I know your collection is a different genrė from mine, but as soon as the prices sky-rocketed and the figures produced (for my collection) were just variants of the same figures, I've just stopped buying. Since doing that I no longer have fomo, and I enjoy my collection for what it is.

Hey Fanboy! That’s honestly a healthy approach. I have tried to start collecting the modern figures, but have no passion for it, so that was easy for me to stop, but I can see the FOMO part of the addiction becoming real. Especially after watching your peers getting haul after haul. Thanks for the thoughtful comment and for watch my friend

@@thepadawancollectorofficial Hi. No problem, and thanks for the reply. I enjoy your episodes as I too collected the original figures many years ago, but as a custom in the UK, when we outgrew collecting, my parents (just like many in the mid-late 80's) gave our collections away...

FOMO is a particularly insidious thing. I try to think I was happy before this thing/figure existed, so if it exists and I don’t have it I shouldn’t feel unhappy or unfulfilled.

This topic should really hit home for all of us, in some way or another. Collecting and addiction certainly go hand in hand, more often than we would care to admit. I appreciated your honesty on the topic as well as your concise summations in regards to both. I've seen where my collecting has been more of an addiction, and had to reel myself back in as well. It ebbs and flows as my interest does, but thankfully for vintage Star Wars, I always come back around even after brief stints/breaks. Recognizing when you're collecting breaks the boundaries of your budget and your social life, especially your relationship with your closest loved ones is so vitally important. Having the willpower to restrain yourself and/or get yourself back in line can be very challenging. Throughout my many years of collecting I am pretty sure I've battled all of the demons that you've discussed in this video at one point or another. My most current one is overspending beyond my set budget, so to battle this I just completely shut myself off to all the avenues for purchasing or even browsing, as I know I'm always bound to find something that I "need" that will no doubt be outside my budget for the month. At least now I know the signs of the pending rabbit hole, so I am able to stifle that before it becomes an issue. I know it's a learning process for many, hopefully the lessons are learned before it becomes truly an issue in your lives. Great topic Joey, and one that definitely deserves more light and more honesty.

Going through this right now. I sought out therapy late last year because I noticed I was having major concentration problems. I was tested and diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 45 and started medication and continued with therapy. Quickly I noticed my desire to impulse buy began to subside. I started canceling preorders. I even sold off 16 boxes of packaged figures. Because ADHD is a dopamine deficiency, I was using collecting as a means to get that fix. This is a topic that needs to be discussed more in collector circles and I’m now shooting pictures as well as recording video of some of my progress as I’m reorganizing and “digging out”.

I have downsized so much and I don’t miss any of it, yet. Lols. Even the childhood stuff. Honestly, at this point I just have figures and a couple vintage vehicles that count to me. The downsizing was for money for the family when it was needed the most & for that I am thankful for the value they hold. These days I don’t buy much unless that figure looks real damn good. No preorders. I only buy in the wild now and I live in the Deep South with only targets and Walmarts to shop from. I do have a great buddy with a deep connection locally that I owe most of my best stuff for finding. I have 2 young boys and we don’t usually have the kinda of cash I would need to complete my vintage run. With that said, I’d sell it all if we needed it for something real any day.

Great video! It really puts things into perspective, especially your great description of the "why". I had a large vintage collection but I sold almost all of it off several years ago after the prequels came out. Recently I got back into skateboarding and how they can still give you the feeling of freedom they did back in the 80's. I couldn't help but notice your Cab & Hawk decks in the background on your wall and I am guessing the rest of the Bones Brigade are up there too. Thanks for the great content!

I would probably be addicted to collecting Star Wars stuff if it wasn't for the self-discipline that my family instilled in me even at an early age. My parents and grandparents (especially on my dad's side) were rather strict, stoic people who taught me to control how I reacted to life and to never let my emotions overwhelm my judgement. I also am something of a frugal person, partly due to their influence and partly due to my wife who was also raised to be frugal with money. We try to live well within our means, with a small apartment, one car, buying almost everything used if we can, etc. I'm a lucky guy, though, because I've met a lot of collectors over the years whose spouse didn't understand their passions and weren't supportive of their hobbies unlike my wife. Not only does she not give me a hard time about collecting, or joining clubs and going to conventions, but she sometimes gets me items she knows that I want, or tickets to events as well. Having very limited space really helps me resist the urge to impulse buy. I'll see something that I really want online, in a store or at an event, but then I'll think "Where would I put it?" Having a small apartment saves you money in many ways. Even though I don't buy, or trade for as much stuff as I'd like to, I've found that I get just as big of a kick out of talking with other collectors and watching their videos as I do from actually getting items myself. Just like with playing videogames, or tabletop games, discussing the hobby can be as much fun as engaging in whatever activity there is with it. Even selling an item to a fellow collector for less than he thought he'd have to pay for it can be a rush. When they thank me for it and I see in a post, private message, Ebay reply, etc. how much they love what I've sent them, that's a good feeling too. Your videos and replies to comments are an excellent example of how talking about collecting can be as much fun as collecting itself. Thanks for making these videos.

