line up the next contract job. Also, it's not about "practicing at home" because you need to have a good teacher to guide you and mentor you. You can't do brain surgery on yourself and if you're not qualified to teach an acting class - why would you want to teach yourself? Learning about acting by reading and watching videos is like trying to learn how to ride a bike by reading about it. You can read every book in the world about bikes and even get a mechanical engineering degree but you're never going to learn balance until you get on and ride. Of course it IS a good idea to read as much as you can before you take an acting class; watch as many videos as you can - but don't think that reading and watching videos is going to be a good substitute for acting classes.

Hi! I have another question. Are you able to join drama class in high school or do you have to join a different acting class? Also, is drama class in high school always musical or are there plays and different acts?
@ActingCareerCenter
@ActingCareerCenter 4 жыл бұрын
I think all acting classes can be helpful whether it is a school class or something outside of school. Some high schools have musical classes and some don't. It really depends on the school.

Hey Kurt - I've researched a few different agent showcases. Can you tell us about your recommendations? Or maybe do a video on this. Like you said, there's a lot of scams and it would be helpful to have a little guidance on which ones are legitimate and what to expect to pay for these showcases. Thanks so much!
@ActingCareerCenter
@ActingCareerCenter 3 жыл бұрын
I've never personally attended a showcase so it's hard for me to say. In my opinion, the ones that charge thousands of dollars are a waste of money. I still maintain that the best way to get representation is through your acting classes. I've taken classes where they've done a performance night or scene night once per year and invite local agents to attend.

Hello Kurt! I just found your videos and I'm loving the helpful information you're providing! I have a question, tho... I'm based in Mexico, and some of the tips don't really work for me, since I cannot book a job to film a commercial or go to acting classes in hollywood or vancouver, so my question is, do you have any tips or advice to get an agent internationally?

You should start by trying to find agents and acting opportunities in your own country. It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to get an agent in the US without living here first
