I feel like this is a topic that needs to be discussed more especially when there's so many people out there with huge platforms which never discuss this and end up becoming "gateway drugs" to this very real addiction that ruins many lives. Too many people disappear from communities in shame and it breaks my heart when I see so many people have their lives/relationships ruined from something that's seemingly innocent.
This also I guess is a way for me to explain why I make the videos that I do and why I get feel so passionate about just bringing to light on how MOST people should NOT "invest" in collectibles and trading cards and realize that most "advice" they see online should just be seen as entertainment rather than actual financial advice.

This is a long one but I just needed to get it off my chest to explain why I get so passionate and heated up about the topic of "investments" in tcgs and I feel like I need to speak up when it comes to some of these things. Because I understand to some people even hundreds of dollars could mean the world to them.
Thank you everyone that watched and heard me out and that has been subscribing and liking the videos and letting me know what you think of it. I read all your comments and I really appreciate them. Take care and be safe!

I work at a card store and nearly every kid who comes in or opens packs is always talking about the value of the cards, I'm talking like 8-10 year olds. I'm sure you can guess what kind of Pokemon TCG content they watch on youtube.
@peanutbutterpandapuffs
@peanutbutterpandapuffs 2 жыл бұрын
That's actually some great insight since I don't work at a card store lol I just assumed thats how it is based on how people use children for content on youtube and show it all the time as well as how many views those videos get. I feel like as content creators with huge followings at some point they make so much money that they really should be more responsible since young people are so impressionable. I feel like its pretty much getting children into gambling if you look at it

Oh, this is sad to hear :( Not like we can control other human beings, but as a parent if my kid was talking like that I'd be shocked (unless as a parent, I was also stuck in the viscous gambling aspect of TCG, then I'd be agreeing with my kid LOL. Sad.).

This is 100% man! I have had a big problem with this. Collecting small amounts, then suddenly I most collect it ALL! Spent entire savings in very few months at times. Have ended up selling off and even throwing my entire collection worth a lot in the garbage TWICE! Buying, collecting, then the "shame" comes and the only way to get rid of the addiction for me is to get rid of everything as fast as possible. And now again im online looking for card deals, but I try to stay away from it this time even if it is very hard. This video is a most watch man! Thanks for making it!

Unfortunately yea, for a lot of people it is gambling disguised as shiny cardboard. And its so easy to get sucked in when you watch breaks or youtube opening videos of people "pulling" things with like ONE PACK MAGIC or some bs. When these content creators have sponsors and make money off of their content so they can afford to just buy a ton of products and pretty much sometimes only record and publish videos if they do a big pull, which is very misleading to people who watch and think they could do the same

If you know anybody that has addictive tendencies and have a friend in the hobby that might need help, make sure to reach out to them. Hope this helps someone out there. Take care! Also , Feel free to share your experiences here in the comments. Thank you for making this video. Everyone who is interested in trading card games should watch this, for their own sake and those around them. It must be a similar neurological experience to gambling. You take a chance for a cost, usually with low reward, occasionally with higher reward. Especially when it's good, it triggers a dopamine release, and you want more. And we were conditioned to this experience as kids. People who promote these as investments should face legal repercussions. There are regulations in the financial industry about conferring investment advice for reasons you mentioned.

The key is letting all the air out of triple sleeving first. It takes a bit of time for it to settle as you sorta squeeze the extra air out. As for the actual shuffling, I sort of do that side shuffling thing where I slide the cards in while its on the side. ( i forgot the name of what it is called ). Weiss decks are smaller than 60 cards though haha. I can imagine 60 is THICK.

This video was extremely informative and I wish I found it months ago. I blew $10,000+ on breaks/boxes/etc. all for the chase of hitting something big. Thankfully I had savings to cover everything I spent but now I am back to square 1 with $0 in savings. Terrible life lesson but I am glad I learned it early on in my life. Many things that are covered in shiny objects can be deceiving and addicting. Thankfully reality hit me a couple of months ago while looking at my bank account and I was able to quit. Now I just buy low $ PC items because I love the way they look (back to the way it was when I was a kid). Love that you mentioned the reason we bought Pokemon cards as a kid. I never thought about the $$$, just loved the way they looked and playing the game with my friends. Glad I am getting back to that mindset.

