As a former Greyhound driver of 14.5 years, and 1.2 in local transit...driving a year or two in Hawaii is on my bucket list.

Fare payment system was recently updated. Try the 60 if you get a chance. Nice long ride along the ocean on the north shore. Was part of the circle Island before they did away with it. Now you have to take a couple busses to circle but the 60 was and is the most beautiful with small stops along the ocean with just a sign and sometime a bench.

I’ve seen the 60 bus around the island and it looks like a very scenic route!

I made extensive use of the bus when I went to Hawaii on vacation, also a new yorker here. It worked, I was fine with it. It got us everywhere we wanted to go. I don't recall waiting super long each time. I wasn't expecting it to be as common service as a new york bus, so my expectations were not dashed. But it was way more than I was expecting for not being in a big city. I pretty much expect everywhere that's not a giant city to have awful transit and Hawaii's was reasonable.

19:56 they just recently installed that blue outer wall outside the state capitol building, inside of it is actually a very nice water feature that would occasionally get vandalized. It looked so much better without that wall.

Google Maps does a pretty good job of tracking The Bus so you'll know if your bus is on time or running early or late. It can also track your progress so you don't miss your stop. Bumpy rides are a given since potholes are common.

Here in Seattle, we used to have that "Touch here to open the doors" system. It was discontinued for being too confusing. The secret of the system is that it's not really that touching the doors that opens them. There's an electric beam above the door that opens them. All you really need to open the doors is a slight touch of your fingertip.

People here in Honolulu (especially the older crew) enjoy putting both hands on the windows and just pumping the ever loving chriminy out of the dual swing doors with zero success. Then they start to scream and yell while pushing and pumping with all their might like the doors need CPR. It can be frustrating even to just watch.

Hi i ride the bus every time I go to honolulu, the card costs $5.00 you could use it all day, so i take advantage of it, go have breakfast, then to the pineapple dole, come back, then to walmart, go get pizzas, go to the beach, its a one day pass, get them at the ABC store. The first time we visited honolulu I paid $80. To get to the hotel, not no more.

TRUTH....that Hawaii doesn't have a public school bus system. But that's because it's All privatized! Another reason is that majority of public/private & universities are ALL w/in walking distance of nearest bus stops. UH-Manoa has one bus route that travels on the outskirts of Manoa campus & one that bisects E/W...same campus. HPU is right in the middle of downtown HNL/Chinatown

Thanks for the bus ride. I find it strange Hawaii doesn't have a school bus system. I can understand middle school & high school kids riding public buses, but what about the younger kids? I guess the parents have to take them to school either by: car or taking the bus with them. Or maybe the schools are in walking distance for the elementary kids.
@ActionKid

We actually do have them for the younger kids too. But, I think it's offered through the schools and it's only offered if your work schedule absolutely cannot allow you to bring your child to school and back home. I'm not 100% sure how they work out the routes because I've never had to utilize them myself as a parent. But, we definitely do have them for elementary students 😊🤙🏼

@sswan9689, perhaps the parents here in Hawaii feel that kids can walk or take public transit to school (many people feel that school buses aren't really great for kids anyway, and that kids should walk to school more and take public transit more, as Japanese kids do.)

3:37-These awards mean nothing to anybody who's lived in, worked in or visited Europe and Scandinavia (or Japan) and who find that North American transit sucks compared to the three other places.I mentioned; to them, most North American (U.S. based in particular) transit systems need to improve to the level of what's in Europe, Scandinavia, or Japan before they can claim that they're 'the best' (and said people would also include Toronto.)
