I've restored hand planes by using a similar method. De-rust in Evaporust, rinse in water, dry off with a heat gun and bring the temperature up to "too hot to the touch" with just the heat gun, then spray with WD-40 Rust Protectant spray. These planes are kept and used in a garage environment (South Florida) open to the elements and after 5 years, no rust (yet). And, they retain their bare steel look.

Hey I recently learned that some toilet bowl cleaners have hcl in them. I always assumed they were detergents. If you ever have something large that needs rust removal and you can’t submerge it, just use that. It’s thick and made to stick to the sides of stuff with 10% hcl.

I thought that was one that wasn’t destined for work again, but you proved me wrong. Excellent work regardless of how much the tool is worth. Being the owner of a lathe, yes that would have been easier to make steel pins/rivets, but the old bolt and nut works just as well and looks better than I expected. Surprisingly I loved the blued finish you made with the torch. I haven’t ever seen that before. Just a question, wouldn’t it have been easier to make a heated blue finish on the jaws seeing you have a torch? Understandably it would disrupt the temper, but tempering it in an oven afterwards will sort that. Just a thought. I don’t have a torch and therefore cold blue everything which is fine as long as it is kept oiled afterwards. But I digress; excellent work and I am glad I am already a subscriber.