Youre a good person for pointing this out and your analysis is solid. I remember collecting in 2004 when I was 8. No one knew what the value of cards were, I was just excited to pull something glittery with amazing art of the characters that I felt connected to in the game. The pack opening process where the contents were unknown kind of mirrors the game where you run in the grass and don’t know what will come up. Id open maybe a pack or 2 a week and it was super exciting, id carry my favourites wherever I went and look at cards with other kids at school. Pokemon cards were not dangerous back then, sets could be completed for much cheaper as the pull rates were much more fair. I dont think there were as many ways to bankrupt yourself with trading cards. Still, I think the hobby can be enjoyed today with more self control and some perspective shifts on the value of cards.

Yea i really think the pandemic took a huge hit on everyone since it made a lot of people dive back into the nostalgic hobbies but armed with "adult incomes". And all the hype channels just drove a lot of people to be financially irresponsible whether by choice or unknowingly. I just saw it way too often where people were always just "chasing the money", which previously was probably solely in the sports cards territory but now its spilled into everything else , especially with things like graded cards. Thank you for the feedback and I really love seeing when people enjoy the videos !

I’m 40 and my kids got me into Pokémon. I’ve always known what it is, but just never got into it. But I have spent over $1,500 in cards, cash and credit. I need to stop before my wife finds out. We pick up a few packs here and there for our kids, but I’ve been sneaking out to buy them and open them…. So it is a bad habit. I’m just lucky we do earn a lot so I can hide it, but now, it just needs to stop. I mean. Sit around waiting for your ETB to go up by 500 bucks in 10 years is a bad investment as well. My brain tells me it’s a bad deal, but it’s so addictive. Anyway, quitting and focusing on other things and investing for my retirement.

But yea as for investments you could literally sit on any stock market stuff and still feel more comfortable than to sit on a ETB for 10 years hoping it’ll go up and then trying to figure out how to store and sell it . But thank you for sharing your story , I hope others with the same issues read this and realize it’s an actual problem that’s reals . Stay strong !

For now I’ve stopped buying lots of booster boxes chasing cards, and instead focus on buying single cards I want from TCG. It’s actually a better deal than trying your luck in a booster box. My wife is also buying me a charizard UPC for Xmas. I guess in the grand picture, its not too bad compared to what I’ve spent on my cars. But for now, still staying on track for investing my money smart.

Yea i think there is a lot of low risk hobbies/things to collect even in these "lottery/chance" type of collector items. I partially feel it might be due to economics that just makes a lot of people fall for these "get rich quick" type mentalities and parts of these hobbies attracts the desperate.

Thank you for making this content. I myself am coming to realize this hobby is eating up my finances even if I am just trying to complete sets, to play it smart I should be buying singles but I have to admit the thrill of opening sealed products is dangerous (actual gamble addition with CARDBOARD). Glad to have watched & count yourself a new subscriber :). Some thoughts I had during the video: 5:53 - Agree with you, if I see a kid in video about TCG I do not watch it simple as. And yes it's super messed up that the kids are learning that if it's not a huge hit then it's all garbage, me as a kid in the 90s every card I got in a pack was valuable to me & I cherished them. 9:38 - NOPE. Hate box breakers and I will never encourage it, opening packs is MY dopamine not yours. These people can kindly F**K OFF. 19:30 - No actual savings, paycheck-to-paycheck, this is all true, and also my reality... This kind of video does help awareness. Something you previously mentioned, the escapism is real. Missing timestamp - it is true there is an abundance of unsolicited """financial advising"""" online, be it through a popular youtuber upload or community threads (Facebook, reddit, 4chan, etc.) & it's all given out without much thought about who on the other end is going to consume it, the lower income people with unstable savings think they can do the same as the people giving out this """advice""" but it can be financially ruining. "Definitely buy this set & hold" or "Crack as many of these as possible WHILE YOU CAN" at the end of the day, you should have your own standards in this hobby or you will drown.