Hey John! Thanks for your excellent and reflective comment. It sounds like you have a great support system in life with you spouse, that’s so awesome! And it’s good to be frugal just as it’s good to spend money on things that bring you joy or fulfill an interest; it sounds like you have a great balance on that as well. Just as you said, there are a ton of people who don’t have that support system or the ability to control their finances and that’s a shame. Hopefully topics and conversations like this make people more self aware and take inventory on their habits. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, John. Take care my friend.

Great video. I feel this is a very important topic to cover in every collecting community, especially on a channel such as yours. I have studied this topic extensively and I feel you covered the cautionary side perfectly, even providing measures to counter the impulses when things get out of control. Personally, I would have also like to have seen you speak equally on the flip side; the positives. I read Shirley Mueller's book last year and found her viewpoint on how, when balanced, collecting can also offer a sense of community that may be lacking in many of our lives. I am doing her book no justice here, but I was also surprised at the number of positives she discovered when a balanced collecting hobby is practiced. Another book I would strongly recommend is an older book from 1995 titled, "Collecting: An Unruly Passion: Psychological Perspectives" by Werner Muensterberger. This one is a bit of a tougher read but also outlines the extreme negatives of this hobby throughout history, with a surprising twist at its conclusion of a positive, almost uplifting, viewpoint on collecting.

Hey Aaron! Yes that’s a good point and something that I touched lightly on in this one, but yes that message could have been more powerful and he positive aspects of the collection community and what YOUR collection brings you. Hi Joey, greetings from Australia. I have enjoyed watching your videos since discovering your channel a few weeks ago and must say it has been very nostalgic for me. I was seven when Star Wars came out and it was a very big part of my childhood for me and my friends. I collected all of the original figures as they came out except for the last eight, maybe I will try and finish my collection one day. I have a few of the playsets and ships ,however the centrepiece of my collection would have to be my vinyl caped jawa. Unfortunately he is not boxed but he is in mint condition. Thankfully I still have my entire collection from my childhood and have been adding to it as the new movies come out. Every now and again I go through my collection for a bit of nostalgia as like you my dear mother bought most of it for me. Love your work and look forward to your next video.

This is a very good topic to cover. I know that my collecting is not an addiction (although some people joke at me that it is) but overall everyone I know loves that I collect Star Wars (and other toys). I have friends come over and take pictures of my collections to share with others. My collecting of Star Wars is very controlled most of the time with my budget, but sometimes I have gone out of budget. My Mom had told me once that if you see it then you should get it or you might not see it again. It is first and foremost a nostalgia for me and reminds me of my childhood. Sometimes when I look at my collection (especially my vintage) I can smell my childhood. And second of all I have anxiety. My career is not very easy as a composer and conductor and music educator. Music is my number one passion and I adore my career, but I do need to step aside when too much work is at hand and let the anxiety go and give myself a few days and work with my collection. It really helps to return back to a musical composition that has been rough to compose, or practicing a piece for rehearsal or even worse grading papers. So after a few days of speeding time with collecting and finding pieces, I am totally relaxed and return back to work with a lot of energy. Of course then there is the facts that I will conduct John Williams’ famous score to Star Wars and then the collection returns to my head. By the way, Star Wars and my career are linked. When Star Wars first was released my Mother bought me the soundtrack (on vinyl which I still have with JW’s signature). This is how my Mother got me into music as she has planned. The music captured me and I wanted to be a composer like JW. And thus I became a composer. It’s all because of Star Wars. So basically my collection is very personal for me. It shaped my future and my life.