I'm glad it helped in a way ! But yea honestly I think I've always loved TCGs even way back when it was Magic the Gather or early Yugioh and Pokemon when it released and it always scratched this collectors type itch that I've had. But I think with the addition of social media, so many people are just sucked into the "invest in cardboard" mentality and its easy to fall into when everyone is just parroting one another on social media like reddit or fb with things like "BUY THE DIP THIS IS GOING TO THE MOOOON". Where honestly I think a video like this aged pretty well since looking back on it I still feel a lot of people are losing money on pokemon and trying to find a way out. I personally find it irresponsible to tell people to "hold the line or buy the dip" when most people have NO IDEA what financial situation some people may be in, and rather than exiting, theyll just go deeper into debt instead :/

Nailed it! We did think similar in the 90s with value some what. We always waited every month for the new Beckett magazine to come out to see the card prices. But we more collected for the love of the hobby and the sports we watched. Packs were 50 cent to a dollar and maybe we blew our allowance on it but we weren't going into debt. Guys now a days are opening $1000 hobby boxes and entering multiple $100-$200 breaks a night. The whole flipping game is crazy now its got every kid trying to be a reseller. Some of them thrive off of it and become great business savy citizens in the future but I question some of the dark paths other kids might get led down.

I definitely know I knew about the value of the cards to some extent as a kid. I still have several issues of the Beckett price guides that I had when I was a kid. Although mostly I think I only really knew about/cared about the price of the Charizard because that's what everyone talked about. That being said I also had pockets in my binder stuffed with multiples of commons and uncommons because I saw them as being valuable enough to be worth keeping. I definitely didn't look at them as "worthless bulk"
@peanutbutterpandapuffs
@peanutbutterpandapuffs Жыл бұрын
Yea I think most people somewhat fall into the category of "You KNOW charizard is worth alot" but back then people like us still put all the commons into our binders because we just purely loved the cards in one way or another. Which is also kind of ironic since nowadays some of those regular non holo rares and uncommons could sell for like 10-30 dollars at NM condition as well ( ive sold some myself ). Whereas I think the kids now opening a lot of these packs just copy these streamers and just toss anything thats not "expensive" purely based on price-wise. I think it also has something to do with theres more access to finding prices online now, as opposed to back then the only way to know is probably to buy those price magazines, which I did have as well for magic the gathering lol

Financial literacy is a big problem in this country. A lot of people never learn basic things about money management, credit & loans, budgeting, saving for a rainy day, etc. You see it with people who rack up credit card debt, can't pay much more than the monthly minimum, and are trapped accruing debt from huge interest rates. You also see it with people who get very wealthy in a short time period, like actual life-changing sums of money (think celebrities, athletes, even lottery winners), but they manage to blow it all and have to go through bankrupty. I think most people who do learn how to be responsible with money have picked it up from parents who had a handle on it. But with more households becoming financially unstable, that number will probably decline. If we required even just 1 semester's worth of basic finance in public school, it would have far more benefit to a lot more people than some of the nonsense being taught in schools today.

I'm also in that loop of value but I feel I've been through it so much I've learnt how to stop. I very rarely open pokemon packs now because I feel the money I earn goes to waste when I get nothing I want when I'd say 2 years ago all money I got was instantly spent on pokemon cards . Whereas I can buy singles and get tons of cool cards I want if it's rare or not. Or I'll buy boxes with promos I like so I know I'll get something I want. A few days ago I bought the new electric, water, grass tin, my one had 3 rares so about 1 buck worth and my friend got a rainbow rare and an alt art card worth at least 100 bucks. Can't deny I feel shit I was so close to getting cards I've wanted for ages. But my point there is their worth is something I refuse to buy for their price which is where I can tell myself I can get better stuff in my life for that price. Only reason I bought them was for the tin to be honest and the packs where a bonus or thats the way I force myself to see it This is why I play other card games like vanguard, value isn't really what I look for but I look for strong cards that can help me win but even still I feel bad when I don't get anything I want. maybe this comment didn't fully align with your videos points but I think it's true people need to address this, I'm lucky I can stop myself from going too far but I know people who can't
@peanutbutterpandapuffs
@peanutbutterpandapuffs 2 жыл бұрын
This does fully align with the points. Everyones experience with it is slightly different in how we cope with it but at the end of the day I think it's all about the "Chase" that people get stuck in. We get sucked in by focusing on how everyone ELSE gets the "rare cards". I think for some people to get off the addiction, buying singles is the way to stop the pack gambling ( although buying singles get pricey too ). I think another good way for other people who read this to kinda slow down on the spending is to just look at your collections and parts of it you feel bad or regret about and think about the money you spend to "chase" some of these cards and then it will kind of put it into perspective and help control the spending or stop you from continuing down that loop that seems neverending. I hope you continue to stay strong and keep it up! Thank you so much for sharing your personal experience, I'm sure to whoever else reads this it will help them as well too, to see that they are not alone in this out there.

I consider myself very lucky. I just got back into pokemon cards last week. I'd been out of the loop for 20+ years and have had 0 cards since some 1999 ones I used to have. It seems the crazy wave of popularity from a year or so ago is dying down so tons of cards are cheap now. I generally enjoy a lot of the common and uncommon card art now that I've looked through the billion sets that have released. Ebay has so many great deals for buying hundreds of these in bulk for as low as $5 so I get an immediate boost in a collection. Since I have no clue what set they are from and what all these new pokemon cards are I am enjoying inspecting every card one by one. I also got a few elite trainer boxes and have opened one already and don't care about what value each card is honestly. I have no plans to make these cards any form of investment and to be honest most of those ultra rares from these sets I don't like the art much anyways (not into the 3d ones for the most part). My first goal is to get a binder of the original 151 pokemon (don't care which set I can get them from, whichever has the best art). Many of these cards sell for pennies. I have the money if I wanted to buy tons of booster boxes and crap but don't see the point when there are more economic avenues to buy single or in bulk never used cards. For me until new sets come out I may buy a box or two if I REALLY like over 50% of the art for the cards but in most cases will just buy used ebay bulk after everyone moves to the next newest set and everyone that opened a gazillion boxes want to get rid of their 'trash' commons and uncommons.

It is such a great time to go into the hobby at the moment, things are so cheap now and picking up singles has been such a joy for me

I collect cards too, but Tarot cards. I love the unique artwork in each deck so I collect. I'm not a tarot reader, or whatever. You get 78 different pictures in each deck, and the artwork can be breathtaking. Don't get into tarot card collecting, it can be quite addictive.

Yea, I think it is actually crazy how many collecting categories there are out there and its so easy to get sucked into it for people who have never been a collector or anything before

Interesting! Never met a tarot card collector. I can see it being very addictive indeed due to that gorgeous artwork. Do you keep yours in specialized boxes? I don't see that they make binders for them off of a quick google search.

@@dizzyloops 78 cards fill up binders pretty quick if you have dozens or hundreds of decks. Most collectors keep them in their original boxes or wrap them in velvet or cloth pouches. Check out some decks and purchase a couple if you really appreciate art. (they are pretty cheap) There is nothing 'evil' or 'occult' in collecting tarot cards. I am not a reader of tarot and only collect them for their art appeal. They are really beautiful cards and are quite inexpensive compared to sports cards. A multitude of decks exist. Check some out and let me know if you bought any! You won't be disappointed! I also have a brand new youtube channel where I am showing beautiful decks.

I been collecting Pokémon cards toys plushies figures etc since 1998..I don’t collect for the money..I collect for the love of Pokémon but I don’t buy stuff every month..I’m disabled and can’t afford it…I buy what I like not what’s most valuable and shit..I hate these poketubers like Leon heart and all the others who are in the hobby just for the money and clout..I’d love to post vids here but I know I’ll be ignored compared to all of those guys

If you like posting videos and it’s what you want to do then do it ! As long as you enjoy it . I don’t think you should try to compare yourself to other people as long as you’re having fun !

It's funny to me the only ones who are "addicted" are the ones who spend thousands of dollars.

hm yea unfortunately its almost like a gambling addiction and it kinda snowballs for most people. The people that have self control normally wouldnt dump hundreds and thousands of their money gambling on opening booster boxes. I guess you cant really be addicted if you dont spend ridiculious amounts of money on this hobby xD

Re: fixation on card value, there are a lot of things that feed into it. You hit on social media, that's a big one for sure. Every store wants to have a flashy, cool, expensive thing in their display case, like a PSA 10 PeanutButterAndJellyZard with a 10k price tag. It attracts attention, people want to look at it, and inevitably some people will buy packs hoping to crack something like it. But kids see those cards, too, and it's easy to associate shiny card == expensive. And it gets reinforced by hearing other people talk about it in the store or online. Another problem that happens in some TCGs is when one of the chase cards is also a format staple, and building a competitive deck more or less requires you to play that card. There are some obvious offenders, and it's one of the reasons I like the fact that Weiss Schwarz has base-rarity so players can play with those and other people can chase the high-rarity parallels. (Although, as I say that, Houshou Marine is now 30 bucks on TCGPlayer... >_