Wow thanks for sharing that Wolf! Your mother sounds like a very lovely woman and it’s a total blessing to have that in your life. I agree with you about finding a therapeutic measure in collecting. I use collecting in the same way you do: to clear my mind and focus on something else. We both work in the creative space and I find it a way to clear my mind to let creative ideas come to me. It may not make sense to other people, but I get your explanation perfectly. I hope to see your collection in pictures sometime. I've gotten into collecting figures feirly recently. I've had a lot of moments in my life where I'd pick up an interest, get really into it, then it would fade into never liking it again, and I've been worried collecting will have the same fate. I also went a bit wild with spending T-T. I'm planning to really give myself time to think if I want a figure, I'll wait a few weeks, then think about budgeting. This is a challenging hobby, not for the faint of heart nor wallet! This is bound to happen a few times, and it's good that your conscientious about this. Thanks McNoot, and that’s a fair summary of what we ALL go through as collectors. The main thing is to be conscious of problems that are either around us in the hobby, or even within us. And it sounds like you are like a Jedi and tuned in to how you feel at all times. That’s good and hope you can take it slow and only get the things that bring you joy and also sell or make room for the things that don’t. Well said my friend. Great video! Thank you! I can't like this video enough! I find behavior and addiction interesting to begin with, but there was an added element, my own reflection. I've seen the way I felt, and/or felt the way I THINK family sees me: as an addict. There've been times I've felt low, like I couldn't keep money in my pocket. I've made jokes about myself needing another figure for my fix, as has my SW dealer. That's right, I have a personal dealer. I'm addicted to plastic. :) Sometimes I feel like an addict, other times I feel like a reckless gambler, always chasing a high or a winning streak. I can feel WHY I'm on the hunt, but it vacillates between collector and addict/gambler. I collect for various reasons, I'm glad you mentioned preservation, because one of the reasons I collect is to keep something safe, whether I'm safeguarding a memory or a "relic", I find myself in a position where I'm exhausting my finances and my emotions, to a certain degree, regarding the items in question. These aren't just figures to me, these are cultural representations of "tribal" effigies for interaction and imagination. These hold a value far beyond monetary. I find when I'm trying to be "good", or "polite", in terms of impulse buys, that those were the ones I should've grabbed. Whereas the ones I have to justify buying are typically the ones I don't need. I need to let go of my most painful regrets, acting on an opportunity that wasn't for me, or not acting upon an opportunity that was perfectly mine. I love your budget list, I may have to implement this into my own approach. I've heard you mention your budget list and other videos and "that sounds like the plan for me". :) haha THANK YOU so much for doing this video! I found it interesting, informative, and helpful. :)

One of your best videos, Joey! This is a constant struggle for me. One of the things I do to address it is to measure the emotional cost in addition to the financial; sort of a dopamine/cash exchange rate. I also try to think about the future emotional potential; will I continue to enjoy owning an item, or will it be something I stress over how to display or maintain? Is the rush I get from the item sustainable? I’m in the midst of a collection overhaul and narrowing of focus, so that I can maximize my enjoyment of the collection and my quality of life in general.

What I'm trying to say is that the mechanisms on both are the same. If your hobby is starting to affect other areas of your life, it's probably time to take stock. If the thought you might be in trouble never even occurs to you, you are definitely already in trouble! Time for an intervention of some kind. 🤔

Well said Acro! I’m lucky I have a good support system around me but feel for those who do not. That’s why I wanted to make this video; a lot of the collectors I have talked to don’t have that healthy support system and it’s really US in the community who are their support. As always thanks for your comments and taking the time to watch

Hey Joey. Another great episode. Frequently, I have seen items up for auction either live or on websites that I desire, and I keep a budget in mind all the time and don't go over the initial maximum I would pay. If someone outbids me, good for them. I think many may get into bidding wars and have that focus on the win, not the piece they are actually bidding on.

Hey Daniel! In the beginning I got super addicted to bidding on eBay and I may have ended up with a figure or two that I wasn’t happy with lol. Those bids are addictive so I hear ya! Personally my huge collection of action figures is my life. Its basically all I live and breath. No I don't have a wife and children or grandchildren. I don't own a car or a house. I don't have friends or any form of social interaction with other people. I had a childhood of trauma and neglect. Sexual and psychological abuse that went on for decades. Its left me with formally diagnosed personality disorders. Social phobia and I'm emotionally unstable. I can not be around real people so I fill my 'world' with plastic action figures. Like any addiction weather its drink or drugs or sex or gambling or spending it all leads back to one thing - filling a void ! My excessive collecting is the overcompensating for a loveless and abusive life. If I stop my collecting I am dead in the water.. its all I have that keeps me alive.

Excellent topic. I used to buy what I liked. And that was bad. Now I set goals. Because there is always “one more” item that is a surprise must have. For me, 2 rules, everything must fit in the pre designated display space and when that is full or tight something must be sold on or given to a fellow collector. These rules have helped a lot. And some of those pieces I sell have increased in the years I enjoyed them. And that offsets any new costs incurred. Just my 2 cents. Important to not let it be compulsive like the Dr says.

I think a lot of people are addicted. Addiction is far too easy to get sucked down by. It is very hard to walk that fine line. If I don’t find it fun I pull back. That can takes weeks, months before in my past. Now, I can pull back and detach myself from it. I keep it casual and I have taken steps to sell a lot of stuff. Most of my Star Wars Black Series is going as I don’t feel an emotional connection too. Also I keep reminding myself, they are mass produced toys, they aren’t important.

Heya Joey! An another interesting presentation. I may have may have mentioned previously that I do not wholly understand the Contemporary Vintage Collector? If I had not kept my Collection, I doubt that as an adult that I would endeavour to re-build it? It is a case of needs verses want's. Deferred or Instant Gratification? Do I need my Collection? Yes as they have always been in my Life. Do I want to Collect all the Newer Figures post 1995, no as they for all their accuracy and intricacy do not have the same association of novelty, wonder and a Deep, Deep Love. A Child's Love. And Children can Love Passionately and there is no Love such as the fulfillment of acquiring a longed for toy. That attachment becomes encoded on such a subliminal profound level that it is almost impossible to equal or surpass! As a child Star Wars Figure Anxiety was very real and I felt physically ill if I had missed out on a long desired Figure or waiting for a Mail Away Special Offer, but with adulthood impulses are tempered by adult responsibilities, occupation and in these circumstances, a very Disposable Income. Some will argue that it is just reward for personal and financial attainment whilst others will simply say that it is no business of yours! Needs Vs Want's. Justifying the Needs to Legitimise the Want's. In life as adults we do not Need to do anything that we do not Want to do, but either by positive or negative action or inaction will have consequences regardless.

What a great episode Joey. One way to control my spending, is I delete my entire watch list on ebay. That way there's nothing to alert me to buy. Unfortunately, prices for star wars are starting to come down, and I feel that next year, prices will be even worse, due to the economy. So I feel there is an urgency to purchase when there's a sale on. Stay on target people...buy what you can afford, get a 2nd job if you must, but only buy what you can afford.

I only buy in person at flea markets, rummage sales and the occasional toy show. That's why I'm still missing 11 figures after 27 years of collecting. The physical hunt is more fun than eBay and costs a ton less. I can't get a quick fix like online collectors so I don't feel like it's much less of an addiction. Since I live in WI, I get a five month break from flea markets, which helps me appreciate what I have.

I have to collect. Something. As things change in a market or local recourses dry up, or when I went from well payed to disabled, I had to at times change what collection I worked on. But I NEVER sold any of my stuff. I hate the predatory nature of buying/selling. If I am looking, then everything is worth a small fortune, but as soon as I talk about selling, I get hit with every low ball offer out there. Buyers need to make money, I get that, but when I know the value and every one keeps hitting low, sorry. I give up. Buying high and selling low is no way to live. The few things I let go were to other collecters I knew had a true passion for it. Then the price was not a factor. Seeing someone truly happy to get it has no price.

Well we don't have to collect them all. I have refocused on only specific lines, avoiding others. This is to reduce clutter and save space. I don't bother with say SW Vintage collection specialty waves (repacks) or Black Series. No Vehicles or playsets and If I want a pack -in figure I just go on ebay or elsewhere to get it. Too much space eaten if |I don't

Chasing and acquiring a figure you that sweet sweet dopamine! I find that being transparent with my wife with what I am considering buying helps keep me staying in budget, for several reasons. In software development there is a process called “rubber ducky” where you talk through a problem to an inanimate object, such as a rubber duck. Talking out the potential large purchase can actually make me realize whether it’s an impulse or something that I actually want. Talking things out with the wife is also a way of checking my own emotional state. My thinking is this, If I ever hesitate to tell her I am looking for an expensive piece, then I know it may be a good idea to let the item go. That anxiety about mentioning I found a $1500 MOC is there for a reason. Finally, she is also aware of other things we want to do. I almost bought a 12 back until she mentioned that we should start getting estimates on a home improvement project we talked about a few months back. When the value of a figure is the same as flooring materials and baseboards for a living room it helps put things in perspective. I love traveling on vacations so, is a graded vinyl cape Jawa worth as much as a Disney Cruise to me personally? What am I willing to give up to get something? These are questions that I ask or the wife asks me … and that mental exercise helps tremendously. And yes, cruise time around New Orleans beats the plastic Jawa. So does a bathroom remodel.

I think if you are a completist your are more likely to become addicted. "Gotta chatch them all." that sounds likea compulsion. I'm a cherry picker. I don't have the money or space to buy all teh stuff I like. It's very good to have planned budget, but sometimes you gotta strike when the iron is hot you know. You're right about the jolt: Last year I unexpectedly came across a G.I.JOE Classified Firefly and I physically felt that. I could have also picked up Major Bludd, but since I never liked him I left him for some other collector or kid to find him.

It’s super hard to be self disciplined when there are so many great deals out there at once!!! But yea I agree with you, sometimes you gotta strike! I have learned to shift my budget when I do that and really make sure I either save up, or stop collecting until my budget corrects itself back to the planned path. That’s what I like about the vintage Star Wars line, it’s a finite number of items, even if you include all the playsets, vehicles and such. But it does get out of hand quick. As long as it’s fun and as long as I don’t rush, I have enjoyed it. Thanks for the awesome comment zombi, and for taking the time to watch
